View Full Version : Sweet Sounding New Exhaust-12#!
Hi Flying 8 01-26-2006, 03:29 PM I just had a new custom exhaust built and installed for my 8 that people
(including myself) have said is the best sounding rotary they have heard. Built by 3R Racing in Colorado, it is all stainless steel with a Burns muffler to quiet it. 3R uses these mufflers on their SCCA World Challenge GT Vipers. The muffler and exhaust pipe (Cat-Back) came in at 12 pounds and added 7 HP and 5 ftlb. Dyno results, pics and sound are available at [EMAIL=3rauto.com]3 R is making these available at prices that will probably be lower than what I paid for my one-off unit. If interested contact Chris Dorsey at 3R ( SEB Board Member and Former EP Natl Champ).
BTW, the actual sound is a little deeper than the sound byte.
At last week's autox, I had the best performance that I have ever had, taking 978 pax points. This is about 17 points higher than my previous best. The torque seems to come on much stronger at around 3K rpm. Just enough to edge out my son in his ASP 93 RX-7TT in Paxed times and just behind Bob Klingler (Last year's AS # 5 Trophy winner and day #2's FTD at Natls)!
ULLLOSE 01-26-2006, 04:15 PM Nice work... My system with a Borla muffler is about 17lbs. We have one place we run with a 93db limit so I went with the bigger Borla because the guys at Burns thought there unit would be to loud.
3R does some nice work.
I will get to meet Chris next Fri, we are on the same flight from CO to the SCCA convention.
Hi Flying 8 01-26-2006, 05:12 PM Yea, the site we ran at last week had the same 93 db limit, also. I ran 91.0, 91.7,92.1 and 93.7. We are going to put a 90 degree tip with a clamp that will allow the sound to be directed away from the sound meter. 3R has to do this with their Vipers at Portland where they have a limit and it works well. It is pretty close now.
The HP and torque numbers may look strange, but these are a mile above sea level!
mysql101 01-26-2006, 06:10 PM so uh. Where's the sound clip? :)
Hi Flying 8 01-26-2006, 06:19 PM The sound clip is on the 3R website, [EMAIL=3rauto.com]
You may need to download apple quick time. It is all available on that website.
moRotorMotor 01-26-2006, 07:19 PM It sounds really good! It doesn't sound raspy at all. Do you guys notice a change in sound at around 2000-3000rpm? I love everything so far except that the tip is not aligned and it is a single exhaust. How heavy would it be if another canister was added to the existing design? I'm interested going with this company.
TeamRX8 01-26-2006, 08:14 PM uh yeah, I built and ran one last year, mine weighs 9#, where do you think they got the idea from ... another canister weighs 3 - 4 lbs but the pipe it replaces weighs about 1 lb, so 2 - 3 lbs net
http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=922293&postcount=47
it probably weighs 8 lb now after I eliminated all the clamps I used to assist with the initial adjustment and setup. I hope you got the stainless scrubble packing option, the ceramic packing won't last long with the rotary heat
Hi Flying 8 01-27-2006, 11:37 AM Yes, I got the stainless steel packing. After driving rotaries for over thiry years, I realized the damage that the exhaust heat can do.
Does the weight you state for your exhaust include the pipe from the cat as well as the muffler and tip or just the muffler and tips?
TeamRX8 01-30-2006, 09:48 PM the entire piece from the rear cat converter flange
You got yours with SS scrubble, but is that what they're selling? I don't see a price anywhere either. One of the reasons I didn't bother offering them for sale is IMO there wouldn't be much demand relative to the cost that would need to be charged to make it worth my while.
Silverarrow 01-30-2006, 10:33 PM maybe i'm retarded but i couldn't find the soundclip anywhere on that site...hmmph
visitor 01-31-2006, 02:13 AM that website is a piece of shit, here it is: http://3rauto.com/gallery_folder/rx8_exhaust/rx8_exhaust.html

You need something that can play mp4s (like QuickTime)
It sounds nice but I still prefer stock
Oh and I don't see anything wrong with the website

Yes, they are selling the SS because they know the heat that the rotary puts out.
I'm not sure what they will sell them for as they built mine custom and used it as a template. That's why anyone interested should call them. I agree that the market is hard to determine because a lot of people won't pay for the quality. Your dual exhaust setup looks to be a good idea, but why are you using three mufflers instead of just two?
TeamRX8 01-31-2006, 11:10 PM the dual exhaust street system I was planning to build has died on the vine; I picked up a used Ti system for less than it was going to cost to build the other so it didn't make sense to proceed with it.
My STU setup will initially have two inline 3" mufflers , but due to the high flow cat and large pipe size I'm not sure of it will sufficiently dampen the noise level. The RX-8 exhaust noise level increases substantially with both changes. If not, a third muffler inline with the other two may be required. It will still be a single pipe system.
RX8SpdDmn 02-01-2006, 12:57 PM how much is it gonna cost?
TeamRX8 02-01-2006, 01:39 PM I'd guess at least the $500 range based on my knowledge of the costs and making it worth their while profit-wise

