This might be a stupid question, so please don't laugh.... ;)

Why is it that some people blur/block out their license plate numbers in pics? Is it for privacy, legal issues or some other reason? Like, what's the difference in seeing a plate in a pic or seeing it in person? Either way, I still know the number, right?

Also, it seems like people with personalized plates don't mind posting pics with their plates as opposed to some people with standard plates.

btw - I'm not referring to our fellow Japanese members who blur out plates & people for privacy/cultural reasons.

One reason why i would is because if your car is very nicely built. There may be someone who likes your car a little too much and if they have a bud in DMV or there are other resources online they might find your address then its just a matter of time.

Gotcha! That makes sense.

Also, here is another example. I once posted a photo of my car next to the Cliffords' car. My plate is personalized with my nick so people might recognize me. Thus, I don't mind displaying it. However, I did not know how the Cliffords felt about it, so I blurred out their plate so as not to violate THEIR privacy without permission.

Thanks B-nez, I probably wouldn't have done the same for you out of sheer ignorance. Ignorance to not realize that posting your license plate would have been violating your privacy, and ignorance that I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to blurr it out if I wanted to. I feel extraordinarily dumb this morning, but enlightened. I think I'll dable with photo shop today.

I was wondering the same thing while watching "While You Were Out" last night on TLC.

For those who don't know, in this show a crew of carpenters/designers remodel a room is someone's house without their knowledge with the help of a family member.

Anyway, during the course of the show they give the first and last name of the people invloved, show pictures of their house and give the city/state in which they live. Yet when they show the unsuspecting family member driving away on hidden camera, they blur out the license plate.
