View Full Version : Midwest F-Body Club TrackWeekend @ Road America
BlueRenesis82 08-09-2006, 06:34 PM EDIT October 14th and 15th folks!
EDIT
Hey all, just to you everyone know, my local chapter of the F-body club is having another track weekend at Road America, one is the premier road courses in the whole USA!
It's $350 for 2 days of driving (you can sign up for only 1 day if you want, thats $200) which includes FREE instructors who are great! They have helped me out a ton on that track!
website is roadamerica.fbody.us
I know there are at least 2 people (including me) who have signed up for this weekend! I would love to see more Chicago/local people there! Free rides are even availible if you want to come but just don't want to drive.

Hey, that guy at GingerMan with the 650hp SLK made my day. He had a horrible setup, but a lot of power. Like I said, when he found out I had basically OEM power and no R-Compounds I could see his ego deflating. Sigh...if only I had brought a camera to capture the moment.

depends how much driving you want to do before. I would be happy to host you 2 at my place if you are ok with sleeping on the floor. Road America is only about an hour and change from my house.
mac11 08-18-2006, 12:36 AM ok. well it doesnt matter one way or the other to me. im not much of a morning person but i can deal. illlet mike chime in on this when he gets to work tomorrow.
What time will we need to be at the track by saturday to get setup and ready to go?

well, I think tech starts at 7 or so. The first run group is prob on track at 830 or 8. The earlier we are there, the more time to get setup, and make sure that there is no issues with our cars. Personally I would be there at open, but thats just me.
Red Devil 08-18-2006, 10:21 AM My vote is to drive to Milwaukee on Friday night to avoid all the more morning driving on Saturday.
mac11 08-18-2006, 11:44 AM Good call. leaving at 4am doesnt sound good to me at all.

I was planning on getting a room at a local inn, but I don't think that they have triple beds in the room. I might be wrong, but I will call and check.
mac11 08-21-2006, 12:00 PM yea probably not, i just want to figure it out so if i need to book a room i can so i dont end up sleeping in my car.....again.

yeah, there will be no sleeping in the car unless voluntary. I don't know if you guys have air beds, or just want to crash on my floor, but I could get airbeds if necessary.

There are always a ton of vettes there, but it looks like I get a 350Z to play with in intermediate. You will also see a couple 928 Porsches there, they of the 3k window job.
Red Devil 08-22-2006, 09:07 AM 928s are hot. Almost bought one after I lost my last RX-7, but upkeep was going to be a lot.
Blue, you gonna be around? I'll give you a call so we can all book at the same hotel up there.

want to.. tried too. Guy that wanted to buy my car never called me back. The 8 i was looking at *looked* like a good deal. 04, 3000 miles for 21 and it looked like i had room to bargain. However i car faxed it today and it has 9 issues. I didn't pay for the carfax to get the story behind what is on there but it doesnt look good.
Makes almost perfect sence that its got such low miles that it was down in the hurricane last year and spent a lot of time sitting around getting repaired. Could very easily be one of those millin cars that were underwater a year ago. Not really anything I want to take a chance on.
So it looks like its back to business as usual as if it never happened.
RedSheDevil 08-31-2006, 08:37 AM yea you dont want any 8 that doesnt swim well ...

RedSheDevil 09-13-2006, 09:27 AM ok i win ... if i get my house all done and listed this week, i'm allowed to go out this weekend. a friend of mine asked if i wanted to go to sound bar ... never been, but looks cool. anyone interested?

I figured that was one of the things we would be doing. My throttle cable/gas pedal is giving me problems the last day or 2 also. I need to fix that. I think the adjustment on the cable slipped off the mounting bracket. The gas pedal doesnt return from the floor on its own but the throttle body closes and rpms drop.

