View Full Version : RX-8 to be unveiled at L.A. Auto Show
AE Turbo 10-01-2002, 10:04 PM For those who have been waiting for to see the final RX-8, I've heard from a direct source that the RX-8 and a special version of the RX-8 will be unveiled at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.
Finally...
Quick_lude 10-01-2002, 10:24 PM When is that show happening? What is a direct source?

The Greater Los Angeles Auto show is open to the public on January 4th-12th 2003.
A direct source is someone that would know about these things directly and not hearsay. I read some other threads that say some people from Mazda read these forums so I won't say exactly who he works for or what he does because I could get in trouble...uh, I mean he could get in trouble.
Toadman 10-01-2002, 10:40 PM Ah yes, the North American Dog-and-Pony Auto Show in Detroit takes priority.

The Detroit Auto Show has more media days. Of course that's because the big three are there and want to push their stuff. It's understandable that the Detriot show will revolve around the Big Three.
Even though we only have two Media Days, the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show is the largest American auto show overall. The attendance to the public days are unmatched reaching 7 digit numbers.
Donny Boy 10-01-2002, 10:59 PM Do you have any info about the Mazdaspeed RX-8??
Jerome81 10-01-2002, 11:55 PM The LA autoshow always gets overlooked by everyone, including me, because about 5 days later the Detroit auto show starts. While you might be right about attandance at the LA auto show, I think if you ask just about anyone in the world what the biggest, most important auto show is, I think the overwhelming majority will say Detroit, hands down.
Thats the way I see it.
A car like the RX-8 deserves to be unleashed at the worlds best autoshow, not at some overlooked west coast show the week before. Yeah, they'll be the star at LA, but I think it should be one of the biggest stars in Detroit too, especially if they have a surprise up their sleeve ;)
To me, releasing such an important car in LA is just wussy. Heck, they even launched the 6 at Detroit last year.
The Toronto auto show fills up the sky dome and the some other huge building - size wise - I think Toronto takes the victory.
rotarynews.com 10-02-2002, 02:00 AM The FD3s was unveiled at the LA autoshow, I think it is a good idea, since most trends all seem to come from SoCal. That's why Mazda put their design studios down there, to escape drab Detriot and grey Hiroshima, and infuse some new ideas from the local LA street scene into their product line.
I bet there will be an unveiling at both, I don't know what kind of impact showing the RX-8 off a week early would have on the press in Detroit... May it will give them a chance to hear the buzz about the 8... We'll find out. I plan on covering both.
bolda48 10-02-2002, 03:11 AM I am planning on making the Detroit Auto Show. For me personally, it won't be a huge deal if the RX-8 premiers in LA, as long as I get a chance to see and touch the RX-8 in Detroit. I'll take pics as best I can, but that is still months away.
jmanolov 10-02-2002, 03:12 AM Last weekend at Sevenstock the vp said that there will be some announcements at the LA show, but the real RX-8 will be shown at the Detroit show and not in LA!!! So, don't hold your breath unless planning on a trip to Detroit

Finally...
Elara 10-02-2002, 07:22 AM Like bolda48, I'm going to Detroit and as long as I get to see and touch the RX8 in person, I'll be a happy camper. If it's actually unveiled a few days earlier, I'll live. I just want to see the darn thing!
Do you guys think it's possible that they might unveil both the RX-8 and Mazdaspeed RX-8 in January? I realize that it's being discussed in other threads, but I'm afraid to even hope that maybe they'll both be there, let alone released at the same time!
said7 10-02-2002, 07:57 AM I dont think they will unveil the mazdaspeed version. It will probably just be the final production model of the 8.
Look how long it took em to show the mazdaspeed protege.

Skydome + North and South Convention center buildings. I don't know if it's physically bigger than Detroit though, since I've never been to the Detroit one.
boowana 10-02-2002, 10:08 AM I can tell you with absolute certainty that the World Wide Launch of the RX-8 will be at the Detroit Auto Show which takes place January 11-20 with Press Days January 5th - 7th. There will be NO SHOWINGS of the final RX-8 at any other venue in the world before the Detroit unvieling. If you want to see the RX-8, go to Detroit.
Once the launch is finished at Detroit, you can expect to see it in all kinds of shows afterwards. Unfortunatley, the LA show is before Detroit.
As far as a special vehicle, I would not be looking for any special models of the RX-8 which could steal the thunder of the launch but there could be other interesting vehicles there.:D
Grimace 10-02-2002, 10:21 AM I think the "special RX-8" (if there is one) will be from the X-Men 2 movie, the one that Wolverine drives.
Elara 10-02-2002, 10:43 AM I can't believe I didn't think of that. That would make a lot more sense than having a Mazdaspeed RX8 there. I'll bet you're right Grimace.
Hercules 10-02-2002, 10:44 AM Grimace is wrong about one thing though...
Cyclops drives it :) Wolverine probably just steals it from him again hehe.
AE Turbo 10-02-2002, 02:11 PM Well argue if you want, but I'll just remember to say I told you so when the RX-8 and it's "special version" are unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show. ;)
You're right Grimace, seems more likely that the special version is the X-men RX-8. I just wasn't sure what he meant by special.
jmanolov 10-02-2002, 09:33 PM Noone argues. They will anounce some things at the LA auto show, but they won't show the car.
The RX-8 grand opening will be at Detroit and this is the place where the car will be shown for first time.
This is the plan at Mazda

jonnyspeed 10-03-2002, 10:00 AM If you go to the Mazda website and look at the RX8 page under Auto Shows, they only show listed is Detroit. They also have a map of the floor plan of the entire Mazda display. It looks like the RX8 will be up on one of those rotating displays, so I don't think we'll actually be able to touch or sit in it unfortunately...:(

zoom44 10-03-2002, 10:54 AM i think that is still up from last years show
jonnyspeed 10-03-2002, 12:37 PM Oops.. you're right. It is for the 2002 show. I actually glad! maybe they will have one on the floor for me to drool....I me sit in :)

Grimace 10-03-2002, 01:43 PM Mazda, if you're listening, please have the RX-8 at the Toronto auto show for more than one day this time...

They should have it for more than one day this time. GTA is probably one of Mazda's largest markets in N. America by far.
