View Full Version : The Smoking Poll...
Rudenauer 08-26-2003, 10:14 PM OK...fellow RX8 owners, enough about horsepower, it's time to get down to some serious issues, ie: Who plans on smoking in their beautiful new RX8! Please pick the one that most applies to you:
1. Cigars, cigarettes, pipes...Absolutely!
2. I'll allow my spouse or father in law if they must.
3. My buddies all smoke, so I guess I'll let them.
4. Not no, but HELL NO!
Please RX8 owner respondents only. BE HONEST!!
Aratinga 08-26-2003, 10:24 PM Eeeeewwww.... the reek of stale tobacco (or other herbs') smoke permeating a car's upholstery ranks right up there with cat piss and skunk on the "smells that make me gag" scale.
Don't even THINK about lighting up when you're riding in my car. No eating, drinking, farting, or nose-pickin', either. :D
Superfan 08-26-2003, 10:44 PM I smoke cigarettes but I'll never light one in the car. I don't even smoke inside my house. I think I only smoke so I can use it as an excuse to take breaks at work lol.
lefuton 08-27-2003, 12:04 AM im a smoker...and so far i've smoked once in the car, yeah that's not going to happen again. ash all over the b-pillar, it's impossible to get ash out the window above 25mph so... i guess it's a no.
B-Nez 08-27-2003, 02:07 AM I smoked from the time I was 14 until I was 15, then I've smoked since I was 19 up until now. 1 pack +/day smoker. Not only will I (or anyone else) NEVER smoke in my RX-8, I quit smoking 3 weeks ago. Granted, diverting funds toward the car payment was ALSO a factor...gotta have yer priorities straight. ;)
XDEEDUBBX 08-27-2003, 02:31 AM screw smoking in the 8..i had a 94 B13 and i used to smoke in it all the time...the interior lining of my roof was made of cloth..after a few years it the light grey started to turn dark grey..doh!!
Genom 08-27-2003, 03:03 PM I'm a smoker and most of my buddies are too, but when asked on the first day if soemone could smoke in the car, I replied with a very mild "Only if your final will and testament is made out to me to pay for the cleaning".
I dont care if someone smokes in the old Neon or in my house. The 8 is a whole other story.
the 8 is a horrible car to smoke it...the stick shakes too much for you to rest your hand with a cigarette on it...the sunroof let's in too much air as well...after about 3 cigarettes in the past 3 weeks i now have white ash all over the backseats and i'm a pro at ashing from a car...there's just too much wind inside the 8, even with the A/C off...
zoom44 08-27-2003, 03:19 PM i had not smoked in mine until late last week. have done it now about 4 times and there is just no way to get the ash to go out the window and stay out. it just comes right back in even if the cig is completly out of the window. hell, yesterday i was standing outside of the car about 10 feet away and the ashes were gettting sucked in. it's all over the back seats and thanks for reminding me 'cause i have to vacuum them before my wife sees them on saturday:o
ZoomZoom 08-27-2003, 04:09 PM I can understand not allowing anyone to smoke in you car if you are a non-smoker. That being said, I do not understand people who smoke that do not smoke in their own cars, especially if they keep their cars for several years like I do.
Who are you saving your cars for, the next buyer?
Now that's crazy!!!
I typically keep my cars for 10 years, I am not worried about resale - smoke away boy and girls (with your windows open). ;)
ENJOY YOUR CARS!!!!!
Genom 08-27-2003, 04:19 PM Well, in my case it's because my fiance doesnt smoke and when I get married next year I am quitting. So I limit myself a bit where I smoke and little by little get down to stopping.
This way I dont have a stinky car for the next 9 years :D
OverLOAD 08-27-2003, 07:32 PM After trying to come to some sort of conclusion with my first car, a '96 Canadian MX-3 V6, I decided that it was much more fun to actually pay attention to the car, rather then the smoke. I'd let other people smoke in the car occasionally, but hated it profusely, since it did add that musty smoke reek.
Now my newly retired "winter beater" 93 Tbird has never been smoked in by myself, but by the former owner. I've had it for about 2 years, and I'll be damned, but I can still smell smoke sometimes when I get in it. I don't notice it as much as other people though. I get comments like: "I didn't know you smoked!", and I don't. I quit for good 3 years ago.
So to answer the question, I won't let anyone even smoke near the car. If I see someone nearby even smoking, I'd be enticed to put up the windows and the the air to recirculate, ;)
cueball 08-27-2003, 07:57 PM I can say that I never have and never will smoke. None of my friends do so there is very little pressure to start. The fact that I am a runner also gives me very little motivation.
I don't have a problem when other people smoke so long as they don't do it in an offensive way such as blowing smoke right next to you. If you want to take your life in your own hands so be it. Just as long as it doesn't affect me.:)
TJRX8 08-27-2003, 08:07 PM Wow.
I can't believe how many people smoke let alone in their RX-8 or any car. It iss funny how they know it's nasty and don't like the ashes everywhere but continue to smoke.
mikeb 08-27-2003, 08:10 PM i've had the 8 for a month and no smoke. I smoke a pack a day but I dont want to smoke in the 8. I got a ticket for throwing a smoke out of my last car and it was $1,291 PLUS 16 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Kurt Bob 08-27-2003, 08:59 PM The only people close to me that smoke are my parents (born back before they knew the dangers of smoking), and they know not to smoke in my cars or my house.
I've test driven cars owned by smokers. The stench is usually awful, and therefore bad for resale value (if nothing else).
Bottom line is ...the only smoke coming from my car will be from lighting up the tires.

