View Full Version : I was the first call to have Mazda buy mine back...
Steve T 08-25-2003, 12:36 PM I just got of the phone with Mazda and was told that I was the first person to take them up on the buy back!
It sounds like they will not start processing the forms until I return the letter (I have not received mine yet...) with the boxed checked to buyback the car.
They said that I would have several forms coming out to me and that the once they have been completed the car would have to be inspected by a Mazda rep.
Wonder how fast this will move along?
They asked me if the performance was the only factor. I told them that for me the main problem is that I never planned on keeping the car more than a year tops and the effect of the "adjusted hp figures" on the depreciation of the car has scared me into selling it back to them.
poison123 08-25-2003, 01:05 PM Why would you only keep the car for a year to begin with?
poison123 08-25-2003, 01:30 PM Ya, but if he can afford all those other cars, why is he worried about the value of a car that barely costs what half some of those do.
Steve T 08-25-2003, 02:23 PM "Why is he worried about the value of a car that barely costs what half some of those do."
The fact that the car is relatively cheap compared to other cars that I own is irrelevant. I buy them all with an ownership cost in mind and the RX-8 just went up (in my mind) more than the $500 they offered, the long term maintenance is pretty much worthless in my case.
My RX-8 just hit the 600 mile mark last Thursday, I had not driven it hard until that time. I am not necessarily disappointed in the performance, just not as impressed with it as I would like to be.
If you choose to keep yours, that is your decision and I cannot/will not fault you for it.
8thSin 08-25-2003, 02:44 PM Steve T.. will you give me one of your cars?? I'll take the Viper if you dont mind. and do you have pics of all these vehicles????
Steve T 08-25-2003, 02:58 PM 8thsin, Sorry but I am not ready to part with the Viper yet...
Posted a partial pic of the garage here:

8thSin 08-25-2003, 03:05 PM Just whenever you're ready, I'll wait - Did you strike oil in Texas?? What do I have to do to be able to own all of those cars?
Steve T 08-25-2003, 03:48 PM Question - "What do I have to do to be able to own all of those cars?"
Answer - Work hard and marry the right woman!

A rather dubious "honor" if you ask me!
Steve T 08-25-2003, 04:06 PM Not really proud of it, more suprised than anything. Just thought a few of the more angry posters would have beat me to it.

I may be wrong but I think that the most vocal posters are not even effected by this because they do not even own the car.
partovi 08-25-2003, 04:16 PM If i were steve i would have had them buy it back too, then i would get the RX-7 when it comes out. I think i could stay busy with that garage till it does. :p
Tigster 08-25-2003, 07:31 PM I would agree, if I had mine at this time I would sell it back immediately. Espically if I paid sticker or over sticker. The dealer by me (cory fairbanks mazda) has 4 on their lot. Seems like now you may be able to negoiate the price. So basically sell it back if you paid over sticker and buy another one at less than msrp.
8thSin 08-25-2003, 07:37 PM either way you look at it -- if you buy the car back, and save 2000 on it.. its the same as keeping it and receiving the 500 credit and free service - It's all the same ppl.. If you are really that pissed about the missing power, return it and go buy something else now that you have the option

Way funny! And, sadly, true.

Steve,
First cool garage, second sorry the RX-8 doesn't meet your need, and third I don't blame you on the Viper. I got to drive a black Viper today. It owned by one of the senior managers in my company. I let him drive my RX-8 a few days ago, he' had a couple of RX-7's in the past. Anyway he was kind enough to return the favor with his viper.
I can tell all of you that if you get a chance to ride or even better drive a viper take it. Its worth every minute. Their is not any real comparison to the RX-8 but then the 8 is not in the same class as the viper.
Well Steve I hope you find something to fit in the hole left by your RX-8.
RodsterinFL 08-25-2003, 09:01 PM uh. I only have one car and a buy and wait would not work for me AND I have tinted the windows and added strakes too- $350.
I spke with the local Rotary Club group leader on the phone tonight and asked their opinion of all of this. He commented that the other models had ower horsepower (except 3rd gen) and were quite fast - enjoy it and take the service.
oh, Steve, I'll take the Porsche ya?

