View Full Version : RX-8 vs FD, fuel economy
ProtoConVert 08-23-2003, 03:08 AM I'm pretty sure I read FD gets(got) 18/24 at least as an EPA rating, and unless Mazda decides to surprise us with a lower figure, the RX-8 gets 18/24 as well. Additionally... some people here have noticed mid-tens fuel economy on brand new GT's in real-world driving.
For any FD owners... what were/are your real world fuel economy figures?
For anyone... If real world fuel economy for FD's matches with RX-8's what does this mean?
rx7 rage 08-23-2003, 03:13 AM damn that's sad...na renesis rotary gets the same mpg as my twin turbo FD rx7....sorry, im still pissed about the 238 hp fiasco.
e46328 08-23-2003, 01:51 PM Isn't it because the FD was lighter?
vudoodoodoo 08-28-2003, 09:28 AM LOL! No way an FD makes 18 MPG city. At least mine didn't. I averaged 15 MPG with city and highway driving.
revhappy 08-28-2003, 09:33 AM 17/25, at least that's the EPA estimates from Edmunds for the FD.

...they were being very kind. really.
the RENESIS is actually capable of more than 20mpg in normal driving (no, not fast driving, normal driving), whereas the 13BREW kinda wasn't (other than in a speed-limit cruise down the highway).
neofreak 08-28-2003, 12:59 PM I've gotten 17.24mpg during break in of my FD.. of course thats crawling along, low or no boost.
25 freeway..
revhappy 08-28-2003, 02:10 PM I may be mistaken, but I have yet to see an RX8 get 25 MPG on the highway?

I get 14-16 mpg in my FD (high-flow intake/intercooler/exhaust, tuned rich), and I'm getting about the same in my RX-8. Mixed highway/city driving. Plus, I'm getting a lot of black soot deposited on my exhaust tip.
My bet is the '8 is tuned way too rich. Hopefully it will re-tune itself at some point.

24 MPG on highway here
93RedX7 08-28-2003, 07:17 PM I average between 16-18 mpg with mine. The best I've ever seen with it was 26 mpg. But that was two and a half consecutive hours of 70 mph highway driving.
I've been getting good mileage in the city 20mpg, I'm doing a highway trip this weekend. Should be close to 24 I hope!
rpm_pwr 08-28-2003, 08:47 PM Completely standard FD:
absolute worst:
9.92mpg (lots of idling, full AC, door to door boost, lots of short trips)
absolute best:
22mpg (freeway, occasional boost)
Most days I average 13-14mpg

rpm_pwr 08-28-2003, 08:53 PM One more thing:
For those out-of-towners like me, you can now just do your conversions in google.
eg search for "18l/100km to mpg" and it returns the mpg equivalent. As a bonus it also searches the web for, in this case, 18l/100km. Which is highly recommended as I now know that I'm at least getting better economy than most Escape/Tribute owners :)
