View Full Version : Rear ended - SUV - 1, RX-8 - 0
coldrink 08-20-2003, 01:19 PM Well Folks, I picked up my pre-ordered rx-8 in July, enjoyed it for a few weeks, and was rear ended last week. Oh the agony. Here's a link with some pictures -

omg man...that SUCKS! but you know that already...well nothing left to really say but get it fixed and hopefully you'll be back on the road soon...at least it wasn't the front end or it would probably be totalled...
btw, any whiplash?
Hercules 08-20-2003, 01:25 PM :(
It looks like my baby. I feel your pain.
coldrink 08-20-2003, 01:25 PM No whiplash or injuries, although I might have felt like inflicting a few when it happened!
mikeb 08-20-2003, 01:49 PM bad bad bad bad
tribal azn2 08-20-2003, 01:50 PM stupid suv drivers:mad: . so whats going on with the insurance? did the guy take blame for it?
OmegaBob 08-20-2003, 01:56 PM OMG! That really and truely sux! I hope you're OK!
Grrrr! SUVs!!!!!!
Quick_lude 08-20-2003, 01:58 PM How fast was the SUV going? Curious how well the 8 holds up to impact.. if that was a 10mph collision.. then
swift21 08-20-2003, 01:59 PM Damn that sucks!! at least you are ok!!!
seikx8 08-20-2003, 02:05 PM Ouch! For the look of it, I would estimate the SUV must be going quite fast >25 mph. I got rear end once on my corolla wagon by a jeep going probably 30 to 40 and it didn't look that bad.
Good thing that no one get any major injury, car you can always replace and life is precious :) Hope you get your ride back soon.
P00Man 08-20-2003, 02:09 PM wow, thats pretty shitty man...
________
MEDICAL MARIJUANA STATES (http://mmjp.org)
coldrink 08-20-2003, 02:13 PM The SUV was not going fast, as we were in bumper to bumper traffic, probably 10mph or less. But he did not really hit my bumper, he hit the rear trunk nack and lid, so the bumper did not take the impact as designed. I was in first gear coasting, so I went forward instead of being on my brake which probably saved having more damage done. It looks worse than it is, I think. The trunk actually still opened and closed, and the lights all still worked. That rear wall of the trunk is really made of nothing, so it crushed right in.
I was pulled over driving home though, the officer thought I had removed my rear plate, until he pulled me over and got a look at the car. He gave me his condolences. I've actually been pulled over twice by officers directing traffic so they could ask about the car (pre accident) - talk about attention you don't really want!
Elara 08-20-2003, 02:22 PM Your poor car! At least it's fixable.
You've got my sympathies- I probably would have jumped out and tried to hurt someone- kudos for being so calm.
eskimo 08-20-2003, 02:25 PM I'm sick. Mine's black too. Pix like this make me nervous.
As a small bit of consolation,

I know, a Jeep instead of an Explorer, but at least no one was hurt.
Mockngbrd 08-20-2003, 10:33 PM oh.... that sux.....
hope it gets repaired soon....
damn those lousy drivers... (esp. those in big suvs)
i drive my dad's dinky KIA suv too though.... never had an accident.... (but manged to drift it a few times in the wet.... ehehehe.... FR layout's fun)
IGOZMZM 08-20-2003, 10:47 PM You should be able to get more than just the cost of the repairs out of them or their insurance company. I've heard that, depending on how new the car is, you can get the money value difference between what it's worth before wrecked and after wrecked. You might have to sue to get that money though.
Genom 08-21-2003, 01:40 PM I shudder to think that could have been my car on the very day I picked it up if it had been an SUV that hit me and not an Accord. Fortunatly the Accord did no damage, but look at your baby! Thats just sinful. The other driver better be paying for a few painkillers from having to see your 8 like that.
coldrink 08-21-2003, 02:27 PM I guess I'm a softie, the insurance co just agreed to pay for a rental mb c240 while my car is in the shop, so I'm just going to hope for the best and see how the rx looks and feels when they are done with the work...I just want my baby back! Thanks for all the kind words, sharing the pain has decreased it...
khoney 08-21-2003, 07:21 PM Sorry about the car, man. It makes me sick to see it, and it's not even mine. I'm paranoid about that myself - when I'm in that kind of traffic, I always leave about 50 feet in front of me and keep my eye in the rearview mirror for idiots like that - I've avoided a rear-end on a number of occasions by bumping the gas if someone's approaching too fast. Also, the drivers behind me pays more attention, because they're usually pissed off at me for keeping them 50 feet farther away from their destination :D Some people just don't belong behind the wheel. I'm convinced that some jerks even intentionally try to scare you when they see you have a new car. I've had people jerk the wheel suddenly when they're beside me as if they're coming into my lane.
Well, at least you enjoyed a Tull concert that night! I've seen them a couple of times in the past decade - they're definitely one of my 'desert island' groups. Nice to know you have great taste in cars AND music.
Hope your baby gets fixed as good as new.
RX-Nut 08-21-2003, 07:30 PM HOLY FREHOLEY.. and here I was crying about my baby @$$ dent. Dang dude, I feel ya..
I sincerely hope she comes back to you AOK. And thank the lucky ones you came out unscathed, physically at least. :(
We're pulling for ya..
Renesis08 08-22-2003, 01:49 AM Hopefully you get it repaired w/o owner expenses on top of insurance as well as loss of vehicle damage since it's at the shop. I fell your pain :(. At least it wasn't a total loss.
desmo996 08-22-2003, 01:55 PM That is one of my greatest fears and the reason why I drive like an ass. People pay attention when you start cutting them off and hitting the brakes hard. They respect your distance a little better. I rather get the finger than getting rear ended. The technique has worked for 15 years now.
wakeech 08-22-2003, 02:06 PM my condolences.
...i just wanted to point out my observation that, although it was luckily a very minor impact, and your car was able to roll forward and absorb some of the energy as motion, the crushed bits of the car don't look very extensive... the tail lights, boot lid and rear valence panel (thing above the plastic bumper that wraps around) seem to be the only things damaged... am i correct in what i see that the rear quarter panels were unscathed??
sucky, but could have been worse. glad your neck is ok. :)