The service agreement is gonna fall a little short of $1,500 over 4 years. Four oil changes a year will save you $100 per year. The fluid changes at 15,000 and 30,000 miles ain't gonna add up to much either. Certainly nothing close to the $1,100 remaining.
Plus, the sales price, I'm predicting, will be considerably lower than just $2,000 less than paid this summer. The same eight cars have been sitting at one of our dealerships for about 10 days now. Still too early to get an accurate picture of how well this car will sell. I'm hoping that by Sept 30 the picture will be a little clearer.
antman_x 08-25-2003, 11:18 PM Steve T please keep this string going with how things turn out with the buy back. Love your garage but have you ever taken on any tuner projects? Why not keep the RX8 and make it a project car and create the fastest rx8 money can buy?
and just curious but no ferrari or lamborgini. why?

Mebee swap that mazda badge on the rx8 for a BMW and you'll keep it?

Lower published HP figures aren't going to make the RX-8 depreciate any faster than it would have anyway; the buyback was tailor made for someone like you who tends to drive his cars a few months then get bored with them and move on to something else. No offense meant, BTW, just the analysis of a pattern. I'm the same way myself, but after buying four cars in the past three years, three new, because none of them have really turned out to be what I thought they would be in the long term, I'm a bit sick of throwing away $10K - $20K at a time myself. :D
In all seriousness, in your case I can't think of a better financial outcome.
Steve T 08-26-2003, 08:24 AM Billk - You are correct in assuming that the buyback is tailor made for someone with my car buying habits/addiction. The thought of getting out of a car after 2 months and not losing a dime definitely appeals to me.
RobDickinson - No Z8 in my garage! Just don't like BMW's.
antman_x - "just curious but no Ferrari or Lamborghini. why?"
I have driven a few Ferrari's over the years and they just don't appeal to me, "ergonomics" must not translate to Italian :D.
Also it feels like I am going to break every lever and switch in the thing.
I live in the sticks, closest service for either is 90 miles at best and trust me they need service every few thousand miles. The closet dealer is in Dallas and they seem to be in and out of business every other year.
I will update this post as I move forward with Mazda in the buyback process.
blizz81 08-26-2003, 08:51 AM RobDickinson - No Z8 in my garage! Just don't like BMW's.
Steve T: goodyrx8 - I would have to keep the Z8, not going to be making them anymore (I think) plus it is just plain bad a$$.
Sorry to thread-jack a bit, but now I'm confused on how you feel about BMWs :)
RX8Tim 08-26-2003, 01:36 PM This is my first post here on this forum. I have been a member for a few weeks and have been catching up on the latest RX-8 news after I spotted one a few weeks ago and decided to pursue one for my every-day driver. Its been interesting to read all of your comments and to look at all of your photos of your cars.
I bought my RX-8 last week, just before the HP issue came out. I have enjoyed it for the past few days. I have accessories ordered for it and expect that some of them will be arriving soon, but I have decided to return the car, for the reasons mentioned on some of the posts prior to this one regarding resale value for those of us that trade every year or two, especially when this news hits the car mags.
I called the 1-800 number this morning and spoke with a very nice guy. He didn't pressure me at all to keep the car. He asked questions regarding the condition and mileage of the car. He asked why I wanted to return it and I simply stated the HP issue and the uncertainty regarding the resale value. After those questions, he stated that a few papers would be mailed to me and if I could quickly fill them out and return them, that someone would call me to arrange a drop-off location to take the car. It sounds like a very easy process. They did mention that any money paid for GAP insurance, interest, inflated pricing by dealers, would not be included in the return price paid by Mazda. We'll see what happens next.
RX-Nut 08-27-2003, 02:05 PM Wow, I wonder how the are going to determine they price they pay you back with? If you paid any sort of markup, how can they not give it back to you? How about if you paid under? Hmm...... What kind of "refund" is that?
