View Full Version : So Where The Bloody Hell Are You?
Gomez 03-09-2006, 07:32 PM The Australian Tourism Commission have had their latest ad campaign banned from British TV. The "Shrimp on the Barbie" campaign is long gone!!
http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=71968
The Poms have taken offence to the use of the word "Bloody" in the adverts. This is the country that brought us the Sex Pistols and FCUK!!

Nemesis8 03-09-2006, 08:01 PM You have camels down there?
Gomez 03-09-2006, 08:31 PM Oh yeah. Lots of them.
Want a recipe?
Gomez 03-09-2006, 08:35 PM Casserole of Camel and Seasonal vegetables
Serves 4
500gr Camel Rump, diced large
1 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 carrot, chopped
2 Tbs plain flour
1 ltr vegetable stock
800gr sweet potato, peeled
2 Tbs parsley, chopped
2 bay leaves
Sauté onion in a pan with garlic and carrot until soft. Stir in flour, cook 1 min.
Add meat in batches to seal.
Add stock, bring to the simmer, cover and cook 1 hour or until camel is tender.
Add diced sweet potato to wet ingredients to help with the thickening along with the parsley and bay leaf. Cook a further 20 mins.
This is a meal in its self, with very little washing up! For something different substitute 1 cup stock with 1 cup of beer.
Of course no hearty casserole is complete without a quality red…I recommend Sirromet 2001 Petit Verdot.
Gomez 03-09-2006, 08:37 PM Got crocodile and kangaroo recipes too.
Hard to find much on cooking platypus......
Glyphon 03-09-2006, 09:31 PM what's a pom?
Gomez 03-09-2006, 09:38 PM From Wikipedia....
Pommy
The term Pommy for a British person is commonly used in Australian English and New Zealand English, and is often shortened to Pom. The origin of this term is not confirmed.
One etymology of the term is thought to be that, as the majority of early immigrants to Australia were British, it is rhyming slang for "immigrant" from a contraction of the word "pomegranate", or possibly more directly related to the appearance of the fruit, as it bears a more than passing resemblance to the typical pale complexioned Briton's skin after his or her first few days living under the hot Australian sun.
Another etymology, is such that POM is a shortened acronym of Prisoner of His/Her Majesty (POHM). This refers to the fact that most of Australian's first settlers were convicts, sentenced to transportation. Upon arrival in the country they would sport a "uniform", with the four initials emblazoned on the back. Convicts with an extended stay on Australian soil would no longer have to wear the shirt, and would often refer to newer entrants into the country as "Pohmmys". The modern term excludes the H. Such actions could have presumed the Australian trait of self-joking. But though this may be commonly believed, it is believed to be false, as the term was coined long before acronyms were believed to be used in common parlance.
Other suggestions are mostly along the lines that POM is a different acronym, such as "Prisoner of Mother England" or "Port of Melbourne", referring to the fact that the earliest Australian settlers were convicts.
Some etymologies can be considered false etymologies, however there is a little to no evidence of a truthful conclusion to the word.
The use of the word 'Pom' is contentious. British people living in Australasia generally find the term offensive and demeaning as it is used to cause offence. Attitudes to the use of the word have varied over the years, from the 1960s when slogans such as 'bash a pom a day' were heard on New Zealand radio, to today, when the word has become so entrenched that few Australians and New Zealanders see any reason to be politically correct about the use of this word that remains insulting to British people living in those countries.
99% of Australians refer to the English as Poms. The word is getting used more due to the rival in rugby and cricket. The expression "whinging poms" is heard all over Australia.
StewC625 03-09-2006, 09:54 PM G'day mate!
Glyphon 03-09-2006, 09:54 PM well, if they are complaining about the use of the word "bloody" maybe the rugby/cricket fans are right...friggin whinning poms :D:
Glyphon 03-09-2006, 09:55 PM also, take out the onion, and that camel recipe sounds pretty good. now...where to find camel meat.
saturn 03-09-2006, 09:56 PM Do Austrailians dislike American tourists? I know it's sort of a blanket statement, but I was just curious. In case you're wondering, Americans are amused by your funny accents and sometimes can't tell if you're British or Australian. Overall we'd all like to visit Australia, but mostly just way too lazy to do so.
Gomez 03-09-2006, 11:58 PM Nuh, we think you Americans are cute.
Weird as all buggery, but cute.
saturn 03-10-2006, 12:14 AM Nuh, we think you Americans are cute.
Weird as all buggery, but cute.
Good deal. I love when British and Australian people throw in all this vernacular. I don't know why it's just funny. It's like regular old American English, but with all these made up words or something. I'm more familiar with the British terms like bollocks, wanker, etc. (then again, Aussie's might use them too). I should probably check out the Australian forum and learn some new words.
The Internet is awesome.
vectorwolf 03-10-2006, 02:36 AM ^Lol, I totally agree. Could listen to either dialect all day. :)
And I'm surprised at this ban... I figured the united theocracy of america was the only nation that enjoys censoring every trace of foul language? lol And on a side note, I think the word "Bloody", when used in that sense, is actually pretty funny. :) So odd how the worst imaginable curse to one group of people (even within the same language), can be totally harmless to everyone else.
They're just a bunch of poofs.
saturn 03-10-2006, 02:50 AM They're just a bunch of poofs.
Hahahahah, I've been saying that for the past month ever since I found out what it means. The FCC can't stop me now!
Aw, screw the bloody poms. Too much like America and so very uptight over such harmless issues.
Having visited Australia in the late 90s, I will vouch for Gomez's testament that they like Americans. Everywhere I went, people were friendly and fun. It's a strange thing being the one with the accent!
So my basic reaction to all this was: who wants the poms visiting Oz anyway? Better that they're not showing the ad after all. Maybe more of them will stay away. Not good for tourism, I know, but then only the FUN people will visit!
Let's all go out and get pissed!
Cheers, Gomez :)
StewC625 03-10-2006, 05:01 PM On my way to a major Friday aftenroon piss-up right now!
Easy_E1 03-11-2006, 11:16 PM I liked the bloody comercial,

