Type of Event: HPDE (High Performance Driving Event), not a race. This is a track day open to drivers of all skill-levels and car types for practice. Grip and Drift drivers will be in separate run groups!

We disdainfully regret to inform all of the Race / Drift enthusiasts that we will be taking a break and cancelling all of the track dates scheduled for the 2006 season. Due to complaints from Charlie at JustDrift to Willow Springs for allowing another organization to put on drift events, Willow Springs denied usage of their tracks for drifting, and we will not be holding any events until 2007. We apologize for the invonvienence and hope that you all can have fun at the available non-SRT track days and keep it off the streets.

Drifting is not a sport.

No matter what they say drifting is not a sport.

 

California Speedway and Qualcomm Stadium have placed a ban on all drifiting events.... Could be some of these places don't want the liablity.

Now, I've only watched a couple drift day practices, but from those it would seem as though the best categorization of drifting would fall under "sanctioned stupidity"


Biggest problem with the dorifto crowd: Too high a Dumb@ss ratio.

 

I don't have a problem with it, I know a few pros and have some autox buddies that do it also. It has its place and its to bad that some of the people putting these events on are messing things up by not taking some very basic safety precautions, Qualcomm banning events was a direct result of a group that was not safe or good neighbors.
Give it a week and it will get worse, once F&F3 is out you will see some dumb @ss on the news after they try stuff they saw in the movie on a public road. If people want to be able to keep holding these events they need to tighten up on safety and stick with responsible organizations.

p.s. I am not in any way saying the SRT guys were not safe, sounds like they got screwed by another group, but if these groups cant get along they will all be out on there @sses.

 

That's a little harsh. Drifting has its place, usually as an exhibition filler for real motorsports events. I think its fun to watch, fun to do (under safe, controlled circumstances) but I wouldn't catagorize it as a sport either.

Drifting is to auto racing as freestyle moto-x is to motocross. Its a fun exhibition offshoot of a sport, but not a serious sport in and of itself.

Back OT - I think a sanctioned drifting event on a track where novices can just show up and participate is asking for trouble. It is inherently more dangerous than a HPDE and requires much more experience in the driver to be done in a manner that could even begin to be called "safe".

I certainly believe that a sliding car is not necessarily an out of control car. However, when novices are involved and with multiple cars on-track, there would be a lot of situations where people would be losing control.

The danger is because in an HPDE, students are free to approach the limits of adhesion gradually and slowly build up their confidence level and car control skills. In order for you to actually "drift" you have to go right beyond that limit, its an all or nothing situation. I don't see how that can be done safetly in an HPDE-like format.
