over the past two weeks, i backside itchy decided to try as many brands of petrol as possible, and here's my bo liao review. All pumped the moment the yellow light comes on.

Review criteria:
I. Idle vibration (1= shake until balls pain, 5= almost can't feel the vibe)
O. Oomph (1= perodua, 5=almost rex)
M. Mileage

SPC 98
I=3
O=3.5
M=280

V-Power
I=2
O=4
M=310

Mobil 9000
I=3
O=3
M=290

Caltex Platinum
I=4.5
O=3.5
M=300

In summary, i'm sticking to Caltex with Techron man!

i also quite surprised, but the reduction in idle vibration quite stark..... even the US posts are saying Chevron with Techron is quite good.

there was a reader in the ST a few days ago who wrote in the forum to complain abt Caltex and said she'll be ditching Caltex for Shell...

and yesterday someone from Chevron replied. anyone know the whole story?

Its real hard to quantify. I did felt some power with Caltex Platinium from SPC 98. But i cannot confirm for sure.

Many years back, Shell had a press release that they dyno'ed v-power as compared to another premium fuel and found a 2% increase in HP. Coming from a shell sponsored research; i am skeptical. It can be hard to prove or disprove.

For the record, i am using V power. Maybe because its more expensive than SPC so it may be better. (Silly rational, i know)

haven't read the original article. Actually it was the ST forum reply that got me thinking about Caltex. so i did my research about techron, and seems like all the blokes in the US forums and BITOG all swear by chevron with techron. So couple of days back i pumped caltex and immed the vibrations at idle really lessened significantly.

But quality of petrol is actually different in different countries.

For example, the amount of sulphur in SG petrols in higher than in Japan. Thats why the old mitsubishi spacewagon which runs really lean does not deliver the fuel efficiency it promises. They tested it using low sulphur petrol in Japan.

And since we refine our own petrols, we have fresher fuel. Octane levels actually decrease with time.
