View Full Version : Just Where Can I get My RX-8 Dynoed??

Call me uninformed, but just where does one look for DYNO service? In the phone book??, just know where your local speed shop is??, or exactly how should I go about doing this and how much does one pay for the service generally?

I want to know EXACTLY what my car is doing, BEFORE I decide whether to part with it. I mean 9 HP down is OK, but I'm seeing dyno graphs here that suggest 170 HP... meaning a 68HP drivertain loss or 29%!!?? What is that? I must be charging up the 'ol Flux Capacitor full time!

Maybe mine is better :D for unknown design variance reasons. If it is, it's a keeper... if not I want to know BEFORE OCT 1st!!

Thanks for any help. :)

how much does a dyno run cost? i hear they're quite expensive...

It varies depending on which place, but it might be ~$60-$80 for 3 pulls. Some people might think it's expensive, but I think it's kinda cool just to have the dynoplots to see what your car really does.

It varies from shop to shop and what part of the country you are in, but from what I've seen I'd expect to pay about $75-$100 for a baseline session (3-6 pulls).

I just called two NH dynojet places I got from compaddict and they are $100 for one, $150 for another 3 pulls. Sounds like it may be a little high, but they are racing guys, not just a garage.

What the hell is one bill compared to $31.4K anywho. I just want to know once and for all.

Should I wait longer would be the next question. I have only 1000 miles so far. Will it hurt it doing it this soon or should I just do it now anyhow?

Thanks guys.

I might dyno it now -- not as part of some self justification for returning the car -- but just for fun and as a benchmark to test it again when it has maybe 8K or 10K on the odometer or after an ECU mod/intakemod/exhaust mod if I ever so desire.

I think Nebraska is the only state not listed on the website with a dyno place  South Dakota has a listing for goodness sakes.

well that's not bad...$50-$150 is not bad at all, i was expecting around $200+ or -...last weekend on a night out on the town with my RX-8* i spent $260 Friday and Saturday night...so $150 is not bad at all...

*i drove up and down Wrigleyville (specifically the street right by Wrigley Field with all the bars lined up) and OMG the attention this car gets...i actually had people run up to my car while i'm driving just to look inside the car and give me a thumbs up...i could hear from every direction, "LOOK! it's those new rotary cars!" or "THAT'S AN RX-8! I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE BEFORE!"...thanks for reading this as i had to let it out to deflate my huge head at the moment...

Our choices for NH are just a little limited so I looked at what is available for MA. ACS Racing has a program called Dyno Days (http://www.acsracing.com/dynodays.html) which is 3 pulls on the dyno for $50. The only catch is that it is on Saturday. Hey, that works better for me!

I spoke with Mazda via the phone about this issue, and unlike all of the prior calls to Mazda the operator seemed to be really interested in what I had to say and we chatted about the car for quite a while. What did I like (handling, overall feel, stereo controls, etc), what did I dislike (power, key+fob, bad front appearance with front license plate, door sills too high). And, of course... the power issue.

According to him, Mazda has been following this fairly closely, and among many other points was how difficult it is to fixed-chassis dyno the RX-8. In particular, if the computer senses that things are "not quite right," then it will adjust the engine to try and compensate, particularly at high RPMs, and particularly by making the engine run overly-rich. He indicated that Mazda has performed lots and lots of testing before re-releasing the horsepower numbers, and that they feel very confident in the new numbers.

I pointed out that regardless of the difficulties, there are competitors' cars whose published power graphs more closely match the do-it-yourself dyno tests, and that claiming a particular HP value in a private, un-disclosed layout with impossible-to-reproduce results is not a good thing. He agreed.

Anyhoo... I don't know if the "ECU makes engine overrich in high-RPM, high-slippage situations" excuse is real or a made-up excuse for why we can't dyno on our own, but I thought I would toss it out there.

Opps.. just called them, and they are not doing it anymore! Said no participation. He says it is $150 /hr minimum and you can do 50 pulls if you want.

But he also says if we can get 15-20 people to come on a Sat we can have a dyno party!! BYOF and grill there while cars are a-reving on the dyno. Sounds like fun.

Anyone interested??? Actually any 15-20 of you interested??

I dyno at www.wangsautosports.com in Pelhem, NH. Not the best place but at $100 for before and after dyno run is okay with me.

I just came from short test drive for 6-speed RX-8 with GT package. Acceleration was linear and it pulsl all the way. but there is was no snap you back in your seat feeling.

It was a bit noisy after 100, I could spin the tires off the line easily. It hugs the corner well, on ramps the tires started complaining at 40 MPH!.

Now if the RX-8 dyno at 185 WHP, that is real disapointment. If true, it means that RX-8 is making 220-225 HP.

I will wait for next 300HP edition!

Nashua.

Bummer, I was looking forward to a $50 dyno.

Count me in for the "dyno party". I think it would be cool to meet a few people who are as obsessed with their RX-8s as I am and it also gives us a unique opportunity to see if our cars are generating the same amount of power (i.e. same dyno under exactly the same conditions).

I'll let you guys spend the money... I'm not really concerned with the power right now. When Sport Compact Car dynos it themselves (properly) we'll have an adequate representation of what the actual numbers should be, and what we should be aiming for (if you are so inclined) when you are running your car on a strip somewhere.

Cheers all, enjoy your dynos.

So what you are insinuating is that the dynos done so far from different places just strap the car down and let it rip? without no orderly procedure?

You put more trust in a magazine than from dynos done on owners cars? Dynos that have proven quite consistent with each other?

Even if SCC does come out with another dyno showing it makes the correct hp or possibly higher, how can you put that in high regard when owners from different places have dyno'd there cars and resulted in consistent figures?

How do you know that Mazda wont give a ringer to SCC (or for whomever has reviewed the RX-8) to fudge the numbers just to reassure owners that there is no problem and the car is running how its suppose to?

Can dyno give you a readout of fuel consumption (mpg) at various speeds? My dealer says they'll do this by driving the car around for a week to validate my claims of 16 mpg in just about all driving conditions. If they come back and tell me it's not a problem, I'm not sure I'll believe and I don't know what kind of hard data/graphs they will be able to show me to back up their claims. I'd like a third-party to give me hard data on consumption. Any ideas?

i dont know if thats such a good idea, dude...
i mean, to let some GUY drive your car around in "all driving conditions" for a WEEK? imagine what some moron could do to it just for fun, theres gotta be some other way
