used to happen on a stock car with the K flash, no midpipe
with a highflow or catless midpipe and an aftermarket exhaust you could do this
BUT
why the heck would you want to do this? you'll most likely melt the bumper and then feel like an idiot

why would you want to show that off? that reving up like that without a load is so bad for the car.

I believe you are living in the piston world, where you are correct this is bad for an engine, but since the rotary doesn't have any valves you can't hurt it by just revving the engine, only burn gas.

ahh yes the flames, its from all the unburnt synthetic oil..........jk
when you have a rich motor, and a straight path for that unburnt gas, flames will fly.

So, revving like that all the time really wont hurt the rotary?

So, revving like that all the time really wont hurt the rotary?
it will produce a lot of heat, part of the reason for the huge HEAT RECALL was because of the damage the heat can/would do when reving the motor and not moving (no airflow).
It might also foul up your plugs, as there is no load on the motor.
But the simple awsner is no, reving you motor a bit, say at a stoplight or whatever, wont do much of anything but burn gas.
