I've been driving mine w/out a plate now for a week now and there are no problems to report. I know that there are no points involved if you are charged, but does anyone know how much the fine is if you are?

If my car ever shows up, I'll not be running a front plate... unless it becomes a major problem.

I'm running with both plates. I purchased personalized plates for the car so I might as well make use of the money I spent on them.

I'll probably be running with both plates (at least for now).... being the proud owner of a recent large speeding ticket, i'm not looking to get pulled over...

I got snagged in September. OPP already had someone pulled over, must have been finished. Pulled me over about 5km later.
"I see you don't have a front plate"
I pulled it from the pass. floor and said "It's right here" - and hopped out and ty-wrapped it on. Well, it wasn't on when I saw you, says.

I asked a buddy who has an OPP father, who said that there is no way out of that ticket.

Anyway - took it to first appearance court, and beat it. Tell you how if you need.

I've been driving for months with the license plate jammed behind the windshield on the passenger's side. Haven't been pulled over yet.

I've been driving in downtown TO for almost 2 years now without a front plate on my car. Since their are no holes in the bumper (the grill is where is bolts too), It looks alot better without it.
I was only stopped on one ocassion ( twice in the same day about a year ago) both times they let me off, as I had it in the trunk, and informed them that I was on my way to an exam (which I was). If you think of it as a "modification" then to pay one ticket or two, justifies the removal.

i live in woodstock, in the summer i started seeing tons and tons of cars with no plates on the front, so i took mine off, ive had cops wave to me, they dont seem to care i dont have it on the front, i think thats a crummy law, if there is one on the back, then i think it should be ok. You dont put the sticker on the front plate, so whats the real importance of having it?

Just got pulled over yesterday for the second time in almost 3 years. Ticket is $110. Might put it back on this time. Both times I was pulled over was more because I caught their attention and that was the only thing they could find to give me a ticket for (neither time was for speeding). The first time I just had to prove it was back on the vehicle and they dropped the ticket, I don't think they will do that a second time

Ya, mine was the same deal, pulled over for no plate. I just think they were bored outta there tree that night. Both cops in one car get out and start drilling me, I said the mount had broken off or something, showed them the plate as i pulled it outta my back seat. 72 hours to show I had it back on. Next time is definitely some moula, not sure about points tho.

I agree with rockstar, its not worth the hassell.

I dont think risking increasing insurance (yes insurance will take it into account when rating your insurance) moreso, just getting a 100+ dollar ticket.

This car looks so much better without the front plate. I took mine off ( BB 2005 ). I managed about a month and a half, I had no alternative but to pull in behind a marked cruiser at a red light. The Officer looked back, i even attempted to sneak up a bit on his bumper to cut off his view. No such luck, the big wave over. He wrote up the ticket, said just make sure it's < plate > is on when I show up for court and he would drop the charge.
Cost of ticket was $ 98.00 or so with a $ 25.00 victims surcharge. Total was right about what one of the previos posters said $ 125.00
Went to court 8 months later, same cop is there, he had about 6 or 7 of us " no plate guys " must be a pet peeve of his. To his credit however, proof it was back on the front - didn't even physically look - took my word for it. Dropped ticket. My experience, not worth the hassle and not sure they will continue to drop the charge.

Darn, sure looks good without though !

Stupid Ontario has to have an archaic law about front plates, most states dont require plates in the front some provinces are like that here

[knee-jerk reponse]: how on earth does one jusitfy a victim surcharge on this? Who is the victim from not having a front plate?

I think we all agree it looks better, but I can't justify the expense of a ticket. Thinking of it as a 'mod' is just flushing money down the toilet. However, I liked the idea someone posted a while ago about modifying a plate mount to the lower (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=38156) side of the air dam; looks nice, and restores the 8's grin.

I have a plate, but i put it in the mouth of the Mazdaspeed front bumper.

I still remember a cop pulled me over last year. I rolled down my window and he asked for my lic and reg. After giving it to him I asked... " so why did you pull me over?". He replied... " i don't understand whats so COOL about not putting your front license plate on sports cars!"

I told him to take another look. It was there, it was just covered by tinted plate covers. The expression on his dumb face was priceless.

He just wanted to meet his qouta, and was pulling people over... looking for a reason to meet it ...

Here are a few pictures of our front plate. We reduced it to the minimum. I got a speeding ticket and still had no problem with the plate. Maybe he thought $300.00 was enough tax for one day. We went to the local OPP and they said it was okay.

hmm.. if thats the size why not move it down out of the grill, onto the "lip" of the bumper underneath.. it would fit? IMO would look better...

Right-o. You're not even supposed to have one of the clear blue ones.

