Either way, I was referring to how it 'looked' not if it rubbed or not. Lowering a car is fine, but slamming it like that just makes it look awkward when the wheels dissapear into the wells like that. Rubbing or not, it just looks bad now :(

Otherwise, awesome work ! :)

I dont like the way the rx-8 look from stock,,, is too high

mikeb
08-08-2003, 03:31 PM
the stock rx8 is to high. It looks good lowered. Cant wait to see the final project. What springs did you use to lower it

ACOSTARACING
08-08-2003, 03:51 PM
Well the first springs i cut. SInce it didn't rub or anything, i took it to a spring company and had them make me duplicates, the right way, and now, that's what i have. Custom

mikeb

nothing wrong with custom. I want to drop mine too

It's great when you HAVE money like that.

Whee! You get a new car and rip out it's guts. Then you drop it 3 inches and slam a 3 rotor 20b engine in it!

Please let us know what the final tab comes to. If the price is right, maybe I'll bring my car up there for a retrofit. ;)

How difficult was it to cram a 20B inside such a small engine compartment? How about engine mounting points and such? How's the weight distribution now?

ACOSTARACING
08-08-2003, 08:35 PM
The engine compartment is actually bigger than the 93 rx-7. after you remove the ecu and battery. Acostaracing has done alot of wiring to the car to make it work. The weight distribution will be almost the same, cause we are adding weight to the front of the car, but at the same time we are adding weight to the rear of the car, (ex, battery) my ecu is now in the front passenger side like the FD rx-7. I'm very very happy with the project so far, everything is goin so perfect.

neit_jnf
08-08-2003, 09:41 PM
How about the tranny and differential? Are you going with the stock units or replacing them along with the renesis?

ACOSTARACING
08-08-2003, 10:22 PM
as of right now, stock. We would try it, if it breack then i will probally put a FD Tranny, And maybe a FD Rear

From what I've read on the tranny, it should be very breakable with a 20BT in front of it. Perhaps if you break it while dyno tuning, we'll have a very good idea of what power levels it'll cope with before grenading? ;)

Awesome project...

looks great Acosta... so what spec T04 is that?? the polishing is really nice.

one question: why the stock intake manifold??

ACOSTARACING
08-11-2003, 12:46 PM
The Electronics is already done. That was actually the first thing they did.

The turbo is a T78 Dual Ballbearing turbo, By Innovative turbo System. It is a Q-trim wheel, with an A/R of 1.32

ACOSTARACING
08-11-2003, 12:50 PM
The reason we wanted to use the 3 Rotor intake Manifold, is because i want the car to look like that engine actually came with the car ( hehe) remember this is goin to be a show car/ race car. for the street.

daedelgt
08-11-2003, 03:54 PM

ACOSTARACING

well we are goin to run two muffer to keep it dual. it muffer would be 2 1/2 and is goin to split for a Y from the down pipe. the down pipe will be 5" And we will be using Magnaflow muffer all stainless steal. We are very very excite about this project

ACOSTARACING
08-11-2003, 04:31 PM
The turbo we are using, comes with the Exhaust Housing 5". Remember guys the 20b engine creates alot of heat. So we need to bring the heat out as soon as possible. If not we'll have back-pressure. With Back pressure i'll be cracking the manifold, and the motor will suffer.

What did you have to do to get the 20b engine to mount in the RX8?

ACOSTARACING
08-11-2003, 10:03 PM
Alot of work and alot of wiring, we made everything harder cause we kept the hole suspension stock. So that way i wont get no bumpstear or nothing. Because we did it this way, we had to custom make new mounts, oil pan, and couple more parts. You will have to call up the shop, for more info, speack to them

ACOSTARACING

The only real place to find a 20b was in the cosmo, a JDM only luxury car. (I think there was racing 3 rotors too, but harder to find).

As to price :

The 20b engine can be picked up for about 2500.00. Figure shipping cost, etc, you are looking about 2900, or 3000. Lets say 3000.00 for the sake of it. Now, to have a performance engine we need to tear it all down, put new housings in, new seals, etc. A typical place (pineapple, mva, etc) will charge about 6,000 - 7,000 for a ported, pinned, etc built 20B engine.

So, now you have 9,000 invested alone in the engine. But wait, you cannot just plop the engine in the car and go. Lets add some other things. Turbo. 4k is a good estimate. A typical Innovative dual ball bearing turbo runs about 2200.00 from them. Add the custom manifold, 1000.00 (conservative quote here), and a large wastegate to support the airflow, figure about 600.00. This right here adds up to 3800 not including shipping and other little nick-nacks (nipples, wastegate spring, etc, etc).