And some exhaust...:D
Wankeler 08-27-2003, 09:12 PM I smoked 1+ packs a day for over the last 10 years, I quit the day I took delivery of my 8. I'm using the money I save ($3/day), to buy gas. 75% of the people who get in my car smoke... in their OWN cars, they know I quit so respect my new car.
If I ever had a business proposition that would allow me to purchase a replacement 8 (with more gadgets), I'd let that person smoke crack in my car if they wanted. (jk)
Peace
91vert 08-27-2003, 10:50 PM I've been smokin' in my 8. I didn't for the first couple of days just to linger in that wonderful new car smell, but I caved after that and fired one up.
I have not had any problems with ashes blowing back in or anything like that. I crack my window about 1/2 inch, and hold the cig right up there by the window so all of the "idle"smoke blows right out the window. Setting the A/C on fresh air is a must though, otherwise the smoke just recircs inside the car and that will tend to stink it up quick.
I've found with previous cars I've owned that if you have leather, and are very good about keeping the interior clean....and I'm talking about wiping down every washable surface in the car on a regular basis and putting a good leather conditioner on the seats, that the nasty smell is just not there. Maybe I just don't notice it because I smoke, but I think I have a pretty good sniffer when it comes to that. I've crawled into one of my friend's cars who smokes very infrequently in it, and it reeks. She just doesn't ever scrub down the inside of her car like I do. If you don't have leather......you're screwed. That smell will always be lingering in that upholstery.
My pre-RX-8 car (Mazda Millenia S) has currently been sitting outside in the 90+ degree temps for the past month (haven't found a buyer yet), I bought it brand new and lit up a cig as soon as I drove it off the lot, probably smoked about 1000 cigarettes in it over the past 4 years, kept it very clean inside (wiped down the inside with hot soapy water at least once a month and treated the leather), it still looks brand new inside, and I do not detect a hint of stale smoke smell in it today. This makes me believe it is all about keeping it clean.
I remember when I was a kid and my grandma smoked in the car it was like riding around with Cheech and Chong. She would never even crack the window, always had the A/C on recirc, and always had an overflowing ashtray full of butts. Her car would always smell like total ass.....especially after sitting in the hot sun. Ewwww!!
AfroCreame 09-21-2003, 01:35 AM Hell NO...PERIOD. I used to smoke from the age of 18 to 27...I'am now 28. Cigs stink. If people can't respect your ride...then leave em on the curb.
mikeb 09-21-2003, 01:45 AM If I dont smoke in the 8, no one smokes in the 8

AMEN!
I've gotten a prescription for the nicotrol plastic cigarette... and I keep it in the ashtray for those times I need NICOTINE!!!
Chuck Clifford 09-21-2003, 08:41 PM It must be one fine machine to make people quit and subdue such a powerful urge. Congrats to all those who have quit, or slowed down. Add that to the list of little things. RX-8's are out there saving lives.
No smoking allowed in my 8.
Zoom2X 09-22-2003, 01:14 AM I quit smoking in March, wife still smokes. She really has a fit if she can't smoke when we are going somewhere so we take my old 85 Toyota P/U (A/C just blew a seal in Aug. so it can be pretty hot inside). She's ridden in the 8 only 3 times in the 3 weeks I've had it. Won't let her take her monster cup of coffee in the 8 either she has a bad habit of sitting it on the floor and kicking it over.

Good! People like you REALLY PISS ME OFF. Have you ever thought that there might be motorcycles behind you? Most smokers apparently don't, as I've been hit several times with 'expended cigarettes'. I did have the opportunity and pleasure once of catching a thrown butt and depositing it back in the startled owner's window, where it smouldered on the back seat.
You people are always starting brush fires, grass fires, FOREST FIRES the likes of which kill the firefighters, airtanker pilots and hotshot crews working to put them out. You show total disregard for the rest of the world and the lungs of those people who happen to be driving near you.
I have to say, of all the things about California, one of the only ones that I am actually very happy about is the ban on smoking near businesses and restaurants. It's filthy and disgusting and, while I grew up around it, it turns my stomach these days, especially when I'm trying to eat.
$1,291 and 16 hours of community service is fair. I only wish more people
would get caught.
Incidentally, I have no problem with smokers stinking up their own houses, catching their own beds on fire, and giving themselves cancer/lung disease/nasty hair/yellow nails- It's their right. As long as their smoke stays on them, and their butts are resposibly disposed of, I see no problem. Rarely, however, is that the case these days.

Amen Brother! I agree 100%.
I once had an ash-hole throw a butt out his window and it landed at the bottom of my windshield right where the air comes in the ventilation system. Good thing I don't own a gun...
Smoker's generally are the rudest people. They thinking nothing of stinking up a restaraunt and throwing thier butts wherever they please. Where I work there is a smoking area about 10 feet from the door with a big ashtray. Every week there are at least a couple hundred butts on the ground around it.
Saw a sign once that read something like this:
"Second hand smoke is a by-product of your nasty habit.
I like to drink beer, so if you don't blow smoke in my air I won't piss in your drink"
Florida is now a smoke free State in restaraunts!!!

Me too, and I think the service should be picking up butts. A couple days of picking up nasty ass butts might you think twice.
mikeb 09-22-2003, 04:12 PM I had too spend my 16 cleaning a park
No, of course not. I wouldn't even let people smoke in my Miata, with the top down....
