View Full Version : Now that the power ratings have been revised...
ZoomZoomH 08-22-2003, 07:55 PM how long do you think would it take before dealers are willing to sell it for UNDER MSRP???
I'd say this announcement may just accelerate the discounting process a bit, and I'll be able to get an RX-8 w/ Sport Pkg for around 27.5k in about, oh i don't know, 3 months??? :D
Murgen 08-22-2003, 08:10 PM Yeah, I think it lends some incentive to dealers to cut the price a bit to overcome this PR problem (I won't say nightmare). I would definitely use it to my advantage in negotiations.
Personally, I think Mazda marketing figured 250hp sounded a lot sexier than 238hp. They figured a couple of disgruntled early adopters was worth the price to get the RX-8 talked about as a S2000/350z beater. With a few mods it might. But, all those S2000/350zs are getting modded too. :p
Hercules 08-22-2003, 08:24 PM Meh... it's marginal. The car is still as fast as C&D and others tested it, it's just missing a 'number' from its portfolio of traits. Big deal.
The people that give it up weren't interested in the RX-8... they were interested in the IMAGE of the RX-8. If it's not 250 horsepower and running with <insert car here> then it's not worth owning.
Let me say it now... the Honda Accord V6 is now rated at higher horsepower than the RX-8! *evil laugh*
:D
ToRX-8orToZ 08-22-2003, 09:02 PM As far as I know, the car has been selling under MSRP for a while now... assuming you are willing to buy one of the more common packages (GT). My dealer was willing to sell a black GT, or a silver GT to me for 1K over invoice two weeks ago.

Why the evil laugh? The accord V6 mated with the MT is actualy a "fairly" quick car.
pelucidor 08-22-2003, 11:25 PM BMW have managed to sell cars with a lot less HP than competitors (e.g. 330i vs Acura TL-S or G35 Sedan) because the performance is in the same ballpark.
If (and it is a fairly big IF) the RX-8 performance is CONSISTENTLY as promised (0-60mph in 6secs or less, 1/4 mile in 14.5 or less for most magazine reviews of PRODUCTION cars) then I don't think people will remember this HP fiasco a year from now.

I don't know how you guys negotiate or where you shop but I could have bought one 2 weeks ago for under MSRP.
ZoomZoomH 08-22-2003, 11:45 PM well i live in northern VA, sort of a Mazda hotbed, and so far all the dealers here (all 6 of them) are still holding at sticker for their RX-8s...
and i STILL haven't seen one staying on the lot for more than 3 days that's NOT a pre-order...
ZoomZoomH 08-22-2003, 11:47 PM i'd bet you don't live in an area where there's a big number of Mazda buyers, northern VA just happens to be one of them.
I can hand count 6 dealers within a 20 mile radius, and more if i include the whole metro DC area :)
Skyline Maniac 08-22-2003, 11:48 PM Eh~ both US Accord Coupe MT and Nissan Altima MT have been tested to go 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds. (forgot which magazines, but it's there) Now those two cars both weight a lot more than the RX-8, have junky tires and are FWD grocery getters. I don't think the RX-8 has 238hp in this case. Straight line is not the strength of the RX-8, especually if you take the 8000rpm launch into consideration. Let's stick to the AutoX and mountain driving fun~

Just got a letter from my Mazda salesman telling me 1 of the 4 I looked at 2 weeks ago was sold but the other 3 and a few others that have arrived are ready for a new home.
I will admot though, Milwaukee isn't exactly a hotbed for Mazda and certainly not for RWD import sportscars.

They are full of crap and trying to drive the prices up, it's common with new car models. The Evo 8 is a perfect example, dealers were trying to charge a premium but Mitsubishi will make as many of those cars as people are willing to buy, it's not limited at all.
