Thumbs up Porsche meet drivers love the 8

On Saturday I was in Long Island with my 8 to go see my cousin....As I was down there in a parking lot there was a Porsche Boxter meet pretty amazed at how many porsches there are and how young the owners are (a couple of them looked old)..... I was in the same parking lot, and they flagged me down and they let me come and see their cars even though I didn't have a porsche which was nice of them, beautiful cars might I add.... They were all interested in the 8 which i thought was modest of them, I popped my hood for them, and we started talking, they each said that the 8 was a car that they loved considering it is a rotary engine...Some of the people there said they had run ins with 8's (non racing run in) just saw them at a light or at a store and talked to the owners... had a lot of good things to say about 8's and 8 drivers they said that not one single 8 owner they met was a dick or cocky....

well just though I would share my first run in with another bunch of sports cars.....

you got to love the Porsche Boxter S, crazy car

No need for us 8 owners to feel inadequate.... Porsche owners know money isn't everything... when it comes to interesting vehicles... uniqueness is priceless... and we have that in the 8 in spades...they just happen to have more money lol.... but love of nice cars transends marques.

Nice that others can appreciate the 8 for what it is ......instead of what it can't do.

Boxster S is alot quicker--my brother had one and he recently took delivery of a 2006 911 Cabriolet 6spd.

Boxsters are good performace cars for the price but I'd rather keep my 8.
Plus, I don't think I'd fit in a boxster.

I see too many Boxsters around to want one. I hardly ever see any RX-8s around.

I've owned two 993 (air cooled 911's) and a 944. I never really considered the boxster for the same reason I've never considered the miata.

Well, I can never afford a boxter, but even if I had the money to buy one, I don't think I would. I love the design of the 8, inside and out. No other car matches it. I do think that it was great that the boxter owners recognized the 8 for the cool car that it is.

Er, guys, let's be realistic. The Boxster outperforms an RX-8 in pretty much every category. Well, perhaps the early 2.5L Boxsters are in the same performance category, but other than that, the Boxster is a step up. If the 2.7L cars, or especially the 3.0L cars were in SCCA B-stock autocross, the RX-8 wouldn't be the "hot car" for BS - it would be an also-ran, just like the 350-Z.

Having said that, it's pretty cool that the Boxster owners were up on the RX-8. Just goes to show you that not all Porsche drivers are snobs.

If I ever can, I'll replace the Miata with a used Boxster, which actually can be had at pretty good prices. Yes, I'll keep the RX-8.

But a Cayman, or perhaps the new Boxster-S, those are cars I'd consider selling both my Mazdas to obtain. Sure they are obscenely priced new, but they are sweet.

I aspire to have a 911--I come from a line of Porschephiles.

I attended a track event last week... the Porsche guys commented that the RX8 does well on track. I had no problems reeling in a Boxster S. Boxster S did pull away from the tighter exits ... but RX8 pretty much hung behind its tail on the straights and RX8 seems to be more stable under hard braking before turn-in and I gained plenty of lost ground. Mid corner speed and stability is pretty much the same. Just my observations.

Boxster S is faster in a straightline but not much. It all comes down to exit speed. I also need to sharpen up my line... I know I can improve my times. It's all about learning, who cares if someone is faster... I HAD FUN!!!!

Ohhh, the driver in the Boxster S knew where I was gaining and was pretty cool about the whole thing.

You had fun and knew where your weaknesses were...now jump into his shoes and think about the Boxster guy...here he's got a fancy car but is having his tail chased and nibbled at by a car costing half the $ with far less HP and less ahemm ... 'power & speed'.

Must be a good guy to be so well humored about it...bet he thinks about you on his pillow at night lol!

I've also always had good luck with the corvette people. Usually they are people who just like cars and the mechanical underpinnings.

As for 8 owners not being cocky, that might have something to do with the fact that 8's aren't anywhere near the fastest stoplight to stoplight type cars, so you need to understand the whole package.

The guy is a best man in one of the RX8s on that event. The S driver is actually thinking about joining us on one of our RX8 track day event(s).

Nahhh... I wouldn't lose sleep over it if I were him. I actually wanted him to offer me his keys. BUT... it didn't happen.

There were 2 993 turbos there on the day... I was coming onto the straights when both of them spun out into turn1. The first dude spun out coz he checked his speedo... the second dude spun in sympathy.

As I've said... the Porsche guys were pretty cool. We also managed to park our RX8s and 1 MX-5 in between the 2 Ferrari 430s and Porsche people. How cool is that?

Yeah, track days are fun. I remember dropping an NSX in my Miata (in the turns, anyway). It's all about driver commitment & skill, and the tires you run.

Still think that the Boxster, with a fully commited driver, would be faster on an autocross course, although being mid-engine it probably takes more skill to coax that extra performance out of it.
