16,000 Miles - 3 Sets of Brakes

I have 16,000 miles on my RX8. The OEM brakes squeeked after 5000 miles so I took them in and they replaced them with " high performance pads (so said the dealer). Those squeeked just as bad as the first set. So at 14,000 I took it back in and they replaced them again. They said the first replacements may have had too much metalic material in them. They said the brakes were not glazed.

Has anyone determined what the actual cause of the RX8 break squeek is from? I refuse to bed them due to the over abundance of police that seem to enjoy stopping me to look at my car (pulled over 3 times in 12 months - 3 warnings! No tickets). I can just see myself explaining why I almost put my head through the windshield 10 times in a 40 second interval.

Anyone have a dealer explain this problem or come up with a permanent fix? I have zero confidence I won't be in for new brakes in another 5000 miles.

The second set of pads the dealer gave me never squeaked. I'm using the EBC green stuff pads now. They do not make any noise.

Keep changing them, is free!

I had the brake pad changed for 4,5 times already with 36k on the car. The last time was worst, it wasn't the noise.

Guess what?

Its a metal grey paper slipping through from the left brake pad.

trade your car for a non-performance oriented one... all high performance pads are prone to squealing

well, I have to disagree somewhat. some of us are experiencing extreme amounts of squeal. i've tried bedding them to no avail. i agree that moderate noise is acceptable from high performance brakes. however, i've ridden in a handful of high performance cars and have never heard the constant, piercing squeal that I do in my 8. i'll be bringing in mine next week to have the latest brake TSB done.

I had the squeaky brakes as well with the dealer not able to fix it after multiple attemps. I recently had the latest brake TSB done 04-001/06 (http://www.finishlineperformance.com...01-06-1568.pdf) and so far so good.

I believe it is due to a defective "shim", when I replaced my pads with Hawk I noticed that one of the pads shims had come loose. I put the Hawks on and have zero noise.

My 8 sounds like a freakin metro bus when I pressed lightly on the brakes (ie coming to a stop light, etc).

I'm really skeptical of the whole "all good brake systems make that noise". I stop in traffic, and people turn heads because of the noise. There are 350Zs, BMWs, G35's, etc and they don't make this noise when they stop.

My friend drives a G35 with Brembos and has 40k miles on it....has never been replaced and doesn't squeal.

If it wasn't a problem, why would Mazda issue a TSB over it? Supposedly their new pads do better than the originals, but that has not been my experience.

I went in at 12k miles and got my pads replaced with their "improved" version. 8k miles later, and I'm back to sounding like a bus when I stop. I guess I'll be calling them up again to schedule another band-aid...

I was told by maintenance at my dealership after asking them about my squeaky breaks... they said they have new pads but if they are not installed correctly they will still squeak... something about some rubber piece or something... aye dunno, my breaks are in the "yellow" right now, so I am gonna have them fix it when that time comes..
