hi guys, i am wondering if your RX8 vibrates alot? or it is just an nuture of Rotaries?

i have test drived 2 RX8, one 5speed and one 6 speed.

the 5 speed RX8 only vibrates at the gearnob, understandable, but quite a large shake.

the 6 speed doesnt vibrate at the gearnob (a little, ofcourse), yet, the car it self does! when i open the rear door and leave it hang opened with engine on, the door knocks noticeably at the joint. is this normal?

and does the gear makes noise when shifting?

this is my first time having the Rotary toy, so, plz help me out! cheers!

what's the difference between an Auto, a 5 speed and the 6 speed?
i mean, equipment, engine, parts?

say, if i brought an Auto or a 5 speed, is it possible to change it to a 6 speed after? swaping engine and gears only? or does the TYPE-S has other features other than better engine?(eg, better suspension, chase weight..etc)

By nature the rotary engine idles quite rough. However, when you are actually driving the pull is uniquely smooth and feels great. I can't say that vibrating that much is normal or not. Some members on the forum have changed out the transmission and differential fluids to higher quality ones and noticed that the idle vibration was less and the shifting of gears even silkier.

The auto has a torque converter and less horsepower. Personally, I'm not sure why people get the car in auto. Well, I do know why. Auto is a lot easier to drive, especially in the city and not everyone feels the need to race a nice car. Personally, I enjoy the shifting of gears. I feel more involved with the driving. I'm not sure why you would think you'd need to swap the engine if you got an auto or a 5-speed to make it a 6-speed. You'd have to replace the transmission though. Not sure why you wouldn't just get a 6-speed from the beginning since that isn't such a simple matter.

yes, i do agree with u, and i myself prefer a manual over auto bigtime.

unfortuantely, i couldn't find any goody 6speed RX-8 in Black overhere, ( i'm buying second hand btw) but saw a very good condition Auto in Black, with leather interior and a bargain price, thats why i am asking if it would be possible to make the auto into the 6speed. and what shall i change if i am doing it and costs.. etc

anyway, the "TYPE-S" is the version name of the 6 speed, so called in Japan and here (NZ)



i am very interested in buying one, but still abit worried about the idels since i'm new with rotary. wouldn't you feel unconfortable when it vibrates? or you get to used to it as a massage chair.. hrhr

The type S is the manual 6 speed, the car should idle smooth regardless of which one you get, the rotary idles rough but it should not vibrate or shake.

Haha thanks. The idling vibration doesn't really bother me. In fact, I don't seem to notice that it is vibrating much when I'm stopped. It is my first rotary car but I also got mine new. I notice the vibrations if I think about it, but that's usually it. It just feels like it wants to go So as soon as the light turns green I'll let it fly to 9k RPMs hehe. That's something that you can't really enjoy with a piston engine.

As yiksing mentioned, though, if you are getting vibration to the point where you can hear it in the door hinges while they are open, I would assume the car isn't in very good condition.

Do you mean the clicking noise when shifting through the gears? That is normal.

I wouldn't jump the gun and buy something you weren't 100% happy with. I'm sure you can talk to a dealer to see if they can't get you an 8 in the color that you like.

 

Something's got to be wrong with both those cars. I don't have any vibration in mine. Like Kevil says, the idle isn't dead smooth but it's not rough by any means. Once past idle it's smooth as a turbine.

Probably both cars needs new engine mounts. Replaced mine under warranty - no problem since. Idle is decent - just RPM drops sometimes, when A/C kicks in, but not to the point to stall.

My motor mounts were replaced and my idle is "almost" as smooth as ice...

 

It seems to vibrate only when you take it out of park (reverse) and the car isn't warmed up.

 

how much would it cost to change the engine mount?

 

The motor mounts on my 6spd were replaced twice and my car still vibrates like an SOB while the A/C clutch is engaged. The service department that I thought was the answer to my prayers (they fixed a number of other issues) has now said that 'all the 8s do that'. They now sound to me like the worthless dealership I switched from. It is utter BS to essentially state that Mazda engineers designed and released to production an automobile that rattles an open door on its hinges while at idle. My steering column vibrates, my seat vibrates, the side mirrors vibrate. Yeah, that's normal...

The car is out of warranty now, so no one will care, even though I've been complaining about this issue since 18K miles.

since it's not "ALL RX-8 are like that" as my understanding from the previious members replies.

Is this pretty typical?

And also, my question is - why do rotaries idle rough (if that is indeed true)?
