RENESIS_NEENJA 05-03-2006, 05:01 PM I need your help please,
hate to do this but I'm outta ideas....
Ok.. I got this message saying OMG!! your infected with spyware omgwtfbbq!! download our program to fix it!, hmm.... problem is this shit happened a year ago or whatever and I downloaded their shit program, paid for their shit program and seemingly everything has been fine.. till last night.
No big deal I thought I'll just run my nifty spyware remover!! so I run it.. restart, thinking everything ok.. but it isn't for some reason my desktop seems to be disabled, and by that I mean all my icons and files are there, but the desktop background is gone, I can't change anything like my screensaver or resolution or anything.. to top it off after all this I can't turn my firewall on, which I don't understand becasue it was on in the first place so I'm not sure why I'm having this problem to begin with  and my norton anti-virus won't stay on either... ohh and when I get on the internet it takes me to a page telling me some remote desktop has got complete control over my system.. blahblahblah, come download our spyware killer to fix it!... bastards.. damn "Internet Exploder" damn yous to hell!! I've tried to restore my system to an earlier date, does't seem to work.....
so... any ideas!?
Where should I start first!?
Sorry Guys.. any help would be greatly appreciated.
nzarnow 05-03-2006, 05:07 PM In an attempt not to sound rude: why the hell did you download, install, and PAY for a program that obviously was a scam?
Here is what you will probably end up doing. Back up all of your work. That only includes what you MUST keep. Don't store things that are easily replaced. Put it all on CD's or DVD's. Then re-install windows. You have a virus and spyware up the butt. The only way to get rid of it is to wipe everything and start over.
Out of curiosity, did it really say "omg!! your infected with spyware omgwtfbbq!!"? With the omg and stuff included? Should have been your first clue to get rid of it.

you've been duped. never click on any of those type of msg's. just close them. its like click yes to "DO YOU WANT TO INSTALL THIS PROGRAM WE CLAIM WILL FIX YOUR COMPUTER WHEN IT WILL REALLY MESSES IT UP SO WE CAN FORCE YOU TO BUY OUR OTHER PROGRAM TO FIX IT?" there may be ways to fix it, but chances are that it will not be worth your time and money. i say back you important files and bookmarks up and format that sucka. sorry to hear bout ur probs.

haha no it didn't really say that.. I think I would known something was wrong.. and I have no excuse.. I was silly, made a stupid mistake just trying to "fix it a quickly as possible...obviously and now I'm paying for it...sonsofbitches...
Thanks for your help!
RENESIS_NEENJA 05-03-2006, 05:16 PM Haha. Thanks Mike....
nzarnow 05-03-2006, 05:45 PM Yea, backup your stuff then re-install. Good luck. I have re-installed way too many times...
unpocoloco 05-03-2006, 07:37 PM I helped a friend out with a similar problem. I forget exactly how I fixed it, unfortunately, but if I had to guess, step #1 was to write down EXACTLY what the program says. Then do a google search with that as your phrase. If nothing promising shows up, try throwing in other keywords like "remove."
Keep us posted!
chr1s 05-03-2006, 09:37 PM Try booting into safe mode and uninstalling that retarded program. Then get a decent program likeLavasoft Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/). It's free. I also use Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01) program, also free and updates every friday.
Then look at the services and programs running on your machine (right click my computer, go to manage, then click the services tab). You'll have to look very carefully because the names are usually like this:
Workstation - GOOD
Workstatoin - BAD
Also in the task manager under the processes tab you'll see stuff like this:
rundll32.exe - GOOD
rundlll32.exe - BAD
If you come across any processes that don't look like they should belong a simple google search of the process/service name will tell you if it's legit. Most of those sites also come with instructions on how to remove malicious processes.
You can also try running system restore. Not sure if you have that enabled or if it's got a decent screenshot of your HD, but it's worth a try when all else fails.
mike0615 05-03-2006, 09:47 PM u might have a chance, go to www.microsoft.com and go to the download section. download and install there spyware remover, its the best out there cuz its from MS themself. it usually restores everything back even after the spyware hijacks all the features that let u fix the problem. if this doesn't fix it, nothing will, u then have to format and reinstall. good luck, i'll cross my fingers for ya... but not too long, cuz i have arthitis. :fingersx:

