View Full Version : My job did it again!!!!
BunnyGirl 02-27-2006, 06:44 PM They are now taking away our phone/internet reimbursements that we get. We can't work without a dedicated phone and DSL line and has been reimbursed for as long as I can remember. Not anymore. That means another $120 they are taking away from me. Plus, we have to use their supplied computer which used to cost $25 a month but will now cost $50. They are collecting this retroactively back to January 1 when this was supposed to change but they "forgot" to do it, so that means my paycheck on March 10 will be between $200-$300 tops, for working 40 hours a week full time. They also just "restructured" my account formats so now I get $6-$9 an hour instead of $9-$13. I was going to keep this job part time while I took a new full time job. Now it is not worth my while at all. It will cost me $170 a month to work for them.
I have calculated that I require $22 an hour to cover my expenses without me panicking that I can't pay for anything. What I am hoping now (since I have two job interviews) I can get one to pay me at least $18.50 an hour (most likely to be Providence) and that I can get an "on-call" job, which would be part time with the other hospital or something since they both had openings for "on-call" positions.
I cannot believe how ridiculous this work situation is becoming. I could probably make more money standing out on the street corner holding a sign begging for money than I do working for these people in any capacity!!!!!
I tried calling Oregon's labor division (board or something :) )to see if there was something I could do to complain about MedQuist or not or get some kind of remedy to this and they said that since MedQuist didn't have an actual place of business in this state, that I would need to call New Jersey, since that is where they are headquartered. I called New Jersey and they were trying to tell me they can't help me because I live and work in Oregon. I explained to this man what Oergon told me and he said he would "check into it." I don't think I am going to get any help there.
I hope I can get out of this company soon and get into "better" jobs that actually seem to appreciate people doing their work and that I will be able to get my finances straightened out. It would please me to no end to hear that something horribly devastating happened to MedQuist and that they went out of business!!! I guess a good start would be to hear that they lost their multimillion dollar lawsuit with several major hospitals in California. The other would be to hear that they lost in their problem with the SEC and violating antitrust laws. I don't know the details of the SEC investigation. I do know that about two years ago something caused a red flag which caused the SEC to get involved and they are still investigating the company financials and contracts and such. (I guess I never quite realized how bad this company sucked!)
I hate to say it, but it may be time to get rid of your car...?
BunnyGirl 02-27-2006, 07:20 PM Yeah, I know. :tear: Unfortunately, I am going to have an awfully hard time getting to and from work when I do get a new job without any form of transporation, especially since each place I would have to potentially go to takes at least 1-1/2 hours by bus (the job that starts at 4 a.m. would require me to catch a bus at 11 p.m. and then change several times and then get there around 2:30 a.m. so I would have wasted a significant portion of time to get to work plus be 1-1/2 hours early) and at least three changes and somebody still has to drive me 15 miles to catch the correct bus to start the trip. Otherwise I become responsible for all car maintenance and expenses on my mom's van since it would be being used for her to drive me all over the place, and it would cost twice the gas money since she isn't going to go and sit there all day while I work. My boyfriend would probably let me use his old car or buy it from him since he has offered to let me use it before ($3000 I don't have). However, it is an old falling apart Ford Escort ZX2, so it's not in the best condition for much of anything.
jaguargod 02-27-2006, 07:30 PM Sounds like you have some tough decisions ahead of you. I would start looking for a new job, closer to home, immediately. My wife recently quit her job and started a business, and she is paying herself less than half of what she was making at her job, which is all the business can afford right now.
BunnyGirl 02-27-2006, 07:40 PM Another option is to hope I get flattened by a vehicle when I am checking the mail. Then my mom gets my life insurance money, pays off the bills, and since I have been flattened, I won't have to worry about any of this anymore!!! :)
I have the bad luck to live 13 miles from what is considered "town" and the closest business place that does what I do is 15 miles from home, but not hiring anymore than potentially 10 hours a week at most but I haven't heard back from them at all so I highly doubt it. The only places that are hiring that do what I do are in Portland. The one that pays the most is a little bit closer to me but still a ways away (25-30 miles).
I would do something else altogether but money and bills are such a huge issue that I can't afford to even miss a week of work. Plus, since I don't have a college degree (couldn't afford that at all) I am not likely to find anything that will pay me enough, especially without a significant number of years experience (I've been looking and posted my resume at Monster and another job website). The only thing I know that is going to get me that kind of money involves my body and not my brain so I am in a tough spot again.
Really sucks that I put in the effort to work hard and make the money to try to get ahead and actually have money for stuff. At least then I wouldn't have noticed a change in anything.
dazygirl415 02-27-2006, 07:42 PM evil dazy says, "no comment" :)

