I don't understand why but I just noticed when in Idle, the car seemed to backfire. The car was not cold...

I'm not sure why its happening? I do need an oil change is about 500 miles, but other than that, I don't know why it would happen.

I'm a little over 15k Miles....any ideas guys??

Are you sure its backfire or just a bit of hiccups in the idle?

hiccups sounds more like it...dont get it tho...any ideas???

Mine's like that too, every few seconds you hear a hiccup. And the idle is quite rough too. It sounds like an old VW from the outside when idling warm and they tell me at Mazda that this is quite normal. When it revs over 1,000 though it is smooth as hell!

without hearing it, its hard to say....so youll be sitting still at a stop light and it will just start to make back-fire pops?

EDIT : also, does the car feel like it has the same ammount of power it always had. what octane and brand of gas do you use. Do you mix any oil in with your gas, the car calls for spark plugs every 30k miles, but I found that after 15k my plugs were shot.

actually, it is a characteristic of the rotary engine. Unless you have noticeable serious performance degradation, that little muffled backfiring is perfectly normal.

you should hear a ported rotary engine! brap brap brap pop lol

Mine was doing the same thing. After I got the cold weather start package it went away. I think when they replaced the plugs that's what fixed it. :Freak_ani

Yeah man ! I had a bridge-ported 13B in my first gen, you think thats bad you should see flames coming out the back at idle !!! =D

I had a 2004 that had a somewhat rought idle, rotaries do tend to be a little rough at idle. I now have a 2005 and the idle is pretty smooth, expecially for a rotary. I would check the plugs just for the heck of it.
