I'm looking at purchasing a mazdaspeed shift knob, but the pain doesn't feel like it's worth $100. anybody have any suggestions (aside from not parking the car outside)? I'm thinking of looking for a baby-sized ankle sock from like fubu or ecko, but that may just be too ghetto...

use the sock and take if off when u start to drive?

Try a windshield sunscreen. Makes a big difference in inside temp. Saves the upholstery, dash etc. in the long run too.

Or get some cool driving gloves! :nono:

I know this sounds ugly (and it is kinda), but I keep a small piece of reynold's wrap in my glove box. When I park here in NC for any length of time, I simply rubberband it onto the shift knob, shiny side up. Not the prettiest solution, but it gets the job done. Does anyone know if tinting helps this?

An iPod sock is exactly the right size for the shifter and has a bit more class than a baby sock. The winshield screen helps a lot, though during the summer here in Phoenix it can still be undriveable without the sock, too.

That helps too, so does good window tint. Get a shade for your front windshield and you should be set.

hm im not sure usually the sun gets throught my front window so i wouldnt know (cuz obviously i dont sit in the back) but my tints turns my car into a sauna... i sat down yesterday in my car and the back of my shirt slid up the tinest bit, touched the leather and i JUMPED off.. it was painful...

Get a shade for the front and good QUALITY tint for the sides and back and your good to go. Mine sits in the direct Florida sunshine all day while I'm at the office. Never had a problem with hot leather seats or shifter knob.

i've blistered my hand before after the car sat in the sun for 9 hours...it's like like having your partner beat you during sex..not that im into that, but i do like when my 8 bites me back

Yes window tinting does help.

Sleeper, do you a BB w black interior? I did notice mine getting hella hot too. Tint your windows even if you go with 50%, which is the lightest, that should block out over 90% of UV rays. That and use a windowscreen/shade make a huge difference.

Here's a thought—get driving gloves, and even if you don't like wearing 'em, pull one over the shift knob when you park. Like a sock, but way cooler. (Or just drape one over the top. Very James Bond.)

Yeah, if I ever wore driving gloves, I think I would never hear the end of it from my friends. Sitting in ATL traffic ususally does not require gloves.

Anyways, I have black on black interior with a black exterior and my car sat in the sun for 8.5 hours while I was at work all this week. It is hot, but I have 20% tint and it works pretty good keeping the car cool I guess. The seats and shifter are hot (I just suck it up...cannot imagine buying something because the shifter is too hot... I mean cry me a river), but once you turn the A/C on for all of 3 minutes everything cools down, it's like it was never in the sun. Amazing how that works.

Why do you run with your lights on all the time?

Well just do what I do here in Texas.....simply after your done driving unscrew the shift knob and place it in your glove compartment....then when you get in a day later or whatever take it out and screw it on....its also a great theft deterent :rock:

yeah this is a problem if you have an aftermarket shift knob that's made out of titanium or some other solid metal, and in direct sun for 7-9 hours, its a fucking bitch i dont care how manly some of you say you are, i dare you to put your hand over my shift knob for a few seconds after i park it in the sun for an extended period of time, its gotten hot enough to blister my skin before, so i have to shift super extra quick for the first few minutes untill it cools down.

If it gets that hot try this.
1. Tint windows.
2. Park in shade.
3. Close Sunroof.
4. Install windshield sunscreen.
5. Install ipod sock.
6. Install baby sock.
7. Wrap in tin foil.
8. Remove & put in glove box.

When returnig to car, reverse order, don driving gloves & haul ass.

FYI. I live in Florida, I've had 2 Jeep Wranglers (usually no top) w/ a Hust shifter handle that got hotter than hell in the summer. Instead of doing some of the more rediculous things that are listed here, I used to cover my shifter w/ one of the most manly things I know.....A F*@#ING BALL CAP. :uh: Hell, at least use an old Crown Royal Bag! Peace!!

I bought one with my Voodoo Aluminum knob. I have my windows tinted, and use my sunshade all the time, and that damn thing still burns my hand. and I do NOT enjoy that type of thing. The knob glove as it is called, will look better than a sock or aluminum foil or some other ghetto solution, and when the knob is cooled off, or in the winter warmed up, you can take it off and store it. you can get them at:

If you are holding your shifter long enough to burn your self you are holding it to long. NEVER REST YOUR HAND ON THE SHIFTER, this puts pressure on the tranny's syncos and slowly distroys them.