So, thus far we have 9,000 for an engine, and 4,000 for the turbo. Thus, 13,000 invested so far.

Well, lets talk about an intercooler and radiator setup. Due to the heat and cooling charge, a typical 20B custom intercooler runs about 1700 - 2800 in this industry. You could get away with an off the shelf unit, but that sacrifices other areas. For cheapness sake lets assume the intercooler was 1700.00 Figure piping now. Custom 3" piping and silicone tubing would run you about 300.00 when said and done. That is about 2,000 for the intercooler setup right here. A good radiator and fans will run about 700.00 total. Now, because you have a 20B you have to change the water pump housing design area too. This will cost about 300.00 extra. So the cooling area is now 1000.00. Total, we are talking an aditional 3,000.

To add what we have thus far, 9K + 4K + 3K = 16,000.

Ok. Yay. We are getting close. Lets talk about the ignition and computer system. We have to have one of these to run the car correctly. Lets talk about the computer system first. There are a few choices to choose from. A microtech, Haltech, and a few other more expensive choices. For sake of this particular conversion, lets go with the microtech. Once you add up all the computer stuff (LTX12, 3Bar, Wiring Harness, Wideband Sensor, Laptop Port, etc), you are at about 1700.00 or so. Also, you need coils to ignite the plugs. You will spend about 600 or so on just the coils, and an additional 120 on good wires and plugs. How are we doing thus far? 1700 + 600 + 120 = 2420 for the computer associated stuff.

16,000 + 2420 = 18420.00.

Now, lets talk fuel. We are not going to use the crappy stock injectors, lines, and pumps. We are doing it right remember. Add up all the large injectors, fuel rail, two fuel pumps, sump, and lines. You are looking about 2300 or so for all of this. Keep adding.

18420 + 2300 = 20720.

Now, lets get to the drive line issue. These stock axles cannot handle this torque and hp. Instantly, we are looking at 800 for new chromoly axles. What about the diff? Nope. Crap with this power. Add another 800.00. Ok.. Transmission? Wait... we will be using a Guru 6 speed dog box. Oh, that runs in the neighborhood of 8,000 more. What about a 20b flywheel and counter weight? Oh, lets throw in there for 650.00. Clutch? Yep, need a strong one for the job. This will cost you about another 500 for a good unit. Lets add up: 800 + 800 + 8000 + 650 + 500 = 10750.

Add it to our listing.

20720+10750 = 31470.

Ok. Not done yet! What about the gauges? All the Defi system is needed. Boost, Water tempature, fuel pressure, egt. Dont forget the pods. This will cost you about 950 total when all said and done.

31470 + 950 = 32420

Exhaust! Oh we forgot that. 4" exhaust with muffler, and setup stuff. That will be about 1100 total for the downpipe (custom made) through the back of the muffler.

32420 + 1100 = 33520.

Ok. Misc parts must be needed. All of this is what kills you. You can budget about 5000.00 for this. This would include all the little stuff. Shortening the LIM, and UIM, various little things that you need, hoses, etc etc etc. Ask any one who has done a 20B conversion, and they will tell you this kills you here. For a shop, the cost would be less. Lets average 2500.

33520 + 2500 = 36020

Now, what about labor, dyno tuning, etc?

I think I will stop here.

He does go on later (on another thread here, but total cost is over $80k - all this is rough guesswork and I dont think includes peoples time/work.

As to price :

that's not quite the whole truth... check out Pettit, Pineapple, Kiwi (from NZ who happen to build and tune 4-rotors, as does Pineapple)... there are TONS of tuning shops who actually build custom 3 rotor engines for far less than $80k dollars. RedRX-7 has spared absolutely no expense in his estimation of the build, and that's an engine ready for ~900 hp. you don't HAVE to spend that kind of money to get 3 rotor performance. and all-motor 3 rotor could still probably hit somewhere close to 350hp in a street-drivable level of tune, and way way more with a p-port and such.

:D see what i get for skimming?

but still, a really good motor can be built, tuned, and installed for less than $40k.

The 40K is just not motor. is every thing around the motor, plus labor, plus pick and delivery, ECu, tunning, dyno, MSD, etc etc. go to my website, and it shows you a complete list