Didn't know if he would be pissed or not after he said he was just going to have it done at a shop.
So now the shocks are on all 4 corners. Just waiting on the new end links to put on the front, recut the threads on the left front ball joint and adjut the height on the corners and he will have his car back. A grand total of about an hour or 2s worth of work.

devildog1679 09-28-2006, 01:27 PM I am new to this forum and to the 8 as well. I was thinking about attending the road america event. It sounds like fun. I never have been able to fully experience the drivability of my car. Mainly because my wife has s*%t fit. I was looking on the road america site and it said I need a helmet. My question is do they provide them or do I need to bring my own? If I pay for the one day $200, how much driving time will I get? The site said 350 mi? Any help will be appreciated.
RedSheDevil 09-28-2006, 01:38 PM hey devil,
here's what I know, but I'm sure "the boys" will chime in shortly:
Each day you get 3-4 runs in of approximately 20 minutes each. The track is about 4 miles long, so you go around 10-15 times (depending on how badly you want to flog your baby!) each run session.
Instructors are there and are of no charge (but you should find them first thing in the morning and reserve one for your session). Any of the 8 guys who are there will be able to point out who the instructors are, or you may be able to ask the guys who do the tech inspection on your car beforehand.
You have to bring your own helmet; they don't supply them.
And if you want to just hang out and go on some ridealongs with the guys who are already signed up, that's only $5. BlueRen is our resident Road America guru so I bet he'll chime in with times to meet, where to paddock, etc.
I think we have 6 people going that weekend, but I could be wrong.

A good helmet will run you about $200 ish. Should be DOT approved, which most are. Ride alongs, as RSD mentioned are available, and are a ton of fun to whet your appetite. We will prob be there early in the morning, as tech starts at around 7 ish. There will be fun and chair and most likely food.
IMHO the instructors are worth the price of admission just by themselves. They are great guys that have that track wired, and can give you a ton of tips to make it safe and fun.
Peresonally, if it was up to me, you would come. :)

you could always check and see if allen would let you borrow his for the day. Personally if I was going to invest in something to keep my head safe, I wouldnt want to depend on the previous owners usage or lack thereof.
As far as a specific location we really don't have one, I would prefer to be on the asphalt this time to make it easier to work on the cars and such, but I really dont care. There is a nice new area that they just put together right around the paddock, so I kinda figure that is where we will end up.
RedSheDevil 09-29-2006, 01:12 AM hey blue, if i get a RA map can you show me where this area is and i'll post the pic with the area marked so people will know?
alnielsen 09-29-2006, 02:26 AM I would never by a helmet that someone else used. Just dropping a helmet to the floor can damage it with out you even knowing it. On top of that, if you buy it from someone you don't know, you have to worry about lice or a scalp desease.
I have an old one that can be borrowed. It is DOT & Snell 80 rated size xxl.
Blue, is this circled area what you were talking about?

Does it matter if its an open face helmet. I think that may be more comfortable.
mac11 09-29-2006, 01:19 PM Does it matter if its an open face helmet. I think that may be more comfortable.
No and i was told an open face helmet is preferable in a car with airbags. I know RedDevil and Al both also have open face helmets and if i had to guess so do RSD and blue....
Personally i think close face helmets are more comfortable but open face deff fees like it has better visability. "Feels" whether it is true or not....dunno. I dont have a closed face helet to take to the track and compare.

Thank you for the offer. I may need to take you up on that. First I need to measure my grape to see what size I am.
Red Devil 09-29-2006, 03:07 PM That is the part I have circled. At the bottom of the picture is turn 1.
I think where we should meet is where Blue was set up last time I was there. If you follow the main road leading into the main paddock area, you'll work your way south leading to turn 1. There is a small covered area with nitrogen tanks but still more than enough room to fit quite a few chairs underneath cover. Good location, and not nearly as crowded as other places, imo.

wisconsinben 09-29-2006, 03:55 PM Is that near gate 3? ^^^^^
Red Devil 09-29-2006, 04:04 PM No, you would enter at the top of PDF at Gate 6, which is where the registration building is. If you follow the road from there it will take you back to the Main Paddock on the pdf. You are getting close to Gate 3 at turn 1. But gate 3 puts you on the other side of the track.

well, I wouldnt push YOURSELF any further than you are comfortable. The car is amazing capable, but the main problem will be driver input. Once you get your inputs down, and are smooth the car will really amaze you. But I will tell you that I would HIGHLY reccomend getting an instructor to ride with you.
Yes, $5 gets any spectators/riders in the gate.

Personally, if you are going, bleed your brakes with some good DOT4 fluid, I use Motul 600, also grab another set of brake pads. Its amazing how much and how fast you can chew thru a set of brake pads.

