My pick from the very start of the World Cup has been Italy. But as a team I'd much rather see France win and really want to see ZIZU go out on top. The Italians are a bunch of whiney little flop artists, and the coruption going on right now is unsettling.

Italy got to the finals by barely beating Australia (ranked 42nd by FIFA), Ukraine (46th) and Germany (19th).

France got there by beating Spain (ranked 5th), Brazil (1st) and Portugal (7th).

Everyone goes with their full heart and determination to go for it all. Games can be decided by penalties and other things. The best player in the world can make a mistake costing him the game. They are humans at the professional level playing a sport. So as humans they are victims of something called imperfection. The way australia was playing they looked like one of the best teams yet they are ranked 42. A ranking is just that a ranking, it's who brings the game when it comes time to play thats all that matters. Rankings are actually based on actual results, not some guys opinion, and those same rankings were used in drawing the world cup groupings. To say that rankings mean nothing IS retarded. France faced only teams ranked in the top 10 in all their elimination games, Italy faced 19th, 42nd, 46th...

I always like seeing a less populous country go deep into the world cup, but c'mon, Australia??? And Germany? Most experts would agree that they are not even close to being a legitimate powerhouse these days.

If you think with your head, you'd realize France has earned their spot, Italy mostly lucked into it and has yet to earn my respect. Soccer loving nations with large populations SHOULD do well in the world cup. But luck is huge in soccer, so ya never know in the final.

My opinion is probably biased as Australia played Italy in Round 2 and Italy won the game by faking a foul in the final seconds (literally) of the game. They received a penalty, scored and the ref blew the whistle straight after; Australia lost 1-0.

Although that was unfair (again, biased as I'm aussie), its a game and in the end its all about who wins, regardless of how they win.

As for the FIFA rankings, they are evaluated over a course of 5 to 8 years, not just from recent performance. Australia is ranked 40-something because for the past 32 years, they didnt even qualify for the World Cup. Australia finally qualified thanks to a wonderful new coach and the team is in much, much better shape then before.

If Italy do win the finals, I'm sure 20 million Australians will be extremely pissed off, and happy at the same time. Happy because they would feel the (new) WC champions (Italy) had to resort to 'dirty tactics' to win with Australia, thus proving that game was probably one of Italy's toughest.

France all the way! Zidane has been the best soccer player in the world since Pele and I hope he wins it in his final soccer game. Oh yeah in French, Zizu means penis.

Half of the Italian players like to fix games so if the french pay them enough, they'll probably throw the game.

I want France. Italy has been playing well, but how they take dives and whine all the time really pisses me off. I believe that France is the better team and deserve to win. After all, they managed to win their final game of group play to advance without Zidane.

On the other hand, the only team to score on Italy so far is the USA and even that was an own goal. The Italian goalie has been the best keeper so far in the tournament and looked extremely impressive against Germany.

For the people talking about the rankings: The USA was ranked fifth in the world and only managed 4 shots on goal throughout the tournament. 5th ranked and only 4 shots on target?

I gotta agree with Ike here, England was terrible. Worst team out of the group of 16. 1 could argue Brazil, Portugal, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, and Argentina Italy were the strongest on paper, but definitely not England.

England is starting to see the problems with having a top division dominated by foreign players. Arsenal and Chelsea have helped prepare a number of players for teams that have done well this World Cup, but didn't play for England. You gotta wonder if Lehman would have played as well for Germany if he hadn't been playing in the Premiership for Arsenal. Would Cesc and Reyes be playing for Spain, and Van Persie for the Netherlands, and Eboue and Toure for the Ivory Coast if they weren't playing professionally in England? I don't think so. But at the same time, that takes opportunities away for English talent to develop at the top level.

Australia is a really underrated team... They are there because of losses in which their foreign players were too tired to travel from europe...

The only reason Australia played so well was because they combined all there individual skill and talent into one full team - gelled together by there outstanding coach, Gus Hiddink. The only reason we're not seeing Australia in the semi-finals, or even the finals is because of the ref.

Little Italy = Hell's Kitchen and the Italian population there has dwindled as has the neighborhood. Most of the restaurants that are there are awful tourist crap. You'd probably be better off going to a little Italian place near you. How's North Beach? I should be making another trip to San Fran/San Rafael in the not too distant future but have never checked out North Beach.

I am too far South from Frisco to give you a real report on North Beach - do know it is famous for it's food - Only suggestions - do not try to drive in the City! Like NY -taxi's better, Wall to wall traffic hassle -
Park somewhere far out, like Pleasanton and take the Bart train in (above ground subway -goes in long tunnel under Bay Bridge), then grab a trolly car to see the city and Frisco Little Italy - near both China town (try a clay pot special) and old Fisherman's Warf. Make sure you know what time the last Bart returns and catch the one just before that to get back!
The Pleasanton Bart is like a time machine - very modern out in the berbs and then the buildings and houses get older and older like a time machine all the way to The City!
Nothing really happening locally- the big deal is the MidState Fair, and the World cup is a whole universe away! Bambino Winery makes a very excellent "Dago Red!"

Zidane was going to live on forever regardless since he's one of the greatest players ever. There is talk of him coming to play for the NY Red Bulls which would almost be along the lines of when Pele came to play for the NY Cosmos. Even if he's old it would be nice to see some of the top Euro players come to the US, maybe Figo will come as well :)
