View Full Version : Make my ugly Evo sexy...

I'm planning to get new rims for my white Evo VIII next month. Some people like the looks of gold or bronze rims on a white car. I like them too (check sig) but it's a little too loud for my personal tastes. I've settled on a black rim with either a machined lip or chrome lip. So right now I'm debating between the Rota Slipstreams in 17 x 8.5 and the Rota Revs in 17 x 8. My 255's have plenty of tread left on them and will fit either rim very well. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking it should look something like this with the Slipstreams...

17x9 5Zigen FN01RCs in Black Polish or be like me and get Black Racing with the polished lip ;) They'll fit your 255s better, 8" is a little narrow for 255s and I don't like slipstreams :)

That is probably the only EVO I have ever liked...and I hate them all.

Way to turn a peice of shit exterior into a winner. I think all you need is a spoiler. A SMALL ONE. Not a house or jet plane wing, but a normal spoiler. I think it would complete the sleek look you have going from the front to the back.

Nice car all the way from what I see in those pictures.

I have some brand new Falken Azeni 615's on the stockers in a 255 and the consensus seems to be that they'll fit anything from 8" to 9" wide. The thing about 9" rims is that I'm pretty sure I would need spacers to clear the Brembos. Those things aren't cheap either. I dunno though.

I think the look below will complete the ass end of the car pretty nicely. The rear end will also be black like the side mirrors, door handles and new rims...

The Black Racing are the same offset as our stockers and fit perfect, I have them, I know. The 5Zigens with a 35mm offset fit as well without spacers. 255s will fit 8-9" wheels but 9" really is the ideal width for that size tire. If you like the Slipstreams go with em, they're just not my taste and I'm awfully sick of Rotas having been in the Subaru community for so long. I really like the look of the Revs, but if you're going to get aftermarket wheels and already have 255s you should get at least 8.5s.

Is the picture you posted above the black racing rims or the 5Zigen? I'm guessing it's the black racing because I thought the 5Zigen FN01RC is a 5 spoke.

Black on blue is so clean. Thanks dude. It gives me a better idea. Right now I have a chance to get a set of new Rota Slipstreams for $500. We'll see. There are other rims I really like out there like the SSR Type-C, the SSR Competition, the Gram Lights 57C, the Enkei RP03 and the Buddy Club P1 Racing II. I just can't justify spending 3 times as much for rims. That money would be better spent on a set of HKS 272/272 cams, a new fuel pump, maybe adjustable cams gars or even some Denso 720cc injectors.

I was going to buy Work Emotions and backed off, it just didn't make sense to spend that much on wheels I'm using in winter. With the money I saved between the two, I got tuned at AMS :)

I'm guessing you picked up at least 40whp from just the tune alone.

Close to 40 peak and more in other areas of the curve, I'm also getting an extra 30-50 miles per tank. The car feels awesome, was a bit intimidating sitting next to Chris' Black Evo and the shop car during my wimpy dyno runs though :cwm27:

Nice. There's no replacement for a good tune.

Back to the rims though. I'm a total newb at this and want to make sure I know what I'm doing. It looks like I'm gonna pull the trigger on the Slipstreams after all. Sorry. :( I got the guy down to $500 picked up. The measurements are +35mm offset 5x114.3. They come with a set of center caps. What I'm wondering about is lugnuts and hub centrics. Will the factory lugs work and will I need hub centrics?

I definately should have done that. It's a little late now since I've made up my mind already though. I found out that Rota doesn't make the Rev wheels to fit the Evo yet. By process of elimination I'm gonna go with the Slipstream.

I have a question: Do fart cannon exhaust's really do anything for the cars performance?

I know that theoretically the less air restriction through the exhaust the better, but come on, it looks like hell. I would want to see an Evo with quad exhaust like an M3 or GTO with the SAP on it. I think that would look a whole lot better. 4 mufflers could be better than 1 also? I'm not an expert, but just giving my opinion...

Well designed exhausts absolutely do something for performance, they are designed the way they are to be less restrictive. In fact, dual/quad exhausts often just add weight and sometimes has no performance benefit, especially when it's not a true dual exhaust. Lastly, 4 mufflers??? :cwm27:

I think that would look a whole lot better. 4 mufflers could be better than 1 also? I'm not an expert, but just giving my opinion... A true dual exhaust will have a header/exhaust manifold on one side of the V (in the case of a V6, V8, V10, etc) and another on the other side. From there each header/manifold connecst to its own cat, then its own muffler, then exits. The E46 M3 exhaust is NOT a true dual exhaust IIRC. The E46 motor is a straight six and only has a single 6-into-1 type of exhaust manifold. The twin tips are a cosmetic thing. It's the same story on the 350Z, the SRT-4, Acura CL, IS300, Altima, Maxima, etc, etc, etc. You can count the true factrory dual exhaust setups nowadays one hand...'05 GTO, Viper, Vette...maybe a few more.

When you say "coffee can" exhaust I assume you're talking about the tip. When you see a 2.5" or 3" exhaust exiting to a 4" or 5" tip on a naturally aspirated 4 banger...yes...pointless...ricer...all the bad things you're thinking. That's the Civic/Integra crowd's speciality. By throwing a freer flowing exhaust on a small displacement engine already starved for torque, they are removing the only good thing going for that high revving, torque-less wonder under the hood.

The Evo is a different story because it has a turbocharger. I'll assume you understand how a turbo charger works. Therefore you'll understand that the best exhaust setup for a turbocharged engine is no exhaust at all. Because that's not practical in a street application, us Evo owners try to find the most free flowing exhaust allowed by law. Currently a nice 3" setup with minmum bends (and preferrably catless) is sufficient up until about 400whp. I guess if you wanna call it a coffee can exhaust, then yeah...on an Evo it makes a lot of sense.

Well we're going on like 10 days straight of rain. It's killing me that I can't even wash my car but I took some pics anyways so you guys can see how it turned out with the new rims. I'm happy with the color match between the rims, side mirrors, door handles and roof stripping. It's a big pic...

Sorry man. I'm usually good at this stuff. I run a server and FTP tons of crap to it all the time so people can download direct from me. I bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I'm still undergoing the painfully slow process of installing all of the old apps. I figured I'd try my ISP's "photo album" mode but I must have fuxor'd something. Try this...
