View Full Version : sold the 8...
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 05:37 PM I'm already missing the car very much but it was the wrong car for me at this time of my life.
Now I've got to find myself a car. I'm looking for a sporty and reliable car that get's good gas mileage, AND has a manual transmission. My budget is under 17k and I'm hoping to get one for under 15k, so the car has to be used. Thinking of these cars:
Subaru Impreza WRX
Honda Prelude
Acura RSX
Nissan 240SX
Mazdaspeed Protege
Can you guys think of any others I should look into?
otherside 09-11-2006, 05:41 PM How about the luxo sport tourer deluxe, i.e. the Lexus IS350? I know deep down you really want one.
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 05:42 PM deep deep down....maybe. but its deep
icyur2 09-11-2006, 05:43 PM How about the basic 2006 Mazda 6i? After the $2500 rebate, you are looking @$15.8K...brand NEW :)
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 05:45 PM I like the 6, but I'm not to keen on the 4-cylinder version, except for the Mazdaspeed6 of course (way out of budget though)!
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 05:47 PM I added the Mazdaspeed Protege. There are a few of those in my area for sale but I'm not liking that huge spoiler on the the thing.
icyur2 09-11-2006, 05:49 PM Yeah..was wondering if you would bite on the 4-cylinder..but the MS version is almost as much as the 8!! If you don't need a car right now, you can get the 6-cylinder version a couple month down the road..$19.5K with NO options..
sunilseru 09-11-2006, 05:57 PM Acura RSX. Reliable and holds its value.
Jedi54 09-11-2006, 06:10 PM Prelude looks like a good option for what you want.
240SX is a very good car. Not the fastest car on your list, but a joy to drive. And it's RWD. ;)
If you don't need tons of space you could also consider a used Miata. Also wonderful to drive and you can also get a hardtop if you're not really into convertibles.

240sx is very good. I used to have one. but it is hard to find a good used one these days...
DaveCM203 09-11-2006, 06:26 PM From the list I would go with the 240. There are a ton of mods available for it, it is a blast to drive.
If you are secure in your manhood how about Miata? Occasionaly I see an S2000 for around 17-18k for one of the earlier ones. (If you are capible of becoming a Honda guy.) If you spot one, jump fast. It won't last long.
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 06:37 PM I don't think a miata or a s2000 is reasonable for my needs right now.
I looked at some 240's on Autotrader in my area. The thing is is that they all have alot of mileage on them. I have a '99 Altima that I'm driving right which has 125k miles and its dreadfully slow. I think the engine is in its last throes. I'm afraid of the same thing from buying a 240 with alot of mileage on it.
There are a few pretty good preludes around, and there are a lot of RSXs but I kinda want the Type-S model only.
sstricker 09-11-2006, 06:50 PM what about a nissan sentra SE-R?? good mileage, quick, and can pick up a good used one for around $10K??
mlane302 09-11-2006, 07:15 PM I sold my 8 for an audi TT. Over 30 mpg and can be tuned to a very powerful car for cheap. Looks a little better than a sentra too. Used ones can be had for as low as 13k.
subachad 09-11-2006, 07:31 PM Definately on the list I would go for the MS Protege. I have one and it's a great car. Keep the mods simple with a new midpipe and the car will be quick and handle better than most anything on the road. I think they go for about 13k now? I had a fully modified subaru and the MSP was almost as fast, all while being under warranty and getting MUCH better MPG... then again, MPG has never been a major concern.
Off the list, maybe a Scion TC? You can get a new one for 17k and since it's Toyota the resale should be good, also you get new car reliability.
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 07:45 PM ^^^Yeah they go for about 13k. But they look a little too....boy racerish I guess. I'll have to check one out in person though.
lucifuge 09-11-2006, 07:46 PM I sold my 8 for an Acura RSX. This car is seriously understated. I am having so much fun. Last 6 years, I've had a WRX, RX8 and now RSX. This is as much fun as the the others full stop. For front wheel drive, it handles extremely well. Awesome on fuel, enough power, looks are personal taste but I love it, sounds brilliant. It's a hell of a lot of fun. You wont be disappointed. Also, shitload of mods if you want to go down that path.
There's nothing like cruising at less than 5800rpm if you want use minimal fuel. Push it beyond and hit the VTEC and hang on, its like a mini turbo! With cutout at 8,300 rpm, it's not only rotaries which rev high.

Now do you have the Type-S model? The Type-S is one I'm interested in since it has the 200hp engine.
tiggerlee 09-11-2006, 08:46 PM So how much did you get for the 8?
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 08:53 PM PM'd tigger.

Now, I say again

dillsrotary 09-11-2006, 09:54 PM how many months did you have the 8?? what mileage did you sell it with?? how much did you sell it for??
BlueSky 09-11-2006, 10:01 PM PM sent dills.
sunilseru 09-11-2006, 11:32 PM Now do you have the Type-S model? The Type-S is one I'm interested in since it has the 200hp engine.
I owned an RSX Type-S for 33 months before I got the 8. It is an awesome car. Yes it is FWD, but it handles very well for that setup. VTEC is a thing of beauty. And guess what, when I sold it, the depreciation on my car was about $170/month. You will not go wrong with that car. Just make sure you test drive the car properly and make sure all the gears are fine. There are a few out there that grind when you shift from 1 - 2. Good luck!
shakRpahX8 09-11-2006, 11:35 PM wow

GPW 06/07 S2000 :) hopefully...
The 240sx is a very nice car. It handled well, didn't ask me much and saw me through grad school (I was broke back then). I won't say it was completely problem free. It had some 137K miles when I got it. I was the 4th owner. Don't think it was well maintained, it was completely beat-up. The starter failed ($100 fix), A/C compressor started leaking (couldn't get that fixed, no $$$). The motor and tranny always ran smooth. Nothing major. Decent mileage. If you can find one in good condition, go for it. If not, there are quite a few used RSX Type-S in our area. You won't go wrong either way!

1stgen8 09-12-2006, 02:38 AM Having owned about 10 Hondas before my 8 I would go with the RSX-S. My last Honda was an 02 Civic Si with s/c. Pulled that then added a slightly built 04 CRV swap. You can pick up a used RSX for about $14 and use the remaining $3 for a jackson racing supercharger or greddy turbo. Mods are endless for those cars. I love the ride of the 8 but miss the torque of my civic.

bascho 09-12-2006, 11:18 AM Bluesky, congrats on selling your car......hopefully you did ok on the sale. Your replacement list looks like it could use a few more options. I noticed you had the Imprezza on the list....how about the Legacy GT? Are you completely against Euro's or Domestics?
BlueSky 09-12-2006, 02:38 PM I'm not against Euro's or Domestics, my only limitations are my budget which is $17k. A Legacy GT would be nice, but I'd have to have around $21k for a decent one. I did do ok on the sell, I'll send you a PM about it, but I want to have some money left in the bank and not use all of it.
BlueEyes 09-12-2006, 02:46 PM Where is orange county? california or new york?
BlueSky 09-12-2006, 02:47 PM ^^^California. I looked for the Type-R's and only found three. All were above $17k within 25miles of my zipcode. It seems that they depreciate like Supras.
