View Full Version : Will higher RPM on AUTOMATIC yield more HP?

I love the car. Trying to decide between an Auto and a Standard. Lots of traffic in SF Bay Area plus wife only drives Auto. She is willing to learn stick but if possible due to traffic, we would preffer auto if HP can be raised.

If it just a matter of putting a Superchip or any other tuner chip on the computer to move the rev limiter up to 9.5K, will an automatic yield more HP?

Is the rev limiter lower on the auto due to the capacity of the auto tranny?

Thanks in advance!

No, the engine in the auto cars is lacking the third set of ports and third path in the induction tract, as well as missing the third injector per rotor. There's no more power to be had from higher revs, since the auto motor won't breathe at the higher revs.

Anyway, the reason the auto motor is rev limited lower than the manual trans motor is because the torque converter can't handle revs higher than 7500 (so that's why they didn't bother giving the auto car the high-rev breathing gear). Raise the rev limit, and all you'll do is blow your transmission.

Gordon

I don't know much about turbocharging, but would that increase power without higher revs? Can the automatic handle a turbocharger?

Teach your wife to drive the MT. Once she learns she may just love it.

The bay area is a great place to own a MT car. I used to love tearing up and down the hills around Woodside in my old Cortina GT (my first car with a MT).

Looks like it will have to be the MT then.

Bay Area is great for MT, we live at the foot of the Los Gatos hills, back yard has the Santa Cruz Mtn Roads and the hills in Saratoga.

It will be fun. It makes it a whole lot easier she is willing to learn.

Thanks again for the quick response.

My wife bought my car for my birthday and I had no choice on transmissions. She doesn't drive a stick transmission and I got an auto.
