View Full Version : Redline warning chime
TJRX8 07-29-2003, 09:44 AM I haven't heard the chime yet and have hit redline a few times. For those that have heard it, is it real faint that I might not hear it? Or might it be turned off and I don't know it? Or is it just that I was too mesmerized by the sound of the engine at 9 Grand I didn't notice it???:D

boowana 07-29-2003, 09:47 AM I had the same experince. I didn't hear the warning chime. I am going to mention it when I get my first check up at the dealers.
For those who have heard it, is it loud enough? Thanks.
Ya, it's loud enough to hear. I hit it once (accidentally) while I was passing someone. Didn't mean to, as I only have about 350 miles on the engine...
it's quite audible while watching the short video clips in the J-Spec 8's...maybe they reduced the volume and/or took it out completely (which of course is becoming a common trend in the A-Spec versions)?
rotary_it_up 07-29-2003, 10:27 AM I can hear mine, but it is VEEERY faint. You have to really listen for it, but it IS there. I can't hear it in third gear due to the increased interior noise, but you should be able to hear it in first and second.
I wish it was louder. I was a little disappointed when I first went to redline. It is really useless as is, due to the inaudibility.
eccles 07-29-2003, 10:43 AM It is quite quiet. I'm glad it's not as blaring and intrusive as the ones on my old RX-3's and RX-7's, but I think it could do with being a little louder. Perhaps the beeper is just badly positioned for LHD - it seems louder from the passengers seat (which would of course be the drivers seat in Japan.)
MrWigggles 07-29-2003, 11:03 AM With the stereo on a medium volume, I could barely here it during my test drive. I think I hit it in second gear.
It should be louder if it is there at all. Put on a racing helmet and you can forget about hearing it all together.

alarabie 07-29-2003, 11:13 AM Hit it this morning, it's faint, I dunno if I would hear it over the radio.
zoom44 07-29-2003, 11:16 AM and how many peopel are going to 9k this morning just to hear the chime?:D damn i wish my car would get here so i could do that test!;)
rx8daniel 07-29-2003, 11:26 AM I hit 9K at least twice last w/e at 'The Gap' -windows open, no stereo, no helmet, sunroof open, 2nd gear. I've heard 1st gen buzzers - if there is a 'buzzer' it is not what I expected. If it's a chime and I just can't hear it, it's useless. IMHO mine is not working. Have hit it 3 times total at least and no buzzer or chime.
p.s. zoom44 - I was just looking for the thread about 1st pre-orders who haven't received their car yet - are you the only one still RX-8-less?
TracyP 07-29-2003, 11:31 AM I heard it on the car I test drove, but it was VERY faint and I missed it the first time. I don't know. The one on my third gen is much louder. Does anyone know if something can be done to increase the volume?
red_rx8_red_int 07-29-2003, 11:54 AM I thought that, although the redline is 9000, the buzzer doesn't come on until around 9200 and the fuel cuts out at about 9500. For the people that heard the buzzer, is it at 9000 or another RPM?
alarabie 07-29-2003, 12:27 PM I was over 9000 when it sounded, I would say at about 9300.
pelucidor 07-29-2003, 12:57 PM With stereo off and windows closed I could hear it in first at 8500rpm, but barely hear it in 2nd (at 8500rpm again) due to louder road noise etc. I didn't try to redline in third or above during my test drive.

yep supposed to be this week... no word yet:(
B-Nez 07-30-2003, 05:40 AM Well I, for one, loved the grating buzzer in the RX-7. I'll be sad if the buzzer/beeper in my car is quiet - 550 miles to go...
TreknMazda 07-30-2003, 07:37 AM Not quite ready to test the chime but I thought it was supposed to be at 8500rpm to "remind you to shift" not at engine cutoff above 9200rpm. Or does it sound twice? If not, I would have the car checked to find out why the warning is not happening before 9000rpm. Calibration error:confused:
It could be that the chime was 'enhnaced' in the track video, too. Or maybe the video microphone happended to be near the source of the chime.

The chime starts at 8500 RPM's in my car.

I have now been up in the 9k range and have yet to hear the Joy Buzzer.

Actually, it's more like a "peep" than a BEEP. It's almost apologetic.
pelucidor 07-30-2003, 12:30 PM Also it stays on continuously whilst you are above 8500rpm up to fuel cutoff at 9500rpm. That could be why some think it starts at a higher rpm - by the time they look at the tach upon hearing the peep it has already moved to 9000+ rpm.

