View Full Version : Big Thanks to the Gulf Forum (Pics Included)
BigOLundh 02-05-2006, 11:37 AM I just wanted to give a big thank you to all the D/FW-Houston forum members that came out to the Install Party yesterday. I had a really great time, and the food and booze was great.
I wanted to give a special thanks to all the people that helped with MS Kit and Sway Bar install on my car. I think we started at 7:30am and didnt get finished until 11pm, wow... thats some dedication right there. I am really greatful for all the help because with out it I know I wouldn't have been able to put these in myself.
Chris, thanks for opening up your home to us and letting us destry your garage. I forgot the bumper at your place. If you want to chunk thats fine, but if not i can pick it up from you at the next meet.
Sam, sorry I couldnt give you a spin in the car after we finished. I was running late for some place i needed to be. Remind me at the next BJs meet, and we'll definetely do it then.
Mark, thanks for coming up from houston to the trunk/bumper swap. Hope you had a good time.
Pics are attached in the replies below. By any chance, if there's a pic of your car that you don't want posted, send me a PM. I need to go zaino that trunk and clean off the wheels. I'll post fresh daytime pics later today.
EDIT: I forgot to mention... While me and Jenkins were driving around that night we saw a white AE86 (or AE85, hard to spot the difference). I almost crapped my pants in excitement. The guy rolled up to us to say hi, seemed pretty nice.

canaryrx8 02-05-2006, 02:51 PM that's awesome, we used to do the same thing back in my mini-truckin' days, we'd start the day with some poor soul and his stock height truck, end it with someone stoked out of his/her mind and driving around scraping frame lol sigh...good times :) (wish I had the funds to join you all, so many things I'd like to do to my 8 but so many things I'm stll having to pay for from my practice marriage....argh..lol)

Str8cold 02-06-2006, 03:44 PM Looks like ya'll were busy as hell, just curious how many cars and mods were you able to get done Saturday?

Sam - insulated center console
EG - exhuast, intake, blacked out markers and headlamps, blacked out emblems...
Mark from Houston - trunk and front bumper swap w/Harry
Shari - Sam looked up her CEL on the scanalyzer, found problem and attempted to correct

jenkins-crew 02-06-2006, 04:10 PM That suck almost as bad as the shagin wagon....
Well, I just talked to them.
They got all the right parts in and they're putting the transmission back together. He said it might be done by the end of today but he's not sure. They want to test drive it before they give it back to me, which I understand.
At most it should be 1 more day.
Str8cold 02-06-2006, 04:31 PM You could look at it this way after driving the Tribute for close to a week once you get your 8 back you will enjoy it that much more.

Pick up the new Z06.Thought about it actually.. It would make a better daily driver than the 8 too cuz it gets better gas mileage..

BigOLundh 02-06-2006, 07:27 PM I think Sam was going to use that for some sort of necklace ornament. Either that or Jenkins has it.

First the cruise which is next month. It's my last hooray before being a penny pincher.
jenkins-crew 02-07-2006, 07:57 AM I will look for it...
Mr. Ed's rx-8 02-07-2006, 01:36 PM thanks. it should be a white USPS box with a bunch of small screws and my chrome VW emblems. i'll be at Rack Daddy's tonight so i can get it then hopefully! call me and let me know.
jenkins-crew 02-07-2006, 05:00 PM I got it. I will bring it with me. I need your new number by the way, I still have your old one.
I just got my car back.
Wow.
I gotta say a few things..
Throttle response with this flywheel is a big difference.
The transmission feels great. 93-94 mph 3-4 shift = no problem at all.
The clutch feels super light and responsive. The friction point is closer to the floor than I had expected so it's gonna take some getting used to.
I could adjust that if I wanted to and I might move it back just a little. I stalled the car pulling out of the lot the first time but not after.
I've gotta say the car just feels so much more alive now. Of course, it's not as noticeable as turbo, but seriously, the difference is there.
Driving at low RPM is still no problem once you know where the new engagement point is. I was able to get the car to roll just fine at 900 rpm like always so the lighter flywheel doesn't seem to be hurting my drivability..
Last 2 things...
Gotta love burnt clutch smell... it smelled pretty good after i did the first run. it started to go away by the time i got home.. new clutches will do that I guess..
My 1 -> 2 shift is gonna have to get faster. It's a combination of the speed at which the flywheel revs up and the fact that the friction point is so close to the floor. Coming out of first, it's obvious that i'm unfamiliar with the freeze point. I'll get used to it.
Woo..
BigOLundh 02-07-2006, 06:37 PM STOP TALKING!!!
Dang it... now i have to go upgrade.
I hate you
:(
Mr. Ed's rx-8 02-07-2006, 07:43 PM i wanna run you now harry....>:)
STOP TALKING!!!

:(Haha..
Well worth it in your case, especially the clutch.. the flywheel you may not notice as much cuz you have turbo but there's no way you can miss the clutch..
Then again, 20% drivetrain loss is much more noticeable when you have more horsepower than less.. I may have freed up 5-10 horsies whereas you may free up 20-30.. No way to know w/o dynoing.
BigOLundh 02-07-2006, 08:07 PM i wanna run you now harry....>:)huh? Are you challenging me to a foot race? if so... LETS GET IT ON!!!

I think the lightened flywheel will make some of the turbo lag less noticeable, not like with a small turbo i really have much... but there's still some. The clutch is needed so i can get a good launch.
I never really thought about the hp improvement... this would be an interesting experiment. TO THE DYNO!!! <insert batman theme>

I never really thought about the hp improvement... this would be an interesting experiment. TO THE DYNO!!! <insert batman theme>Well, think about it.. The stock flywheel is like 22lbs. The streetlite is 13.5. That means it weighs 39% less than stock. You can't attribute 100% of that to the drivetrain loss but definitely some. You're going to see some power return. Honestly though, the most noticeable thing is the throttle response and smoothness of the revs.
The mass is also more evenly distributed rather than just thrown everywhere so that also will attribute to smoother revving and smoother running.
It's definitely nice.
Excuse me while I make excuses to drive.. To the store!! WOO!!
BigOLundh 02-07-2006, 11:38 PM My response is in the BJs thread
