I got to test drive a RX-8 and Evo yesterday.
RX-8:
Very smooth tranny, shifts, and clutch. The engine really purrs. Steering and handling are incredibly precise. I think some of the interior parts are average, but the gauges are very nice. I would prefer more headroom and more trunk space. I have also driven a G35 Coupe, and between the two I think I would pick the G35 Coupe because it is more luxurious and I like the exterior looks a bit better than the RX8.
Evo:
I had to lie to test drive. I acted like I was going to trade in my M3. The salesman thought my car had a V6 Turbo. He didn't understand that BMWs are NA, and the only car that has forced induction is the Cooper S. He said "I don't see any BMW badges on the Mini..." Anyways, he started out at $8500 for my car for a trade in. I told him I'll sell it on my own. After 30 min. of discussions, I got it up to $16k. I would still rather have my car, and I want to pay it off before I get rid of it.
The steering wheel was shaking at idle, and the salesman couldn't explain why. He said "It's a rally car...Have you ever owned one..." I said that the steering wheel shouldn't be shaking on a brand new car. I thought that the steering was more precise on the RX-8.
I felt like I was flying above 5K rpms. I didn't get to push the RX-8 because I was on small roads, and there was traffic. I didn't rev it up above 5k rpms, and didn't go above 50 mph. I revved up the Evo up to redline, and got up to 70 mph. So, I couldn't really tell the difference between the two in terms of straightline acceleration.
Conclusion:
Both cars are great for the price, but I wouldn't buy either. I like my M3 (100,000 miles) more. I would pick a used S4 or a G35 Coupe over both just because I enjoy luxury more than speed. Between the two, I would pick the Evo, because there is more headroom and trunk space, and because it's faster straightline.
