View Full Version : Wankel Motorcycle?
Rootski 01-30-2006, 09:15 PM This is a really bizarre topic, and probably 99% hypothetical, but my friend is looking into buying a motorcycle and somehow we got the idea of buying a scrapped RX-7 and a used bike big enough to hold a 1300cc engine, and stuffing the RX-7 engine into it. Is this even possible? I'm interested to hear what you guys think of this idea.
Rhawb 01-30-2006, 09:31 PM Haha, I wonder if you could just crank on the power, hold on tight and do a backflip. Talk about ludicrous speed! You might even go to plaid! :Eyecrazy:

dmorales 01-30-2006, 11:22 PM Norton f1 had a rotary. It was a pretty good looking sportbike also.
And no I don't think your idea will work. Think of how hard it will be to mount it! Where are you going to put mounts on engine? How are you going to cool the thing? That's a lot of heat, muchless between your legs. And what about a moto trans that will mate without serious modifications? Plus, a rotary engine is small and light, but only in terms of cars. That would make a freaking heavy bike!

Darkrose 01-31-2006, 07:36 AM They have bikes with a freakin' V6 on board, why not the Wankel? :dunno:
Asmoran 01-31-2006, 08:15 AM That's a specially designed V6. They didn't pull one out of a mustang and put it in a bike.

Might be cheeper to find one of the old bikes in the above thread and update the motor?
You could also see if you can get a frame from http://www.v8bikes.com/ and fab a way to mount a Renesis
bascho 01-31-2006, 03:58 PM They make motorcycles with Chevy 350cid engines.

A 13B RE would be a lot lighter than a V8. I think one of their bikes has a 502cid

That is a sweet ride.....I wish I could ride it just once.
dmorales 01-31-2006, 05:01 PM I think the only thing with having a rotary motorcycle is being able to say "I have a rotary powered motorycycle!"
You would have a much faster and more powerful motorcycle if you just bought a gixxer 1000 and modded. Heck you wouldn't even have to mod it really. If you wanted to go really big you go Turbo or NOS.

Rotary Rasp 01-31-2006, 05:22 PM I bet it would still get 12mpg...lol
Someone built a motorcycle using a Ford flathead V8 so you should be able to do it.

The whole point of it IS to say you have a rotary powered motorcycle. It's not about making a faster better bike than what is out there.
I think it would be cool. You'd need more space for cooling than for the motor though.
djgiron 02-01-2006, 09:15 AM There used to be rotary powered snowmobiles, i wish they would to that again :)
j-apex rx 02-01-2006, 11:17 PM I seen rotary jetski in puerto rico and Dominican republic , john deere company us to makes litttle tractors.http://www.freedom-motors.com/
Rotorpsycho 02-02-2006, 07:19 PM Norton f1 had a rotary. It was a pretty good looking sportbike also.
I have seen one of these in the flesh when I used to race GP250 motorcycles here in Christchurch NZ... maybe 5 or 6 years ago.
From memory it was an ass to start (they used another motor to crank the rear wheel over in a high gear) but when it did fire up its a sound I have never forgotten.....mean as
It wasnt blindingly quick, but it was sooo freakin cool (and this was before I owned a rotor myself)

The owner said it was fast.

That's the one, the Suzuki RE-5 Rotary was sold here around 1975, for a few years, single rotor 497cc (similar to a 10A R100/RX-3 cut in two), not a sales success, don't recall its reliability, come to think of it, excess heat from an inefficient cooling system was an issue, like anyone who want to do any type of Rotary Transplant......keeping coolant temps LOW!
It was a very fast 2 wheeler.
Did you guys have them in the US, Obviously not
globi 02-11-2006, 07:06 PM About 3 month ago I passed a Suzuki RE-5 on I-95 near Boston. (So I guess that means that they must have them in the US.)

I would have really like to see that. I guess that would be a pain to have to start. I've seen a couple for sale...I was just curious :), and I found one for sale in England for $18,000 US!
That would be "cool" if a company made another rotary moto but I think heat would be a hard problem to solve.

djgiron 02-12-2006, 05:05 AM I have a buddy that put an FC turbo motor in a sandrail, that thinks is insanely fast!
djgiron 02-12-2006, 05:06 AM Oh, forgot to post this, there are 2 RE-5's on ebay right now, one is for $1,995 buy it now.
Technochick 02-12-2006, 05:19 PM Oh, forgot to post this, there are 2 RE-5's on ebay right now, one is for $1,995 buy it now.NOOOO! Oh, the temptation! I don't need another motorcycle. I'm finally back down to two.
Hrmph! Why'd you have to go and post something like that? I'm a motorcycle shop-o-holic
Edit:Whew, the buy it now one is gone and I'm rationalizing not buying the other one because I already have an orange bike. Really ..... oh, I'm just going to look one more time.

Technochick 02-12-2006, 08:16 PM I want another bike.
I need a three car garage to store bikes, tools spare parts and my RX8. I'm in big trouble when I start modding her too.
