View Full Version : Not having problems with my 8

New Yorker

Starting it up this morning, I noticed that my 8 didn't flood. In fact, now that I think about it, it never has. On the road, the "check engine" light never came on. And whenever I shifted (MT), the shift lever easily went into whatever gear I chose. (For example, if I was upshifting from 3rd to 4th, the shift lever would slide easily out of 3rd and into 4th gear.)

Is anyone else experiencing this?

yes a lot of us do not have problems.

it's just that only the people with problems make a thread concerning it. that's what leads trolls to venture out and say the rx-8 isn't reliable.

Only problem I've had is flooding once when I first got her. Backed it out of the garage when it had been off for 24 hours, and turned it off after about 5 seconds. It was also about 40 degrees outside. So besides that, everything is fine. Runs great!!

Nice post!

I'm at 14000 kms, and I once had a rattle that lasted about 1000kms, and went away on its own. Other than brake noise, the car has amazed me...this coming from a guy who finds fault in everything!

31,000 miles, mostly problem free.

- Flooded once, but I got the upgraded starter and batt, so ultimately I don't mind the invonvience.

- Headlights replaced for film. New ones are starting to get film on them. anyone know if there is a 12k mile limit for headlight replacement or if it's the full 48k?

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head...

Every day for 24,000+ miles. However, I am experiencing these conditions:

- Occasionally at stoplights, someone will roll down their window and motion for me to do the same, and I will hear them say "Nice car!" or "Wow, that's cool, what is that?".

- If I take it for a long spirited drive, I notice that my cheek muscles ache from smiling for an hour straight.

- I find that I am often unable to shift the transmission unless the engine has been wound to the redline by means of wide open throttle and I hear the rev-warning "beep".

- After washing and waxing it and parking it in the sun, I find that I am unable to leave it alone in the garage, and instead find that the only suitable remedy is to set up a lawn chair at a suitable viewing angle, put some classic rock on my garage stereo (a feature every suitable garage should have, I might add), and drink a beer while admiring the shine.

But, I find I can deal with those issues - afterall, it is a sports car.

I have now put 5600 miles on my beautiful 2005 six-speed. Winning Blue.

I am sorry to have to tell you guys this, but . . .

I got a great deal on the purchase and financing.I am satisfied with its fuel economy (16 to 23 MPG depending on driving conditions and style).
I check the oil regularly, and add a quart between changes -- I keep two quarts of Mazda 5W-20 and some clean rags in a plastic bag in the trunk. I enjoy this as it gives me an excuse to open the hood admire the mechanicals.
I don't consider the car "slow".
There is plenty of interior space for me, my girlfriend, 2 kids, and all our "stuff".
Not once has the engine flooded or otherwise failed to instantly and easily start.
The car has never knocked, rattled, or made any other bad noises. Every sound it makes is music to my ears, even the Bose with .mp3 player.
Yes, the car has been back to the dealer three times: Three oil changes and a tire rotation.

I could go on, but I will just say that owning and driving my RX-8 is the second greatest pleasure in my life. The worst thing that has happened with this car was when I put a dent in the trunk lid by slamming it shut with my elbow after lifting four large bags of groceries out of the (spacious) trunk -- d'oh. Paintless dent repair made that dent, plus two small door dings, vanish without a trace for $160.

Make this sucker a sticky, so the newbs don't have to post the "Is it reliable......." question?

23,000 miles, a little over a year, no CELs, no misfires, no floods, no hard starts, no problems.. even the center console is behaving.

I did have the driver's side visor go ker-blammo, replaced under warranty.

I do have two very minor rattles.. with time, I'll fix 'em myself. I allready know where they are and what they are. They only show up in temps of 75*F or lower.

30k miles and unfortunately I can not find a rattle. I turned the stereo off yesterday on the highway looking for one but nothing. I might take some bolts out so it rattles. Not sure yet.

Oh, I just recently drove to Vegas and keeping it above 70 for most of the trip got a measly 21mpg. Boo.

Oh, I just recently drove to Vegas and keeping it above 70 for most of the trip got a measly 21mpg. Boo.

Right around Memorial Day weekend, I did two driving trips with my RX-8 - one unplanned out to Iowa and back (700 miles round trip) to the funeral of a family friend (nothing like having a bright yellow sports car in a funeral procession!), and then onwards on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to Indy for the 500 (400 miles round trip.

For that 1100 miles, i burned 62 gallons of unleaded premium which is right around 18 mpg, my typical crusing speed was between 82 and 88 mph indicated, depending on traffic, which is a true speed (per my GPS) of 79 to 84 mph. That's perfectly fine in my book.

And that is serious fun cruising at that speed!

On the Indy run, going there I got hooked up with a "pack" of performance cars and we ran at 100 mph+ down the left lane - I abandoned that idea when we started bunching up on traffic and it got a little too "Talladega" for me, but hung with them for a good 25 miles, which went by in only 15 minutes!

OK, I posted my humorous post, seriously the only issues I have with my RX-8 is a slightly-out-of-round wheel which I need to replace one of these days - Mazda won't warranty it as they say it's road damage, which, I agree with as it wasn't that way at delivery - I'll pick up a used one here on the WTB/WTS forum, and a driver seat that creaks in cold weather. I can live with that one - not a big deal. The car completely rocks otherwise. It's never flooded once, I used to have issues with long crank times, but the dealer replaced the battery with the high-juice version and that problem is now long gone too. Lot it!

14,386 miles and only 4 complaints:

I have been waking up on time and can't seem to miss a day's commute to work!
I have even been taking the long way home through one of the curviest 2 lane mountain roads in my area.
People look at me as if I were piloting a UFO.
As Stew similarly commented, I cannot seem to let dirt sit on the car, so I wash it daily and spend extended periods of time looking at it at as many angles as possible.