Move to the socialist state north of the border!
Marry rich! You're what, 25? Should be no problem unless you're ugly or something.
NoTears316 02-27-2006, 08:25 PM Really sorry about your situation. That sucks. Just remember, things always get worse before they get better. Just hang in there, things have a way of working themselves out.
BunnyGirl 02-27-2006, 08:25 PM Nope!!! I'm totally adorable!!!! :)
jisoo26 02-27-2006, 08:29 PM Nope!!! I'm totally adorable!!!! :)

jisoo26 02-27-2006, 08:38 PM Don't think that far yet, we need to see what Provi and Legacy say first! :p: As for me, I can still think about it :aroused: LOL j/k
BunnyGirl 02-27-2006, 08:41 PM Back away from the Bunny!!!
dupa12345 02-27-2006, 08:43 PM Just start sending them random bills for shit .. there was a whole bunch of ppl that did that to the DOD and walked away with thousand if not millions. I'd start with your car payments so you can keep it in case you decide to run them over later.

gonnahanvan8 02-28-2006, 07:21 PM Hey Bunny,
I haven't read exactly every post, so forgive me if this has benn asked.... Can you do what you do on your own? I mean without the company you currently work for? It seems you can do your work for anybody anywhere in the country. You have the skills, and I would expect you know people in the industry that you could build a network out of. I know several people that make a great living doing work that comes from all over the place, most of them they have never met in person. Anyway, just a thought, hope everything works out for you.....
BunnyGirl 02-28-2006, 07:49 PM I could. I am just missing all the money required to buy my own equipment and start up fees involved at this time.
NoTears316 02-28-2006, 08:07 PM Well... if you were a guy, it would apply, but you get the point.

gonnahanvan8 02-28-2006, 08:51 PM I guess I don't understand what the start up fees would be?. Perhaps it's something you could start working at in your off time. I know it takes a large comitment to start out on your own, but could you do it while your still working? Is there used equipment that you could get a hold of in the mean time? Is it something you think you could be a sucess at? Maybe get a partner with some financial backing? Again, I don't have a firm grasp, I'm just tossing out some ideas. Are there other that you work with that you could band together with and start your own firm?
BunnyGirl 02-28-2006, 09:57 PM I did find one place that I was looking at getting part time work with a few weeks ago. It would be a minimum outlay of $800 for software and a foot pedal to work for her. The lady that ran this company never did get back to me when the samples she sent me for my test were unable to opened on my computer. She said she would convert them to a different format that I could use in iTunes (definitely not a useful program for my work functions) but she never did despite me emailing her four different times for the new files. I guess she didn't need my help that much. I would then have to also get computer equipment that stores the digital voice files for my use, and another phone line that is dedicated to the digial file storage so that the doctors can call in with their dictation files. The cheapest one I was able to locate was $1800. Then I have to get clients and and train them in how to use the system. I would also be responsible for making sure my system stayed up and running or paying a tech to do repairs and stuff when needed since I am not all that skilled with the computer details of how it works. If my brother hadn't moved to Arizona that would be right up his alley and he would do it probably cheaper than most anyone else. There is also a very old fashion way to do it where you pick up mini cassettes daily or weekly, however the doctor wants to do it. You then listen to them on a tape player with foot pedal (about $200). Then I type it in the software I have (most likely Word). Then I have to print out and organize the work I did, erase the tapes, and return it all. I knew some people that did it that way but they were basically part time workers for a single doctor or a small practice with maybe three doctors in it. They all work for hospitals for the most part or a similar company to what I am currently working for now. If I was going to start a business I would want it to be something completely different than this. For the most part, this job is really easy for me since I have a lot of experience with it. The only difficulties come when I have to learn new account specifics or a new software platform, which slows me down for a week or two making sure I've got it all down.
My mom and I were potentially looking into starting an embroidery business at home last year. I was actually going to help pay for it, figure out how to do a website and all that stuff last spring. She would do most of the work since I was still going to be doing my regular job. We decided to hold off for awhile until I was more caught up in my bills and I had more disposable income. Well, then my pay cuts came, so that got pushed back further. We have a commercial embroidery machine (well the home edition of a commercial machine, which is exactly the same but costs a few thousand less and has one less letter on the end :) ) so we should be able to do it at some point. It wouldn't be substantial money with the small scale we would be operating on. We do a lot of sewing and craft things. I also do hand smocking (don't know if you are familiar with heirloom sewing, but you often see smocking in high-end children's clothing). It takes a while to do but it is relaxing to me. I can't do it fast enough or enough of it to make enough money at it but it would be something to do on small scale. I also do something that everyone around here calls "glitzing," which is where I put crystals and stuff on my clothing, like the underwear pictures I posted a while ago.
If I can fit it into my schedule I could also get a job coaching young children in gymnastics, which doesn't pay very much at all, but I love gymnastics and did it for years. I've been offered a job before doing it, and they guy that offered it to me would hire me.
