View Full Version : Anyone Need an Install Party?

Anyone have anything to install or fix and want to eat and drink while they do it? I've got puddle lights... :o: Shari is coming in town April 8 and I'd like to get something set up if we have enough people wanting to participate... Jenkins - not to intrude, ;) but do you have plans that day? Are you willing to share your garage again? I promise to make Harry leave at a decent hour this time. :)

I can if you need me to. We installed ALWAZL8's puddles a few months ago and they're pretty cool. If we do this, I'll be sure to document well.

Wow... You just picked one of the only weekends I have free... well, kind of. I was actually thinking of having a party that night. Maybe we can have an after party at my house. I plan on getting a keg......... :D:

What are you talking about Dazy??? The body kit only took 14 hours, and we were gone by 11pm... simmer down. :p:

Since Jenkins is a pro at drilling into my car... i'll try to get the wing painted and ready (if it ever arrives) before then. My only other mod till april is the Interceptor, and i'm sure I'll probably install that within 15 seconds of it arriving :)

Matters what u want in the end. We are going to use JR Customs in Irving for our install. It is gonna be pricey, but the fiberglass work painted to match the Shinka color of the car will be nice in the end i think.

I've already been doing the research on subs and amps so I know what I'm getting into. I've asked for suggestions from Jenkins as well since he does know the audiobahn product line pretty well.

How much are you paying for a custom install, if i can ask?

For a fiberglass box to hold 2 10s and 2 amps I was quoted around 800 for the labor and install of my parts. Gonna take up all the trunk. Wont be any carpet left at all. So there will be alot of fiberglass. Was also quoted at least a week to need to have the car up there for the whole job.

Depending on my schedule I might like to attend. I don't really have anything I need installed, but it would give me a chance to meet everyone, and I've done some light modding myself, and I enjoy the work so I could lend a hand.

No, the driver of the truck is Richard, a good friend of Jenkins. Jenkins owns the Ti Grey 8 that was parked at the very end w/ 20's, MS kit and CF wing, red/black decals on the side.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone, but I'm gonna give my 2 cents.

If you plan on using up your entire trunk space for your system, I would highly suggest having an alternate vehicle to transport your larger items. Yes - you can put groceries and suitcases and most things in the back seat of the RX8. However, if you have more than 2 people in your car, and you all have a large duffle bag for a weekend trip, the car ride will suck. I have some trunk space, but not much, and trying to fit luggage for a road trip wasn't easy.

No, but that looks really good. I'll look into it.

Here's a simple question that someone might have the answer to, as far as car subs go, why are the audiobahn subs so much more efficient than everyone else? Most of the JL's are rated between 84-89 dB SPL and almost all of the audiobahn stuff is 90-99 db SPL. Efficiency is a big deal when it comes to how loud things will be. It's just confusing when the closest I've seen (in the limited number I've looked at) is Infinity's with 90 dB SPL.

I sent 4080 a PM about the box. We'll see. A lot of people are saying 2 10's is overkill for the 8.. you wanna know what's sad? I'm more concerned with throwing off the weight balance of the car than how much bass I have :b If I had only one, it'd be 14+lbs heavier over 1 wheel :b

I have some DPE/Whiteline front swaybar bushings that I had planned to install the next time I went home to Houston because I lack the tools at college (I attend SMU currently).

I'm with fenderlover on the curbrash issue - if someone has a dremmel tool and the right tip they'd like to donate, that'd be awesome.

I have a feeling that I wont be able to attend that day, though. Going to check my calendar.

Lets do it. I got tools, dremmels, and what ever else you need.

Just let me know!

Hey ajax, you could do 1 10 inch sub in a 4080 box on one side and then your amp on the other. that would save space and look and sound good. slim only has one 10 and it is plenty.

lol... I have a solobaric (square for those who don't know) 10" and I am adding (2) 10" kicker comp VR subs before the Austin Trip.