It looks like I got some friend of my wife to loan me some helmets. I will find out for sure on Monday. If I get them I am most deffenitly going :ylsuper: Whats this deal abot bleeding my brakes? I may have to look at the DIY threads, I am no mechanic. Do I get the pads from MAZDA dealer or from any other auto parts store? I'll bring them but I won't be able to install them in case I need to. Some one will have to show me how. I only chnged pads once and that was on my 94 Z28. It all comes down to the helmets.

I asked the dealer here in Madison and he said until I get that letter they can't look at my car. They said I need to bring the actual letter in with me. Is he BS me or what  ?

Sounds correct to me. I believe I heard that there is a number on the the letter or th letter itself that the turn into MNAO to get the money back from them for doing the work.
I would get the pads from Mazda as Im sure the stock pads mazda uses are better than the crap they sell at autozone. And if you order some Motul or some ATE superblue and get to the track early enough saturday we should be able to swap it out that day and brake pads are simple.
Either way you should come out for the experience even if you dont drive. I don't think Al is driving, correct me if im wrong, Al. And I know RedSheDevil is not driving herself but will be riding with whoever she can get to pick her up :naughty: Me and RedDevil just got our first seat time this summer so we are far from pros, and i dont even own an 8.
It should be a pretty good time regardless and you will probably learn a lot even if you dont drive.

Thanx for the info, I printed a letter I found on a recall thread. Mybe I can fool the dealer  I was reading that we need #'s on the cars, do they write those on there or do i need to do it. What do I use?

If you didn't get your recall letter yet I wouldn't worry about it. The dealer will probably know when the letters go out in their area and when to start expecting people to come in. You don't want to piss dealers off or they will screw you over every chance they get. Trust me.
I know Blue and Red have some vinyl stick on letters? I am probably just going to use she polish or I think there is stuff that is specifically for writting on cars that wont hurt the paint?
alnielsen 09-30-2006, 03:23 PM I got my recall done w/o the letter. Back in early Sept., I was at the dealer for other things and asked about the recall. They said they wouldn't be ready untill the 15th. I got it done this week. Tested, EMU flash, and leading spark plugs replaced.
I will be at RA as a spectator. Or driving coach.
The reason for having a open face helmet in a airbag car is, if the airbag goes off the full face type can get cought on the expanding bag and break your neck.
Contact Paper works great for temporary numbers. Available at your hardware store. If you use shoe polish, wax the car first. If makes it much easier to get the stuff off.
Anyone got the tool for the rear calipers?
alnielsen 09-30-2006, 03:41 PM Are most of you guys experts at this racing stuff? I have never done anythinh like this before. I hope I can make it. I'm going to a bike shop this weekend to see about geting a helmet.See sig.

I assume you mean the one to push the piston back into the caliper? I know RedDevil has one and he said he saw that Blue had one, too.

Thanx for the info. My car runs great so i dont suspect it has any issues. I will just wait for the 15K service then.

Thanx for the offer, I’ll find out Monday if I need a helmet or not. I will probably register on Monday night. Since most of you are familiar with the WI weather do you think I need winter tires? We just got the new 07 4dr wrangler so on days it snows I can use that but what about the day after, how does the 8 handle, my wife won't let me have her car for more than a day :nono: So I was thinking snow tires may be a necessity

Yea that is right. The tool Blue is talking about is a little cube thing with studs on each face. You find the set of studs that matches your piston studs and attach it to a ratchet and turn it back in.

yes, you would definitly need a set of snows if you are planning on driving the car thru the winter.

I have the rear caliper tool also...after seeing how easy it was for Blue I couldn't not get it.
And driving coaches are always appreciated.

devildog1679 10-02-2006, 09:22 AM Does anyone know if you damage something is the warrenty void because you took it on a track? Would my insurance co. cover any damages? Just want to know all the details before I sign up (OK the wife wants to know :nono: )

well, technically you arent racing the car, its not timed. But personally I wouldnt take the car to a dealership with the numbers still on the side (did that already), it creates an uncomfortable conversation.
With insurance you are pretty much on your own, there are companies that offer insurance for this type of thing, not super cheap, but not horrible either. Might not be a bad idea to look into.

I think your right about the dealer thing. As for the insurance I guess I can always say It happened on the highway, as long as the car is still drivable. I guess the best thing is to drive conservatively.
