I was installing a K&N "drop in" last night and when I cracked the air box, it and the filter were both wet with oil. I immediatley went in the house and did a search on our trusty RX8club forum and read many of the threads related to this issue. I guess in the end, no one really knows for sure if it is overfills, blow-by, PCV problems or some other issue.

Here is my theory. The oil I discovered was golden...implying that is is new oil. I went in for an oil change just last week and they only had 5w-20 in a 55 gal drum, so they filled up a large picher with 3.7 qts of oil and dumped nearly all of it in a funnel of abou the same size. At that point the oil in the funnel started to bubble and burp as air tried to escape the engine. Also the dipstick was out and oil came out the dipstick tube. My theory is that the filler neck does not flow oil in all that well and fresh oil is running out the ventillation tube on the filler neck and running directly in to the accordian intake and then on in to the filter and air box.

I will watch over the next few months for any oil to reappear and also make sure that I have them add oil slowly next time to see if the problem reoccurs.

I read a one post within the past 3 months that said Mazda may be replacing the 05 and earlier crankcase ventillation systems with the redesigned 06 version. Has anyone heard any more about this??

in an as needed /customer complaint sort of way. yes thre is a kit available to change it over to the newer system

Zoom: So if a customer is getting oil in the filter they'll use this new kit to convert to the new system? (my buddy's been having this issue...)

Sounds like someone put the oil in like a retard. You want a funnel that can reach past the vent line, and you want to pour it slow into the car. I'm sure blow by is possable, but I bet in your case. and alot of othes, it had to do with people filling up the oil in a hurry.

I would also like to add that I constantly keep mine full if not slightly over full and I have never seen any oil in my intake, which leads me to believe that the ones that are seeing it might be in the same situation you are in Schoonie3, where someone is adding it too quickly when changing the oil.

I agree with your theory.What is really interesting is that the 06 RX-8 puts the hosw directly into the lower manifold.I forsee gobs of oil ending up in the lower intake and oiled up plugs etc

Just unplug the tube when you fill!

Put a rag there, then you will know what happens, and also prevent any from raching the intake.

For the most part that wouldn't happen. Even if it did, it would be alot better having it ruin air filters mabe the maf and risk jamming the SSv (think thats what its called) and other parts up.

Remeber on a 06 the oil is dropping (if it is at all) below the fuel injectors. That fuel would help break it down anyways.

I just discovered oil on my filter today. :( I think I will try this next time to see if it is my technique. I doubt it, as I have only used royal purple and the oil was golden when i dabbed it onto a white rag. I am also pretty certain that my funnel reaches past the hose.

I'd be willing to bet it was the Nissan dealership that sold me the car.

I'm going to go with the oil comes from either filling the oil or an oil level that is too full... i had a problem, installed a catch can with clear tubing over a month ago, and there is not a trace of oil to be seen anywhere (even in the tubing)

i'll see what happens in a few weeks with my next oil change
