Does your car make a clunk when you go from reverse to 1st. Mine has definite clunk, as if there is some sloppiness in the drive train, Its probably nothing but I just wonder.

A lot of cars make a very pronounced engagement sound when going in and out of reverse. I didn't really notice it on my test drive but it was probably there.

Mine clunks from the right front wheel area just after pulling off in 1st. No idea what it could be.

I was gonna post this same topic. I have the same clunk. It's very distinct and it seems to happen only in first gear, especially when downshifting. I tried to replicate it, but I can't find the pattern. I know it's not from reverse to first though. Anyone?

P.S. Can the server for this forum be any slower?

I noticed it too, but only after I intially start the car and put it in first. I wonder if it's the DSC kicking in when you start off, not actually working, just initializing? Just a guess...

yes, when I back out of the driveway and begin to roll forward in 1st - Clunk. The first time it did this was very loud. A family member heard it in the garage and asked later what that was. Since then it is like an AC compressor kicking in.

It says in the manual, that this is normal, and it is the car doing some kind of self test. Read your manual for specifics.

The clunk you hear when you first start moving in first or reverse is an ABS self test. Nothing to be concerned about. Many cars do this.

Actually all cars do this. Is absolutely mandatory for cars with DSC (ESP).

Most cars do it when your up to speed, usually 35MPH, to mask the noise.

The proper thing to do is do the test as soon as possible.

If the car had an active booster, like the Lincoln LS, the brake pedal will actually fall away and vibrate.

The clunk I'm hearing is not the initial ABS test, unless it is gonna test itself several times throughout stop-and-go traffic. I think an earlier post is correct about the clutch needing adjustment. I hope this is covered under warranty. No worries though.
