View Full Version : Suspension parts for traction
rkostolni 12-11-2005, 11:19 PM Has anyone found any suspension components that help with straight line traction? I know RB's sway bars are suppose to help with wheel hop, but I'm not really getting wheel hop, more just loss of traction. I am planning to upgrade to some wider rear tires, probably 245 in the rear, Pirelli P-zero's, but has anyone found any suspension mods that can also help?
RX4life 12-13-2005, 07:37 AM slicks... :)
better tires are your best bet... wider helps too i guess..

Red Devil 12-13-2005, 08:43 AM 275 and it appears without modification to the fenders...that's sick. I was hoping to run an 8.5 in the front and 255's all around. Even better...
carbonRX8 12-13-2005, 10:33 AM Yes, there is no modification to the fenders. I haven't put these on yet (in fact, they have not even been delivered) but including Goodwin, others here have. That is nearly eleven inches of rubber (up from 8.9). Like hp and displacement, nothing beats sticking like more rubber. Then stick some r-compounds on and you could hang on a wall.
Red Devil 12-13-2005, 11:07 AM Should work very well with the forced induction applications, but still keeping the car balanced - as their website states. I like these wheels, too. I think they've just moved to the top of my list.

Xyntax 12-14-2005, 11:28 AM Check JIC website. I saw something there for the RX-8 that was called "Traction bar" or something. It connects to the rear control arms I think. Someone posted a link here back then, but I can't find it anymore.

adrian-1 12-14-2005, 12:53 PM Found the traction bar on vividracings site. (http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/17_18_648_2945/products_id/10120). I wonder if it works.
Red Devil 12-14-2005, 12:58 PM I saw the traction bars before also. But would adding this part sacrifice too much of the play within the suspension. In other words, can we have this part and still go to the track, not just the drag strip?
Adrian, are you having any issue with wheel hop or traction at the strip?
adrian-1 12-14-2005, 01:21 PM Adrian, are you having any issue with wheel hop or traction at the strip?
Wheelhop rarely.
Traction issues, yes. I'm launching at 6-7krpms and if you let out the clutch too fast, you'll just spin the tires and go nowhere. If you let out too slow, it'll bog down and the rpms will drop down to 3k. My best 60ft time has been 2.0sec. That was feathering the clutch til it got traction then flooring it.
My rear tires are 245/45/17's on a 17x8 rim. I'm looking into getting some 275/40/17 drag radial tires put on a 17x9 rim. Should help get traction, but not sure if the tranny can handle it.
Xyntax 12-14-2005, 02:00 PM What I don't understand is why are RX-8's having too much traction problem when we don't even run 300HP yet. Most cars that have more than that can run fine without going with wider rear tires. Hell, even FWDs aren't this problematic.
rkostolni 12-14-2005, 03:20 PM Its all in the design of the suspension. The 8 just wasn't designed to need to put 300hp to the ground. My brothers 91 mustang has 280 to the wheels and he had to modify a lot of the suspension to be able to hook up halfway decently. Yet a brand new cobra easily puts 350 to the wheels with no problem. The suspension just needs to be designed for it.
Red Devil 12-14-2005, 03:47 PM A good place to look would be what the Puerto Rican's are using that have their high hp Renesis and 20B engines put power to the ground.
rkostolni 12-15-2005, 12:05 PM Looked into which tires would get better traction and it looks like the Pirelli Pzero M&S isn't the way to go. They are a good all around tire, but not meant for those that are primarily concerned with performance. It looks like either the Bridgestone Pole Position tires or the Nitto 555 tires will give the best traction on dry ground.
Xyntax 12-15-2005, 12:40 PM Check out that BF Goodrich GForce semi-slicks. I remember that white 1000 HP street-driven Supra had those for the rear. It was daily-driven too!

Wow - that looks awesome - what suspension setup are you going to run with this?
carbonRX8 12-15-2005, 03:21 PM Wow - that looks awesome - what suspension setup are you going to run with this? Currently I only have RB sways. I am torn between the Tein Flex and the JIC coil overs (the name of which I can not remember at the moment). I have some time to make a desision, but will likely make one by March, in fact, these rims likely will not go on the car until March. As for set up, I will not lower the car much and if I do it will only be for "feel and performance" and not for looks. I cant wait and I am sorry I cant give an impression until then. Oh, and the tires will be Goodyear F1 eagles. I am leaning towards the 275s and will likely go with those unless I determine there is a major weight jump from the 265s to the 275s.