The one kicker is definitely more than enough. I had 1 solobaric 10" sub and it was more bass than you would want on a normal music listening basis.

You could wire a remote bass control to the switches by your display dimmer. That way it would be really easy to turn them up for that darn carbon build up. ;-)

How much bass do you need? Reading through these posts I was reminded of a thread I read awhile back at Houston-Imports: here (http://www.houston-imports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=275840&highlight=350Z)

I'm sure there's some room somewhere in the trunk for one or two of these little suckers. Even better would be 1 or 2 eD eu-700's on about 400watts. They sound better than my old 12" Sony Xplod's.

There's a part of me that wants to buy an extra plastic door that bridges the gap between rear seat and trunk, remove the back part and try and fabricate that into a box.

Well, got my sub box orderred.
Might be here this week, we'll see.

Uhh..
Now for the sub.. i gotta pick one..
So far I've had the following reccommended:
JL 10W6V2 (400W 83.7 dB SPL Dual 4Ohm)
Rockford Fosgate P310D4 (400W 85 dB SPL Dual 4Ohm)
Audiobahn ALUM10N (800W 95.6 dB SPL Dual 6Ohm)

Now, I wonder about a few things..
Why the hell is that JL $400?
Why is the audiobahn Dual 6Ohm voice coils and why if it's so efficient is it so much cheaper than the other 2? (you can get them for $70 whereas the cheapest I've seen the fosgate is 175).

I still need an amp too..

I found an online site selling the JL Sub for 240 + shipping.
I also found the e1400 amp for close to 300.
To really power that audiobahn sub, i'm gonna need a more powerful amp, 800w minimum to put the sub in it's optimal operating range..

Just something I thought I'd point out.

JL Audio is ok stuff... don't get me wrong... but it's not worth the money they want for it. I could take Audiobahn or Kicker, spend half to 3/4 the money and get a sound system that sounds just as loud with the same clarity. I would have to recommend staying away from Fosgate however. They have outstanding amplifiers, while their subs are a bit on the weak side.

I have had a little of everything and have found Kicker to be my preferred sub for the sound, clarity, and money ratio. I understand that Kicker is not one of your preferred subs, so I would definitely go with the Audiobahn.

That said, if you did decide to go with the JL or any other dual 4 ohm sub, you might have to go with 2 amps. Most, not all, amps that are 2 channel can only be ran at 2 ohms when in Mono. However, taking a 6 Ohm DVC sub to 3 ohms and running it Stereo should not be an issue. Just something else to think about.

Ajax - If you are interested, I have 2 brand new Kicker CVR DVC 10" subs (4 ohm VCs) if you would like to hook them up and listen before you purchase your subs... just let me know.

I'm only going to be running a single sub so mono is no big deal.

I have no problem with kicker. It just wasn't one of the subs I was reccommended. I honestly can say I started out knowing nothing about Subs/Amps and now I know a little but the biggest truth is sound quality is subjective. It's hard to listen to every sub out there because you really need to hear it in your enclosure to know how it's going to sound.

I have .8 CF of air in this sealed enclosure. Does that fit into kicker's range for operation?

Slims8

Are you kidding me. I dont know my stuff? Im not trying to be a dick or rude at all here. But, Audiobahn is not and never will be considered High End Equipment at all. Yes they can be made to sound good. Hell I have a full Audiobahn set-up in my wives show Cavalier. I have installed 40 thousand dollar set-ups in Airplanes and each 10 inch sub used was 8 grand a piece. I know a little on stereo equipment as I have been in the industry since I was 15 working with my dad at his company.

In the end it all boils down to what he wants. But if you do go with Audiobahn or any speaker for that matter, dont go with the lower speakers in their line.

Ajax,

What kind of box are you going with?
When you decide on an amp, let me as I think I am doing a very similar set up in my car soon.

For what it's worth: JL's are very good subs (and pricey) but I had dual Audiobahn 12's in my Mazda 626 and those things sounded awesome!

