View Full Version : I'm scared...hold me.

Now that I've got over 1200 miles on the engine, I'm allowed to take it to the redline. The truth is, I don't feel totally confortable doing so. I can't help but to think that higher revs create more friction and heat and that scares me. I've heard comments that the engine "likes" to be maxed out every now and then and that the engine was designed for high revs. But how can pushing the red line do any good? Don't get me wrong, I love the car and most of the time I'm rowing through the gears around 5000 rpms. My point is how do I get over the "fear" that I'm putting excessive wear and tear on the engine?

Hold me

You buy a car to be driven, wear and tear should be expected, so take it to redline once in a while will be fine. I redline a couple times already. Downshift, speed up to pass lane is the only way to drive in LA traffics! I'm at 1350 miles mark; put about 60-70 miles a day by taking the long way home from work :D

Hold me

I don't think that is safe when you're in your RX8. You need to restrain yourselves with a safety belt to your seat! :p And tie a rock on your right foot so that you can't lift the throttle until it hit redline :D

well Doug, old 13B's as you know meter oil into the combustion chamber onto the apex seals to lubricate them. on the old mechanical units, they'd normally be metering in too much oil at idle, and probably the bare minimum once over redline as a nice kind of trade off. although the RENESIS has it's metering system all nicely refined, using less oil overall with electronic control and what have you, it still probably gets a good bathing when you rip 'er right up there. also, the extra heat and higher revs (with the seals hot and scraping around nice and hard from all that vacuum) help keep the motor clean of potentially dangerous carbon deposits (can be the source of seizure in very old motors).

run 'er up to red, take it into buzzer territory. it was MEANT to be :D

Watchout DeBug, high reving the engine is VERY addictive. But go ahead, stab that pedal!

Absolutely! The engine loves to rev. There's no valve-train thrashing or power drop up that high. Go for it! :)

It's a sportscar so drive it like one. Isn't that why you bought it? Isn't that why Mazda made it?

Wow, what a nice rev limiter our cars have. It does NOT cut fuel. Thank goodness for that. It uses the electronic throttle to cease engine speed inputs. What that means is you can actually ride at the rev limit. How do I know this?...

I was passing a slow-moving pickup this morning on my way to work. I dropped from 6th to 3rd at about 75 mph and made my lane change. Very nice, loud acceleration...for about a second or so. Then the car just stopped accelerating. WTF? I looked down - the needle was planted half-way between 9 and 10. Oops! Shifted to 4th, and we continued skyrocketing. I guess I forgot to mute the music this time around and did not hear the beep. :D :D

Ok, I'm convinced. Anyone in the DFW area know where it's safe to open it up for a spell? I don't want to meet Five-O or recreate a scene from 'Death Race 2000'.

i did that last night on the way home from 65mph... by mistake! first miss shift in this car! i was cruising when the people in front of me started slowing down and i went to shift to fifth as i moved into the left lane which was clear and my hand slipped. engine didn't care care and neither did the tranny. it just slid into 3rd grabbed the revs and took off! amazing amazing car and engine!! got to 80 damn quick then i had to slow again for more traffic and shifted up to 4th and then 5th again for some more sedate cruisin:D

I thougt the cars were rev limited to 9500 RPM?

As for damage, I wouldn't worry about it.

...the dreaded "money shift" (only name i've heard given to it)?? (ie, going too fast for a gear... the wheels spinning the engine)

yes but rev limiter cant control the laws of physics.

basically, his car was going a speed which would spin the engine up to 10k rpm in third gear. i don't know how high a speed it was, but one that the car wouldn't let you attain unless you downshifted one gear too far.

I'm afraid I'm a red line addict, and I have no desire to recover. I redline usually at least once a day. And yes, you can go to 10k rpm. I do it all the time, and I'm not down shifting, just waiting till the last second to shift. As B-nez said, it doesn't cut. It just stops accelerating, but I've gotten good at using that stop point for shifting and reving it to 10k then shifting and keeping a continuous flow of speed gain. Good times. I did upset a cop though. He couldn't catch up to me and was very pissed when I pulled into a resturaunt parking lot and he came in behind me a minute later. I wasn't trying to run, he just never turned on his lights. Fortunatley, there was no ticket issued. Word power... :D

Any day now I'll be locked up for my addiction. This permanent grin on my face can not be legal and/or healthy. I'm also feeling a twitch begging me to get out and drive everywhere.

I Have 1200KM on my 8 and I take it to the redline once in a while. These engines are built to handle that kinda punishment.

I'm not saying to redline all the time, but remember that every car takes it wear and tear. The only way to drop this fear is to push it to the line.

Drive hard

Enjoy

EDIT: BTW..... The engine was testing to withstand up to 14000rpm.
