Why does your bacon suck so much? It's really just ham that wasn't cooked properly and is dried out. :bootyshak

And do you call it Canadian Bacon up there? Or is it just bacon?

BunnyGirl

Well, actually they just call it ham. It is an American thing to call it Canadian Bacon. I was in Kelowna, BC at a restaurant place a few years back that had a pizza special and said I wanted pepperoni and Canadian bacon. The waitress smiled and said "You must be an American, eh?" Clearly my Portland Winter Hawk jersey wasn't a big enough clue, seeing as this restaurant was no more than two blocks from the old arena and the hockey game had just ended. I said I was and she asked if I wanted actual bacon on my pizza or ham, and I told her ham. Then she laughed and said she liked to give Americans a hard time because there is no such thing as Canadian bacon in Canada. It is just ham!!!!

Actually there is such a thing. It's also known as Peameal bacon. It wasn't available in the US until a little while ago. We always took some down to my uncle in the US when we went and visited. I think it's delicous, especially in macaroni and cheese!

I bet that would be great in scalloped potatoes and ham. That is where you slice the potato into thin, less than 1/4 inch, circular/oval slices and put it into a seasoned white sauce with small cubes of ham. You bake it in the oven. When it is done the potato is still a little crunchy. It is soooo good!!!

I kinda want that for dinner tomorrow so I will have to see if I can find some peameal to put in it.

The first I ever heard of "Canadian Bacon" was at Mcdonalds in the states. I ordered a bacon egg mcmuffin and they asked me what kind of bacon I wanted, regular or Canadian. I picked canadian cause she made it sound so exotic. Took on bite and I spit it out immediately. I'm like "this is fvckn ham". Anyways to make a long story short Canadian Bacon sucks balls.

BlueEyes

The US doesn't have Canadian Bacon Darkmaz. You didn't eat Canadian Bacon at McDonalds. Canadian Bacon is Peameal Bacon, but the US can't get Peameal bacon because the FDA wouldn't allow it, so they call ham, Canadian Bacon, which is not right.

I heard that recently, the FDA has allowed real Canadian bacon to be sold to the US.

RedSheDevil

I have found that if you cook bacon on an electric grill such as this with the holes where the grease can fall through. The bacon comes out crisp, straight and zebra striped. Very delicious.

For crispy straight bacon, I make it in the microwave. Mostly because my pans are too small for bacon.

That crap that you AMERICANS invented and labelled "Canadian bacon" actually has nothing to do with Canada! :spank: Don't blame us!Yeah... we call what's in that picture bacon too. You can find it in just about any grocery store in the US (Hormel Bacon sucks, btw).

The stuff we call Canadian Bacon is salted ham "similar" in appearance to peameal bacon (minus the crust); which is why we call it Canadian Bacon (some people don't know or care about the difference).

As for peameal being illegal in the states, that's not entirely true. Peameal is lean pork loin, which is sold here. I've had it and have made it many times in the past (and I've never been to Canada). And while I've never pickled any of the pork loins I've made, I have crusted them with cornmeal.

Someday, when I finally visit your fine country, I'll try the real stuff and see what all the hullabaloo is about. In the mean time, I'll stick to sausage, 'cause I don't really like bacon. :evil_laug