Here's the deal chico...
You're infected with a rootkit. I'm not sure which one. They are a bitch to get rid of. You're going to need a spyware remover, either Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor. If you can, boot in safe mode with networking, install, update, and clean.
Antivirus programs aren't going to clean something of this magnitude. It might get the trojan cleaned up, but this kits have hooks that reinstall the missing components and antivirus programs won't fix your desktop.
If you need further assistance or have anymore questions IM me on AIM or Yahoo, DeusShinD
Luftwaffle 05-03-2006, 10:44 PM I think I had a post in here somewhere a while ago about some nasty spyware I got that wasn't coming up as a virus and it basically took a reinstall to get rid of it. Lemme see if I can find the post.

ohh and WOOT for all the Texas people in this thread!!
(and the Florida, Cali people too!)
RENESIS_NEENJA 05-03-2006, 10:59 PM yeah lufty thanks... thats looking and sounding very similar..and the first time this happened(when I bought their damn "magic" program) was around the same time you posted that thread.....
MadRonin 05-03-2006, 11:30 PM Normally I hate to tell someone this but just backup everything important and then wipe and re-install your OS. I've been getting so many calls about this lately that I'm swamped with extra work. It's good for me, but a little old, none the less.
Once your system is up and running with a fresh copy of Windows do the following to ensure a relatively safe system:
1) Ditch Internet Explorer - Download Firefox or Opera, but stop using IE. Use the adblock extension.
2) Install the free version of AVG Anti-Virus - As good as Norton and none of the added bullshit.
3) Get behind a router that uses NAT and SPI and install a software firewall like Zone Alarm.
4) Download and install Spyware Blaster - Make sure you update it right away and enable all protection.
5) Download and install Spybot Search and Destroy - Download all the updates, immunize, and scan your system.
6) Don't click on ads or pop-ups (you will get next to none from Firefox). ONLY click on links that you know where they go.
Like I said above, I get calls for this all the time. I use the above to keep the problem from re-occuring after I've cleaned or wiped their system. None of my customers have ever had a problem afterwards. The repeat business may not be high, but referals from satisfied customers are always forthcoming. ;)
One other thing - In the case of Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search and Destroy, it's necessary that you keep them up to date. I recommend checking for updates every two weeks and scanning or re-fortifying your system at the same time.
Luftwaffle 05-04-2006, 07:32 AM ^^^ What the samurai said.
Also, for Firefox, you should install Script Blocker. It's one of the most downloaded extensions, so it's pretty easy to find. I just block all scripts from everywhere except on a certain few sites. You can also temporarily allow scripts which only applies to that instance of Firefox. After you close out FF, temporarily allowed scripts are automatically re-blocked. If you want to enable javascript permanently for say this site, just tell it to allow. There's a little S with a cancel sign over it on the bottom right of the window that you can use to quick allow or block scripts. It tells you if you're blocking all scripts or just some scripts or no scripts.
Between that and AdBlocker, I don't get any annoying popups or on screen flash ads. Often, banners slip through, but I ignore all of those things out of habit.
Aseras 05-04-2006, 07:36 AM sounds like VX2. get adaware ( http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/ ) and get the vx2 plugin ( http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml). Install adaware, then the vx2 plugin and then run the plugin.
RENESIS_NEENJA 05-04-2006, 12:58 PM Thanks Skythe, Ronin, Aseras, I'll try these things as well tonight when I have some time..
mysql101 05-04-2006, 01:07 PM Funny story.
I actually know a spammer who does exactly this.
He first spams the crap out of people using the winpop, once he's spammed an ip for a week or two, he then switches his spam to spamming for anti virus that will stop the popups. He just bought a new mercedes in cash.
RENESIS_NEENJA 05-04-2006, 08:34 PM sounds like VX2. get adaware ( http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/ ) and get the vx2 plugin ( http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml). Install adaware, then the vx2 plugin and then run the plugin.
Again, thanks to everyone for their help! I tried this and it worked wonders, everything seems to be good again.. I'm still kinda spooked about the whole situation so I'm going to format this biyatch anyway.. and then take all the advice in this thread! Soa again thanks everyone!
Skythe 05-04-2006, 09:49 PM if you need any advice about this kinda thing, don't hesitate to send me an IM or PM. I hate seeing people get caught up in this kinda thing. And as you are a member of the Brotherhood, remote services are free of charge
