Guys, I am budgeting for a lightweight flywheel and a new clutch. Any ideas as to how many man hours it would take for a pro to install both?
Thanks in advance.

View Full Version : How long to install a flywheel and clutch pack sunilseru 11-09-2005, 06:47 PM Guys, I am budgeting for a lightweight flywheel and a new clutch. Any ideas as to how many man hours it would take for a pro to install both? Thanks in advance. Im_DANomite 11-09-2005, 07:14 PM it takes me about 2.5 hours to swap trannies in an X5 4.4L and close to 2 hrs. to do a clutch on an E36 M3. so i'm gonna say around 1.5 hours for our RX8. staticlag 11-09-2005, 07:45 PM I got quoted $250, but I think I'm going to attempt myself. two rotors 11-09-2005, 09:11 PM I would like to be there using my stopwatch. No chance! carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 09:49 PM A pro on a lift with a mazda manual and powertools: 3 hours Me on jackstands with handtools:10 hours first time (over several days); 5 hours second time (minus removing the flywheel) Im_DANomite 11-09-2005, 09:58 PM a pro shouldn't require a manual to remove a transmission. 3 hours sounds pretty long just for a RWD transmission. transaxles are a totally different story, you might as well just pull the entire motor out. $250 doesn't really sound too bad for a clutch/flywheel job. my dealership charges way way more than that @ a shop labor rate of $100/hr. 5 hours with no power tools and on jack stands is pretty freakin' impressive. carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 10:03 PM I was kinda thinking of a non-mazda grease-monkey like my brother-in-law that would need a manual, possibly (for torque numbers and bolt locations and such. And the 5 hours was not changing the fly, just the disk and pressure plate. The Flywheel adds and hour just for jacking the car up higher on concrete blocks and jackstands (so that I could get leverage on the breaker bar with the 54 mm nut) army_rx8 11-09-2005, 10:06 PM would only need the manuel for tq numbers. everything else is self-explanitory....if he has exsperience carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 10:06 PM wold only need the manuel for tq numbers. everythign else is self-explanitory....if he has exsperienceThen I stand corrected army_rx8 11-09-2005, 10:07 PM also 3 hours isn't a bad time...if you are rushing you can do it in 1.5 but i liek to take my time when i do work.....so abotu 3 i'd say for the average grease monkey Im_DANomite 11-09-2005, 10:13 PM oh...you didn't mention torque-ing everything. i only torque down the important stuff like the pressure plate and flywheel. everything else is around two ba-dats. army_rx8 11-09-2005, 10:16 PM ^hahahha carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 10:18 PM oh...you didn't mention torque-ing everything. i only torque down the important stuff like the pressure plate and flywheel. everything else is around two ba-dats. :spank: shame. Do you check your shaft-dif bolts after a week or so? PPF bolts are like 119,; they deserve some accurate cranking. Im_DANomite 11-09-2005, 10:28 PM no...honestly tho, how many technicians out there torque every single bolt to the specified rating?? it's good practice to torque everything, but c'mon, i need food in my mouth and bills to pay. it would be different if i got paid salary instead of flat rate. carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 10:36 PM no...honestly tho, how many technicians out there torque every single bolt to the specified rating?? it's good practice to torque everything, but c'mon, i need food in my mouth and bills to pay. it would be different if i got paid salary instead of flat rate. You a tech? Then blast away with that power tool and forget it. Flat rate sux. Im_DANomite 11-09-2005, 10:45 PM yeah, i'm a tech. flat rate can be good when it's good. but since the holiday season is coming up and the weather is getting colder, business will be getting much slower. i enjoy using my ingersol rand titanium 3/8" and 1/2" impact guns to their full extent. well, maybe not their full extent, the 1/2" gun has a rating of a 1000 ft/lbs. that annoying crank pulley bolt giving you a hard time? my gun will take care of that... :D: speaking of torque-ing. i need a new torque wrench....but they're so expensive. carbonRX8 11-09-2005, 11:20 PM Husky's are cheap. They are basically stanleys. Pick them up at Home depot. 60 bucks for a 1/2 inch maybe. Do you work in Laurel? staticlag 11-10-2005, 01:33 AM Husky's are cheap. They are basically stanleys. Pick them up at Home depot. 60 bucks for a 1/2 inch maybe. Do you work in Laurel? Huskys are pretty good, I have a bunch of their sockets and they have always worked well for me. Im_DANomite 11-10-2005, 11:04 AM i work in annapolis. only tools i buy are matco and snap-on. carbonRX8 11-10-2005, 11:12 AM only tools i buy are matco and snap-on.Ahhh. Tool Snob. :) |
