I seem to be holding an almost real time conversation via the forum with more than 1 person at once...

How about we all meet on IRC some time??

I suggest EFNET, on #RX8

I think this would be a great idea for us all to communicate more easily with each other.

Blueadept, can you post some details (or PM) as to how to get it set up?

Cheers

Anyone else on mIRC ? That's the only one I have experience of and it's very easy to setup.

Titanium Grey

Yep!

MIRc, free and easy.

BlueAdept

If you are unsure, use an IRC client such as mIRC which is readily available from most download sites or "http://www.mirc.org/".

Connect to the an EFNET server, such as "efnet.demon.co.uk", and join the channel #rx8.

See you there... although I may not be around the keyboard ALL the time.

It's *very* quiet n #rx8 at the moment!:p

Well... I'm in there for the rest of the day... and Titanium Grey is around at the moment too... now would be a good time... but I guess arranging a schedule would be good for the future..

Titanium Grey

Come on everyone! where are you all?

sixspeed
09-01-2003, 10:28 AM
Don't think it works through the firewall here. Might pop on later, but I'm betting you're all only using it in the day.

Maybe we should schedule a time to "meet" in the chatroom?

Go to mIRC (http://www.mirc.org/) and download the free software. Then set up a new connection with the irc server as efnet.demon.co.uk and then when you connect type in #RX8

me and a couple of others are in there now.

As one of the few (not in IT) forum members, could someone advise me in "plain speak" how to join this band of computer geeks or could I be making a serious mistake?

Cheers

I'm there now - don't think anyone else is! :(

Oilman, you need to download mIRC from that link above. Install it, run, then input a username, and go to the server list to connect to an "EFnet" server.

Once connected, it'll ask you which room to join - type in #rx8 and click join/enter.

Should do it :)

Ok oilman.

goto www.mirc.org and download new 6.1 of the software (click on the mirc logo in the middle of the screen). You may be able to click on this link to do it directly :
http://www.mirc.org/download/mirc61.exe (its 1.2mb in size)
Ok when downloaded, run the executable on ehatever directory you've saved it to on your hard drive. Select all of the defaults - dont worry abut closing "all other programs" when it asks you. Then it will copy the files into the default directory (with a nice progress bar that increases in percentage and size as it installs - only takes a few seconds).
Then when installed, a set of icons will appear (click on start/programs/mIRC/mIRC).
It will tell you that you have 30 days left. Click continue
You then get asked for your full name, email address, nickname and alternate nickname. Type these in (for nickname type oilman and in alternate type OilmanSi or something like that) then click on the servers categogry on the left. Under IRC network leve it as "all" thenIRC server, change that to be "EFNET, EU, UK, London" then click "ok". The screen will then go blank (the white part of the screen). Then after a few seconds, another grey pop up window will appear with lots of names of chat "rooms", all starting with a hash (#). type #rx8 in the box and press return. Hopefully you will connect and we will all be in there. If not, then disconnect and try again from the connect bit later on..... repeat until someone is there and then make an arse of yourself!

Spoke to JonH and EdOwen last night but had to 'leave' about 10ish, as getting in in the neck from the Mrs for being a 'computer saddo' :D

Maybe we should arrange a 'virtual' meet for a certain day and time once everyone has the technology to do so?

BlueAdept
09-02-2003, 01:56 AM
Wow, a computer saddo AND a car saddo all at the same time... well I'm sure we've been drive to it by all these delays... ;-) Tell her to complain to Mazda... ROFLOL.

Without wishing to come across aggressive, is this forum and interchange not enough without starting another (be it) faster forum?

As a non-IT old fart perhaps I am missing the advantages.

rael

Titanium Grey

Because it's interactive, it becomes a lot more like a chat down the pub. Things tend to go off at a tangent, but it's also great not having to wait for a reply.

So it's a different experience, not as focused as the forum but more open to finding out more about your sad fellow RX-8 ownwers-to-be.:)

sixspeed
09-02-2003, 03:12 AM
Shall we make a date for another time then - maybe give us a few days to arrange a few hours leave from the other halves? :D

As Titanium Grey say's it's much more of a dialog and you also get a much better feel for the personality of the others (anyone on last night now knows Renegade_si is someone who shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard after 3/4 of a bottle of wine!;) :p

I can't connect through the work proxy so evenings after 10:30 are best for me.

It was good to chat to the guys on last night - shame I had to go so soon - the joy's of being a parent!

I appreciate that it may be a pain to install software to use this... and I certainly don't advocate it as an "alternative" forum... More as another poster pointed out as the digital equivalent of a "chat down the pub"... I decided to do this after getting about 10 P/M's in a 30 minute period, and waiting literally for the next response... this is a much more instant media.

I will endevour to find a web based JAVA IRC client and install it somwhere... hopefully that will make it a little easier for the uninitiated.

Chaps,

For those with firewalls and broadband routers, IRC is a pain to configure.

Anybody fancy using Yahoo messenger instead? Again its free and its V Good.

I meant to ask a similar question about MSN...

Anyone else on MSN Messenger?

If so - add me! andycohen@hotmail.com

BlueAdept

Yes, I'm on MSN (Until 15'th of October) when Microsoft is likley to lock a load of people including me out.

I'm moving to Jabber, along with a lot of other people I know.... take a look at the Exodus client.

http://exodus.jabberstudio.org/

There's lots of info and other clients at:-

http://www.jabber.org/

All that said, I'm also on AIM, ICQ and Yahoo... What can I say, I use GAIM which can do ALL the protocols.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

But beware, the Windows version is reported to be a little flaky.

Edit: See my profile for my account details on various protocols.

I agree that with a firewall you might have problems, although the same applies potentially to any protocol.... Not sure why you could have problems with a "broadband router" though.

I picked IRC specifically becasue it IS available to everyone, or should be at least at home... Not sure if you can create a "Chat" on Yahoo, but it's certainly not supported in any of the clients I have... they don't make an official client for ANY of the computers I use either at work or at home!

What protocol are we going to pick? Stick with IRC or Jabber.

What about another poll to amuse us. :D

Why are Microsoft likely to remove a load of people from MSN on the 15th Oct?

I think we should stick with IRC for our scheduled chats - the MSN Messenger bit I was just interested in as people tend to use this anyway for general online contacts, so wondered if anyone else had it. It's more useful for one-to-one conversations than group meetings/conferences etc.

-andy-

BlueAdept
09-03-2003, 01:31 PM
Well, they stated that as of that time, non Microsoft "3rd Party" clients would be blocked... as would those people using earlier MS clients.

Since I, and a lot of my contacts are not in a position to use "Microsoft Messenger".... partly because I have contacts on 5 different IM networks, but mainly because MS do not make a client for non MS operating systems such as Linux"

So, I've migrated everyone I can to Jabber and I guess I'll loose the rest.

Looks like I'm becoming a serial poster in this thread but here goes.

From 9:00 onwards tonight I will be hosting an IRC get together in the #rx8 forum on EFnet. All welcome. Oilman, and Rich606 have said they would be around as I hope will many others.

Come on in, an ideal opportunity to start some unfounded rumors and have a laugh!;)

Find out how to get on earlier in this thread, otherwise PM me for help and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers, Carl.

Is there a standard date/time for an IRC meeting?

Titanium Grey
09-14-2003, 03:36 PM
Every night any time after 10pm, you will usually find some one around.

Don't just login and out though, log in to the irc channel, then go and browse the forum, this gives others time to see that you want to chat.

I'll be in from around now till late this evening.

Cheers.
