I heard about Ford cutting thousands of jobs and shutting down a bunch of plants. Is this going to have any affect on Mazda?

At the least, Mazda is going to have to cut costs and be under more pressure to make a big profit.

They already are. Mazda has been having GREAT success WORLDWIDE with the Mazda3 and the Mazda6 has been doing well too. Mazda just needs to keep doing what it has been.
Ford has much work to do in North America (a RWD sports sedan would be a good idea... like the Falcon from Australia) and dumping lackluster nameplates like Aston Martin and either Jaguar or Volvo are also good steps (why the hell do they need both in addition to Lincoln )