LMAO!!!!
Damn that is funny sh*t!!!!
The beep is all but drowned out by the engine.......you almost most have to strain to hear it, but it is there........useless, but there none the less.
Randy 07-30-2003, 05:05 PM The buzzer is quiet. It can be heard if you are at 8500 rpm at part throttle. I am curious about the fuel cut-off. Is it a hard cut-off where the rpm's have to drop below 9500 rpm before fuel kicks back in, or is it more gradual? Does the fuel cut-off sound like a misfire, or is it just a slight vibration?
antman_x 07-30-2003, 06:53 PM I went past 8500 rpm this morning in 2nd. didn't realize its so easy and I forgot to shift (been 4 yrs since I drove a MT). got scared cuz only got 90+ miles on her. I heard no beeb what so ever. not going to do that again 'till I'm past the 600 mi mark but would this break anything?
Prowla 07-30-2003, 09:53 PM Damn, so I would really have to pay more attention if I were to drive stick with this car. I'm hearing impaired (60% hearing both ears) and the buzzer in my ol' '91 FC Vert was pretty loud.
TJRX8 07-30-2003, 10:21 PM Yup, Heard it tonight barely over the engine roar. Wish it was a little louder like the radio control "beep".
How about those with Automatics? My son said he test drove one and the chime was annoying as heck. I figure since it goes off at a lower RPM it's probably more audible.
Magnesium 07-30-2003, 10:52 PM I didn't hear the beep, honk, or rattle when I was racing a Corvette down the Interstate earlier. If there is a beep, you most likely won't hear it if you are not concentrating on listening for it.
Inadvertently I hit the fuel cutoff. It didn't take long for me to backoff at that point.
133 mph and smooth as glass. Kinda scary though with cars in the other lanes. Also kinda foolish too. But hey, had to get on it atleast once.
j1mb0x99 07-31-2003, 08:20 AM Since this is my first rotary, I have a question about the high RPMs. With regular engines, going past redline is, understandably, bad. With the rotary however, is it bad for the engine to go up to the fuel cutoff? The fuel cutoff is there to keep you from going into the "dangerous" area of RPMs right? So even if you miss the chime and go to the fuel cutoff mark you aren't hurting anything?

I finally got my car over the 600 mile break in period, and figured I'd see what this redline beep is.
at 8500, it starts a buzzer (sort of - its a constant noise, but not explicitly a buzz). I was in 2nd gear, the radio (stock) volume was set at 9, the ALC (automatic volume increase at speed) was set at 2, the A/C was on 2. There is no way you could miss the buzzer. unless you know what its telling you, you might think it was an out of gas buzzer or your radar detector or something, but it is very definitely noticeable.
Spin9k 08-01-2003, 09:57 AM I know there are some other threads about how (un)loud the buzzer is. Anyone FOUND the damn thing under the dash somewhere? I haven't been able to crawl under there at that 8500rpm moment. Anyone got a shop manual yet? Let's fix it!
I LIKE to hear the buzzer go off, I want a nice tone, it's a GOOD THING!
Should be simple to replace the (non)buzzer with one of higher db level from Radio Shack or some electronics outlet, like at:
http://www.radioshack.com/searchplus.asp
...enter 'buzzer' I get ten units ranging from 70db to 108 db, should suit anyone short of stone deaf.
I want to know when I hit 8500 or 9300 without looking down. The engine is so quiet, engine sound clues don't help much.
Heck I don't look at my V1 to know there's radar out there...
zojas 09-16-2003, 07:49 PM I test drove one sunday
windows up, moonroof closed, radio off, you couldn't miss the tone. not a buzz, definitely a tone. sounded nice. kicked on right when the tach touched the hash marks at 8500, stayed on until I shifted.
mmjames 09-16-2003, 08:23 PM I redlined mine to hear the beep. I was at 8500 at the start of the red section. I looked down and saw the speed at 62 mph.
I backed off cause I thought something has to be wrong. If it is 62 at 8500 in SECOND gear what the hell are all the other gears for. I mean most speed limits nationally are 70 and I think if I went to 9300 I might have got that.
What are the speeds for you all in Second on a red line. Is this thing really right. IF so Damn its good...:p
laferle 09-16-2003, 09:22 PM Just in case anyone's curious, the automatic also has the warning chime which kicks in above redline when the car is in the quasi-manual mode.

Hey mmjames, I see you have seen the rotary light :)
Here's how I think of shifting in a 6MT:
You can either drive it 1-2-3-4-5-6, stoplight, 1-2-3-4, stoplight etc
OR you can try to stay in gear ranges except for starting:
1nd and 2nd (3rd) = when you really want to haul ass
3rd and 4th = when you need 'spririted' response at midspeed
5th and 6th = go to the grocery store laid back driving 20 mph up
The 2nd method is more fun but takes more concentration. The engine's RPM range affords very flexibile power in most gears. The 1st offers an easy drivable everyday car. Take your pick! :D

I think you are on to something upon recollection, I am usually in Second in town and 4th and sometimes 5th Freeways.

I think mine goes higher than that, speed wise, in second gear. Also, 60 MPH in second isn't that uncommon, is it? My fathers 2001 Nissan Maxima went to 60 MPH in second gear, and that is a "normal" 6000 redline or so.
alkupik 01-27-2004, 06:36 PM How would you disable this chime? Is there a fuse that can be removed?
thanks,
Allan

i test drove a cobra many years ago and was going 75 in second and no where near redlining.

i'm not sure but i redlined mine the other day and i heard the beep loud and clear. the radio was on and the engine was loud. i dont know why anybody would want to turn it off. it's music to my ears.

I have heard it twice. Maybe I have better hearing than other forum members, but it was clearly audible, and I mean clearly audible. I couldn't imagine not hearing it, unless i were to have the stereo very loud.

Isn't the chime annoying? so it comes on everytime you push the 8 to its limits?
Genom 01-27-2004, 07:11 PM It's more of a reminder to shift, since the car just doesnt care when you redline. Seriously. I often find myself woolgathering in the morning traffic and am usually doing 7000RPM in first before I notice that I need to shift. You can hold it at 8500RPM in second and have a normal conversation in the car if you accelerate slowly.
I like my chime. I hear it very often!