That sucks... I'm hoping that it would come in at under $400 due to it's simplicity. They'd sell a crap load of 'em! Come on, 3R, bring it out cheap and you'll profit on volume!
I'd still like to find out from them how much it'll cost, for sure...
NoCones 02-02-2006, 01:02 PM I emailed and asked.
Try $850. Maybe less if they get some volume.

WOW... Small shops big prices.. TriPoint charged on of the locals out here $800 for a single system.
You can get this done at any shop for well under $300. My system was under $200 with a borla, built it myself. You can order all the U bends, the Burns muffler then go to Midas and tell them what to do.

I did the same thing, but went to Speedy instead. :p (And it passes sound quite beautifully I might add)
About this original post, I e-mailed the company that's making them, and I found out that in the things 1st use, it got dinged for sound violation and they're going to make a turn-down to help decrease the noise at the sound meter on course.
That doesn't necessarily mean that it's quiter.
If you run in a region that has strict sound, this exhaust may not be for you (the one at the topic of this thread). New England is one such region like that. 90 db at 75 feet. Over once? DNF and Fix it. Over again? Have a nice day.

The Burns is over $200 by itself and good stainless adds up quickly, so it would definitely be a lot higher than $300. But if you have the skills and contacts to do it, it would be worthwhile. Still better to have it made so it doesn't rattle, fall off, twist, or crack IMHO.

Yea, I registered from 91, 91.5, 91.7, 92.1 and 93.7 with the meter about 30 feet away and pointing straight at the exhaust as I exited a slalom. The Dnf on the last one might just have been the wind blowing the wrong way.
We are going to try a slotted 90 degree elbow which we can rotate away from wherever the meter is on a particular day. 3R does this on their World GT Vipers at Portland where they have sound limits and it has worked for them, so I anticipate no problems. Only a couple of events are at a site that has sound limits, so I can just leave it off for most events, which is great so I can listen to that great sounding Renesis! :ylsuper:

Tell me, how does that keep the sound down at a site that has neighbors that want the site gone because of the sound? You're not doing anyone any favors when you do something like that, if anything accellerating the loss of the sites. At our region, if that were the case, you'd be asked to never come back, it's that bad.
A race track is no different, but it's a race track and you can kind of expect there to be noise. Auto-x uses available lots, with many more neighbors.
Do your region a favor, and make it legal no matter where the meter is. If you don't, that's how lots disappear and in the very least make it difficult to aquire new ones.
An in the Acura above... fat lot of good that did him when he blew his engine on a run.

TeamRX8 02-03-2006, 02:11 AM I made the same argument while on the SEB and it fell on deaf ears. If they *really* want to do sound enforcement then you need two meters, one on both sides of the course that the cars pass by simultanously to eliminate the noise direction games. What it really comes down to is nobody takes sound enforcement seriously. It's just a tool to say you're doing what you can to address it. While I understand KC's sentiment, IMO you can't blame the competitors from doing whatever it takes to pass. It's the organizer's responsibility to to implement methods that minimize or avoid circumvention.

I think you're awfully presumptuous to state that I'm putting our site at peril. Our chiefs are more than adequate at taking care of it themselves. If you saw above, there was only one time that I was above the limit-the others were comfortably below and that was at a much shorter distance of thirty feet than your requirement of 75. That distance would have left me well below your limits.
A turndown will also allow me to direct the flow to the ground rather than out to the open air. With a good distance between our site and the closest housing, I feel confident that it won't create any difficulties. If it does, our region will definitely keep me from running until a substantial improvement is made. They, however, didn't feel that that was necessary because it was consistently below the limit.
If i'm wrong, I'll be big enough to let you know so that you can get back up on your soap box.
No apologies here. Sound is a big issue facing many regions. It's up to those that participate that need to make sure they're doing their part, while they still can.
Sorry to see you got your panties in a bunch over a problem that affects most of us out here with losing sites, or not being able to get quality sites.

TeamRX8 02-03-2006, 08:50 PM You both make good points; this matchup is a draw... :cwm27:
ULLLOSE 02-20-2006, 10:38 AM I got a DB reading on my system at yesterdays event..... 88.9 db @ 50'. That was the peak reading in 1st gear flat out past the meter. They had it just after the first turn in a long strait. Also went by it in 2nd gear one run and the reading was a tad lower.
