I'm taking a trip to Cuba soon, starting Aug 30. Going with my son's American football team to play another American team a the U of Havana on Sept 5th. Hopefully ESPN will have coverage.

So, has anybody visited Cuba and can give me advise about what to do/where to go while I'm there. The first few days we'll be at an all-inclusive resort at Veradero; the last few days a hotel in Havana. Looking forward to it and I want to get as much of the local flavor as I can while I'm there.

I'd pick up some cubans. Even if you don't smoke you could probably sell them and make a pretty penny, but that is slightly illegal.;)

haha, didn't realize at first you meant cigars. Yeah, I'll pick up some cubans. ;) I'm allowed to bring back cigars, rum, whatever but only $100 worth total. The $100 refers to what I pay in cuba, not what they're worth back here. The kicker is, I can't sell them so you won't see these on ebay.

Lookin' to have a good time there.

I thought cuban cigars were considered contraband and none can be brought legally out of the country?

Cuban cigars are illegal to bring into the country, but they look so much like other cigars it is almost impossible for anyone to tell.

Cohiba is my favorite. I am not a big cigar fan, but I would smoke a Cohiba anyday.

LOL
I look at it now and I realize how funny that looks.
Selling people on Ebay might be a little tricky.:p

This isn't quite true; we've researched this thoroughly with State, Customs, etc. You can bring back Cuban cigars on two conditions. One, you're in Cuba with permission of state (normally a cultural or humanitarian visit.) Two, you can't sell them when you get back. They can be given as gifts. Max to bring back: $100 worth. But as I don't smoke, and no one close to me does, I probably won't get any. I don't plan to spend my precious week there scouring around for cigar deals.

Anyone been to Cuba have have any comments/ advice other than cigars? I'd like more touristy-type info. I'll spend half my time in Havana, the other half at a Veradero resort.

I'm back! For you regulars who may have noticed I've been offline, just returned from 8 awesome days in Cuba. Didn't bring back any cigars, though many in my group did. As long as purchase price is under $100, US customs just don't care. Also, we flew from Tiajuana, and Mexico doesn't care at all (they're not as anal as US.) So, if you go via TJ and have someone take 'em off your hands before heading north to the border your cigar supply can be virtually unlimited. I did bring back some rum and other liquers; very good and very cheap.

If anyone wants views or tips from a newbie in Cuba just let me know. BTW, my son's football team lost but we still had a blast and lots of great memories.