Gomez 03-12-2006, 02:07 AM As you can see in the ad.......we have plenty of room :)
Gohan 03-12-2006, 11:04 AM I liked the comercial

US group set to protest over 'bloody' ad
A major conservative American lobby group is set to unleash a campaign of protest against Australian tourism's "where the bloody hell are you?" TV advertisement.
The controversial commercial made has its US debut in front of 20 million American TV viewers and one influential group was not amused.
The American Family Association (AFA), which has more than two million members and leads campaigns against abortion and gay rights, was upset with the bikini-clad model Lara Bingle's use of "bloody" and "hell" in the ad's tagline.
AFA members are expected to bombard Tourism Australian with thousands of emails and phone calls in coming weeks to vent their feelings.
Members are also expected to boycott Australia as a holiday destination.
"I just feel pretty sure the typical American family who is watching TV with their children and they're exposed to this ad are going to be upset," AFA director of special projects, Randy Sharp, told AAP.
"I don't want my children to hear that phrase.
"It's a shocking phrase because we're not familiar with it.
"I guess they use it all the time in Australia, but it's a foreign language here so I think it'll have a negative impact rather than positive."
Bugger.....guess we won't be seeing any of the 2 million loony AFA members down here then.
Jeezuz.........I'm spewin'
saturn 03-24-2006, 12:59 AM Bollocks! I think those bloody wankers need to bugger off.
With that statement I've completely exhausted my knowledge of the British and/or Australian culture. Awesome.
Gomez 03-24-2006, 01:03 AM Bloody Canadians reject hell of an ad
By Richard Reynolds, Toronto
March 23, 2006
"BLOODY" goes over just fine with Canadians, but references to "hell" are definitely out. And half-empty glasses of beer are beyond the pale.
Canadian officials have refused to air the well-publicised "Where the bloody hell are you?" Australian tourism advertisement in its current form.
But unlike the British, who feigned offence at "bloody", the Canadians have objected to "hell". And they didn't like the friendly offer "We've bought you a beer" either.
Under Canada's restrictions on alcohol advertising, ads cannot feature anyone enjoying alcohol. Full glasses are fine, but a half-empty glass apparently shows people drink the stuff.
Australian Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said she found the ruling astonishing. "What this decision shows is that Canada lags behind Americans, Brits and even Germans in the sense of humour stakes." She said the beer reference would now be omitted.
Ms Bailey said Canadian authorities had found the line "So where the bloody hell are you?" friendly and inviting.
But the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said the ad would not be run during family viewing because of the reference to hell.
Struth....the Canadians aren't allowed to see a half glass of beer??? What's going on up there north of the Equator??
Wanna know the funny bit? The Poms have backed down and are now running the commercial unedited in prime time..... :mdrmed:
Gomez 03-24-2006, 01:07 AM BTW, for my Canuck friends......the can of beer Fred is holding in my avatar is full. Just been opened.
I don't wanna be censored off the Canadian regional forum.... :)
Photic 03-24-2006, 11:05 AM Bloody ridiculous. Damn yanks and canucks with their bloody panties in a tumble.
I didn't read the one about the US rejecting it, but I did read on yesterday about the Poms finally accepting it.
DarkBrew 03-25-2006, 12:05 AM Hey Gomez, when we visited Queensland we were called a 'snap frozen yanks'. Now the snap frozen thing is fine but yank?
As for the ad, only the CBC will end up banning things like that. It's too bad that Canada is being dragged down this so called 'family values' path by the big Christian fundamentalist country south of our border.
saturn 04-01-2006, 08:35 PM I just caught the tail end of this commercial today. There was some scantily clad woman asking me "where the bloody hell" I was. It was pretty sweet. All 4 seconds of it.
DOMINION 04-01-2006, 10:26 PM Oh ymmmm. I have wanted to go to Australia from when I was 10! I'll eat everything! lol!