...are you serious??
RX-Nut 08-22-2003, 02:31 PM That pic reminded me of my wife's 92 Celica. A minivan slammed into it just like that. Caved in the whole trunk, groceries and all. It was a bit deeper than yours, and we ended up losing the car because the repair shop deemed the chassis was tweaked.
You might want to make sure that the chassis/frame isn't bent or warped. If it is, the car will continue to give you problems. We got a settlement from our insurance and ended up getting a new car. Of course we lost a bit of $ because of the whole ordeal.
Hat's off to the Celica though.. it crumpled just as it was designed I'm sure, since my wife walked away unscathed. (thanks me lucky stars).
frogzapper 08-22-2003, 02:48 PM I just want to add my condolences for your baby's pain! :( Mine is black too, so it really hurts to see that! I admire the fact that you seem to be keeping a calm, positive attitude about the whole thing -- I know I'd be completely bummed! And it would only increase my already negative feelings towards all the darn SUVs on the road these days --- grrrr! ( hope I don't offend any SUV drivers on the forum). Hope you get her back good as new!

Correct! My son had an accident in '99 and this worked for me. I was coached by an insurance claims friend of mine when I wrote this. They are used to this, you won't be the only one ever to submit one of these!
It also had a lot more due to injuries - medical facility emergency room charges, doctor visit charges, mileage to and from every medical visit, pain & suffering, punitive damages due to the accident being a hit-&-run. I took all that out cuz it doesn't seem to apply to yours, except, you didn't get a quick checkup that night?
Final claim for settlement of accident:
Owner/insurance holder:
(Insurance Co.) policy no.:
Vehicle: 2004 Mazda RX-8
Driver:
Date of accident: 08-??-03 (11:30 p.m.)
Current status of claim settlement:
The following is still in need of settlement:
Medical Center Emergency Room visit 08-??-03:
Facility Charge =
Radiology =
Round-trip mileage = 29 miles
Depreciation of vehicle:
This was the first accident for this vehicle.
Requesting depreciation compensation in the amount of $500.00
Loss of use of vehicle:
This car was not useable from 08-??-03 thru and including ??-??-03.
?? days @ $35.00 per day =
Please respond ASAP. Thank you.
Sincerely,
coldrink 08-22-2003, 04:29 PM Hey wakeech and rx-nut,
You folks are correct, according to the guy at the shop, the "rails" (which I guess are considered the frame and chassis) were untouched and the rear quarter panels were almost completely unscathed, thank goodness, just a bit of paint damage to one corner of one panel from the trunk lid. Well, maybe a tiny tweek at the edge of that panel...
Hey Racer X-8,
Thanks very much for the info! I'm going to keep that form letter for reference, but I'm not up to going after the insurance co at the moment. I know my car is now totally screwed in terms of resale, but right now my mind is in the following place - "live hard/live well/don't want to deal/not gonna sweat it". Of course, I might feel differently once the work is done and I have it back!!!

Spiralling insurance rates & all.
Having said that, I'm not sure if the $500 amount is quite enough.:D
I can't believe this has happened to you. Jethro Tull is definitely not suited for the drinking class. Maybe sombody should have told that SUV driver.