'04 with 42,000 miles and NO flood. Have had misfire CEL and got spark plugs replaced with no questions asked. Have had a few interior plastic items replaced (just cause I am picky and she is my perfect baby). Definitely visit the dealership every couple of months (oil changes, etc).

Love this car, would not trade for anything.

Only 2500 miles on my silver 05 GT 6-speed, but not a single rattle, squeek, or problem. Engine is smooth as silk, brakes are impressive, shifting is easy and fun, handling puts an enormous grin on my face, rear seats have proven very useful. This car looks super cool and creates an incredibly smoooooth driving experience. Oh, and women check me out more, too. :)

I've used my RX-8 as a daily driver since last September. Was perfectly happy with it all winter on the Blizzacks and I'm even happier now that it's back on the summer tires.

It starts up every single day and with the exception of needing a new cat early on I've never had doubts about getting to work or getting a lot of envious stares around town. :)

'04, MT, Winning Blue, 16K miles

No problems, still drives and rides great, no rattles or unusual noises, original tires still have LOTS of wear left, no CELs or other error lights, clutch, brakes, electronics all working flawlessly, and getting acceptable gas mileage (17/23). The radio works great, the back seats hold spare folks for the 'Lets get some ice cream' road trips!

And about those rear doors.... Some folks think they are a wierd idea? I LIKE them. So does Toyota, since they used the same design on their new FJ! They work great!

Recently took car in for standard service and oil change, mentioned a no start condition to the service techs that my wife had told me about (which my wife then told me after the fact :) was because she was adjusting her seat at a stop sign, slid back, killed the engine, and then tried to start it without engaging the clutch: driver induced safety-related no-start), and the intermittent brake squeal which I can't hear anyway because it is above my audible range, and that I had a non-start condition once in my driveway once due to driver error, probably SLIGHTLY flooded, but was able to get it started after a half-hour wait time. Mazda replaced starter, plugs, and battery, turned the front brake rotors and replaced the pads, all under warranty! WHOA! ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM! This thing now starts like a champion ready to run!

Also having the problems where I am just not able to wash it as many times as I want to, and for an inexpensive car, it gets more positive comments than any Corvette or Ferrari I have ever driven!

Last problem I am having is not finding nearly enough twisty roads in Jacksonville Florida. BUT, I think I found a temporary solution to that: We have TONS of new neighborhoods being built, where they create the roads MONTHS before they start selling/building houses. Empty, twisty, hard turns, zero traffic, non-public roads with fresh asphalt!!! Basically go-kart tracks with no other people on them. WHOO HOO! :ylsuper:

I LOVE THIS CAR!

Today begins week 2 with my 8 and my biggest problem is that I occasionally am forced to get out of it for things like work and sleep etc. But just so no one gets the idea that I'm totally easy to please, I'll bitch about the one annoying thing I've found. You can't put anything on the front passengers seat next to you (change, CDs, papers etc) without it immediately ending up on the floor behind the seat. Searching for your "vanishing" CDs while reaching over the console into the back seat passenger floor is a real trick at 75 mph! And yeah I know.....I'll stop putting my shit on the passenger seat! ;-)

I hope I hit some of the high K numbers w/o problems. 4k on mine, no problems except the "sports car" related ones described by Stew. Otherwise, my only real issue is that the state troopers here in RI absolutely LOVE hanging out on one highway stretch of my daily commute. My car used to be perfect, and I used to occasionally post these "in case anyone was wondering, my car is just fine, no need for thanks, glad I could help" posts. But now they aren't funny, not funny at all. I am abso-fricking-lutely furious that a 1 cm by .5 cm spot of paint has now rubbed off of the shifter knob, in plain view of anyone sitting in the passenger seat, RRRrrrRR! THEN, a fricken grommet that holds the plastic engine cover fell off somewhere. Thank GOD the dealer noticed it at an oil change and replaced it under warranty. Damn engine cover could have rattled loose, fell in the pulleys and, well sh*t, the whole engine could have exploded! I really worry about the engine exploding now because it's so close to the cabin, I mean, what if it explodes??? It's two feet from my knee, three and a half feet from my man-parts! I ain't lookin' to have my car make knee and man-part hamburger on the interstate!! And GET THIS- 31000 miles, and I had to buy new WINDSHIELD WIPERS. Who the f*ck designed this car anyway??

Actually, that may not work for you either. After I got the car back I only had a couple of incidental problems (tail light moisture and noisy brakes fixed - occassional airbag light not fixed). However, 10,000 miles after the accident, driving it almost 7 days/week for 7 months I really can't complain. It runs strong, looks great and handles like a dream.

i just went over 43k yesterday i drove from san diego to ft irwin a little over 200 miles i have never had so much fun driving.

as for gas mileage i had half a tank when i left which was all downtown san diego stop and go driving and i like to rev it hard when i take off i was very pleased to see i was getting 16.5 mpg only 1/3 of it being highway. when i filled up on my way home i was pleasantly surprised to see 20mpg this just makes me love the car even more.

the road to ft irwin SUCKS its not fully paved and as i was driving to the base i heard a rock hit the side of my car made me cringe but when i got out to inspect after i got to my destination there wasnt a single mark on the car.

on my way home was worse when i got to that road it was smooth at first but i knew it was going to get rough and i had 3 18 wheelers in front of me so i was trying to get in front of them before the rough part so i didnt get rocks thrown all over me i only got past 2 of them and then traffic started coming and the rough road oh god i wanted to cry when i heard and saw what came next. but once again when i got home and this morning since it was dark when i got home i was very surprised to see all my paint intact and no dings. needless to say i will never drive on that road again but it was a problem free drive with lots of looks and people telling me nice car =D.