03-21-2006, 09:48 PM
As far as speakers go, the best thing to do is to go around to a couple different car audio shops and listen to them, put different types of music through them and go from there. I used to own 2 12" JL audio's so I am a little biased but I am sure that Audiobahn, and some other manufacturers make a decent sub. It all depends on your budget and the overall effect you are going for. I recommend spending some money and have the amp, crossover, and equalizer installed by a well known shop. Jenkins and Richard would be the best ones to ask on the board.

But if you do go with Audiobahn or any speaker for that matter, dont go with the lower speakers in their line.

holy shit, how many cars do you have? so far I've counted a full race SRT-4, you're asking about turboing an 8, you have a solstice too? and now a show cavalier? (er...cavalier...show?..mmmkay) what's next? I say pics or bs :D: and if I'm wrong, I apologize and you're one lucky dude..i guess..or something lol

and not that I'm biased either, but honestly some of the Soundstream stuff I'm running is actually pretty decent (And I was verrrrry aprehensive at first, even considered swapping it out for other stuff for a while) They've hired one of the guys from Crossfire to help run the show there and he's already made numerous changes to improve their products, I give it another 6 months to a year and they may even return to being better than the Soundstream of old :)

Jenkins and Richard would be the best ones to ask on the board.

they would be among the best ones to ask, not THE best :D: lol :mdrmed:

BTW, Canary... he's posted pics before so its no joke. I think there was also a Scion XB in the mix as well.

Ajax, i suggest we take the AUDIOBAHN vs JL Audio wars to a seperate thread.

Lastly... So lets get back on topic. I'll start a new thread!!!

it's all good, I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything, it's just sounding alot like someone is trying way too hard to impress folks and it's just not necessary. The real people who go to shows and do this or that are usually the same folks who don't talk about it a whole lot, although I did mention mine solely because it was my first trophy for a car in over a decade and it represents a lot more than just aking 1st, it's a personal victory for me considering the pure hell and trauma I went through over the last year or so, I can dig up the threads lol

And I am not trying to brag at all. It sucks paying for all these cars. Believe me on that. It is the wife who wants the RX8 and Solstice. The 2 most expensive of the group. I just get the fun of modding them. I have yet to take first in any of the shows i have been in so go figure. And as for not talking about it because u actually go to shows? Come on. I would love to "brag" if I won best of show or best interior or best system after all the work i had put into a car. It isnt being a asshole at all. Heck I can and will help anyone with there car at any time. I am not above that at all.

No reason really. We enjoy them. No point in saving all our money. Just enough to be happy when i retire. Having to much fun in life right now. Will slow down one day.....or not.

it's cool dude, I'm not trying to give you shit or anything, just reading your posts you kinda' came across as some sort of "look at me" kinda' guy who was trying to flaunt etc. I'd have a ton of cars if I had the $ so no argument there. That solstice should be a lot of funto play with once the market for it picks up, as small and light as it is maybe someday you could have yourself a sleeper Elise killer lol What I meant about guys not talking is that they don't make a big deal about their show cars, Jenkins and I both compete pretty regularly, but I haven't seen him spout off about all his sponsors or his mods or his trophies or whatever, probably doesn't make any sense but maybe what I'm trying to say is a lot of folks on forums talk a good game, and then drive around in 100 dollar cars etc. I see it all the time, "I'm going to get this" or "my car is show that" and then it's bone stock and looks the same for years lol good luck with your rides and when you do stuff post pics, it helps for credibility (if that even matters, after all it is just the internet) to have proof etc :)

Cool deal dude. I understand the negativity of the internet. IT is all over all boards. I have left some sites cause it got outta control.

Yea the Solstice will be a killer hopefully soon. A guy up in Chicago just finished a crate LS1 swap in his at his shop and I have been talking to him about doing a LS2 in ours. Just a 8400 dollar price tag is what about made me poop myself! Think imma stick with the new hahn turbo kit that is coming out next month for it.
