Hi,

I driving the car over the weekend and noticed that my door ajar warning light and the dome light briefly turned on during a fast right hand turn. It happened twice. I was sure I had fully closed both front doors.

I'm taking my car in for the 1,000km service tomorrow. I'll see if they have to adjust anything.

If symptoms don't lie, it seems likely your car is FLEXing, and as you turn, the 'twist' allows the door light switch to open, therefore the dome and door ajar light coming on.

I'd have a dealer check it out. By the way, just HOW fast was this "right hand turn"? :cool:

Do you have the alarm shock sensor upgrade? If the sensitivity is too high, it will do this, also.

I just got the car back from its first service. They had to slightly adjust the doors to correct the problem. Other than that, the car has been fine.

Do you know the oil type they used in your 1000km service was it 5W 20 ??? VALVOLINE?

did my 1000km service. they don't change oil. just check the car, adjust ECU, idle, check lights, panels, suspension bits etc. tighten things here and there and check if there are any faults.

oil change at 10,000km.

i asked about mazda rx-8 top oil. essendon mazda didn't have it yet but will be there next week. i don't trust that date.

I watched them do the service from the waiting area. they didn't change the oil. Ask mktchin said, Mazda recommend using only their "special" rotary oil. Essendon Mazda will have some for sale soon. I'll be interested to see what brand of oil it is. They plug some sort of computer into the engine bay, ran a few tests, had the car on hoists and tightened a few suspension fittings, checked the tyres and brakes and a few other things. They also washed and vacuumed my car.

I'll have to really corner quickly to see if the light comes on again!

something i noticed when closing the door was the shake in the no-existant pillar. That may flex causing the light to come on ? Do you lean up against it ?

Donaldc this just happened to me this evening. Happened twice in quick succession around right hand turns. Not cornering hard at all....say 30kmh in 90 degree street turns. Guess thats something for them to look at besides the sump baffles.

I, too, have had this problem, but it has happened while driving straight down the freeway and city streets, and while waiting at a stoplight. The door locks click as though they are unlocking, the door ajar indicator comes on, and the interiour light turns on. I took it to the dealer yesterday, and his first comment was that the doors needed to be tightened up. Now that he has actually looked at the car, he says the door hinges don't need to be tightened. He doesn't know what else to do, so it will go un-repaired for now. I am not happy about that, but what can i do? Has anyone resolved this problem without adjusting the door hinges? If i pull on the drivers door while the door ajar indicator is on, the indicator will go off. It is creepy, like there is a poltergeist in the car.

This should be easy enough to fix.

The switch that operates the light is located on the rear door, covered by a rubber grommet. If you press it in and out you can clearly hear the clicking noise that Storm mentions.

The travel needed to turn it on and off is very short, so it could be vulnerable to small flexes if the front door was not fully depressing it.

The front door latches onto the silver D shaped fitting on the back door, and that looks to be adjustable. At least they usually are. However, you would need the proper shaped tool as it isn't either a standard slot or 4 point Philips screwdriver socket.

There is a raised metal pressing on the front door that does the work of pushing the switch, so if the general alignment of the doors looks OK when closed then just tape a piece of cardboard (or something of suitable thickness) to that spot on the door. Once you're satisfied that it's working OK you could make a more permanent metal striker plate and attach it to the door.

You might also need to do both sides of the car.

If you want to see exactly where the switch hits the door, put a tiny dab of some suitable substance, such as grease, on the grommet and then shut the door. (Or this being an Aussie forum, Vegemite works well too :) ). Check where the round mark appears, and then clean it off.

And if you don't fancy drilling the door and making up a metal striker plate you could achieve a similar effect by making a spacer gasket and fitting it behind the switch mechanism. Again, it uses a slightly unusual screw-head but the right tools/screwdriver heads are readily available, even at places like Dick Smiths.