Like a lot of you are saying, the car looks nice without the plate. But it's pretty cheezy to gripe about being pulled over and ticketed when you are knowingly breaking the law.

true, but it is for something so small and stupid, You dont need the fron plate for anything, the sticker, (unless a truck) goes on the back, all the highway shots are of your back plate, i dont understand the reason behind having one?

I've been driving my boosted Miata for years with no front plate.
Had about 2 tickets over that term.
It's worth it in my opinion.
I'd spend more to make the car look better anyway, and the plate ruins the good looks of the car.

Still deciding on my RX8 since it's a daily driver.
If the MS body kit goes on I'll have to drive plateless.
That front end would look bad with a plate.

Maybe an offset plate bracket would be a good idea.
Does anyone make one for the 8?

The section of the HTA on my ticket says:
...
Permit requirements
7. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless,
(a) there exists a currently validated permit for the vehicle;
(b) there are displayed on the vehicle, in the prescribed manner,
(i) number plates issued in accordance with the regulations showing the number of the permit issued for the vehicle, or ...

I told the prosecutor that I complied with 7.1, 7.1a, but arguably 7.1b. I told him that the officer stated that the dashboard was not the place for my plate, so I asked him to clarify 7.1.b - i.e. tell me the "prescribed manner". He looked through the HTA for 3 or 4 minutes, mumbled "It's in here somewhere", but could not find it. Asked me if the plate was back on the front (yes), so wrote "dismissed" on the ticket and sent me on my way.

Happy to hear that. I came across this forum via goggle when I was searching for input on what the ramifications I might have to deal with if I go without a front plate.

I've placed an order for an AM V8 Vantage and wasn't keen on installing a front plate.

Somebody had commented that Insurance companies might look at "tickets" for no plate in a negative way? Is this true? I figured they only looked at the normal stuff - - accidents, speeding, careless driving etc. Thank you!

First, welcome to our club.
If you're buying a Vantage I'm going to assume that you can afford a 'no plate' ticket. Sometimes it's not a bad idea to have a 'technical violation' if you get pulled over. If the cop is feeling generous he can reduce the charge on the spot to a plate violation and send you on your way. I don't think that insurance companies will hold the plate thing against you. Just tell them someone stole it!

I guess I should at this point encourage you to take an '8 out for a test drive.

Firstly, Thanks for the reply and the input. As for affording the Ticket, barely, as I've spend all the pennies on the car :)

Always been a fan of all cars, I think the '8 is always been a car ahead of it's time. I've been enjoying reading through many of the posts on this forum.

On a aside, was curious why certain words get hyper linked? i.e Motor vehicle & test drive . . Is this how bills are paid on the forum, just curious. Thank you.

same prob in BC....I was told that when using the laser guns they need a highly
reflective surface to get a good speed reading, so they are trained to aim for the
headlights and license plate.....they hate NA Miatas with flip-down lights and no plate....lol...no target

Hey everyone.

I got pulled over a week ago, I live in Vancouver. That officer was actually nice, he just said "put it back on, take a photo, dispute the ticket, then show me the photo in court, then I will drop my charge". So my beautiful WB-8 is now cruising around town, with an fugly plate at the front. The ticket's $109, phew ~ lucky that I don't have to pay that ...

Here's a trick. I was playing around with the front plate one day and relized that if you remove the mount, you can bend the top and bottom edges of the plate back so that just the numbers are showing. Then you can put the bolts back into the holes for the mount(leaving the mount off) thread them, but not tight. The plate will slide right into place with the part of the plate that is bent behind the bolts. now tighten down the bolts and the plate is held inplace and is much narrower and you can't see the bolts. It looks much better (looks european). I did this a year ago and had no problems, I even checked with a Cop, he said its fine :ylsuper: . I have Pics if you want to see.

So the plate is up against the paint?

Quick7
02-28-2007, 03:57 PM
Not at all, it's up against the black plastic mesh grill, the same place where the mounting bracket usually is. If, by chance, any rubbing where to happen, the plate is smooth where it rests on the grill. I'll try and dig up the pictures to post. I've had no problems with the set up.

Just another word of warning to those without front plates in Ontario....the cops WILL ticket you.

Saw a terrible sight last night on Queen Street, in downtown Toronto.

It was about 2:45am and the cops had pulled over a sweet looking Porsche GT (the super car!). The owner was seriously only about my age (30).

I had been watching from the bar I was in and it hadn't looked like he'd been doing anything wrong. The cop sat in his car for literally 30 minutes, don't know what he was doing. He was still there when I was leaving.

Anyway long story short I asked the GT driver why the cop had pulled him over.
Answer: no front plate. $110 ticket.

Seemed to me like the cop was just begrudging the man his supercar, but what can you do eh?

Hahahah.... maybe when we colonise Mars. The way McSquinty's gov. are going on a witch hunt on all modified cars, the chance of having rear plates are nigh on improbable.
