Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I read the threads on low/first gear stumble, but the problems they were describing didn't really sounds the same.

Car runs well (for the most part) and has been wonderful to drive. However, I've noticed a problem that hasn't seem to go away.

I always warm the car up before driving, but the problem isn't just while the engine is warming up.

So what happens is from idle, when I accelerate it stumbles. I've driven a lot of manuals with no problem, so I don't think it's me. I start to accelerate, the RPM's go up, keep pressing on the gas and then the engine hiccups a bit, RPM's drop, then *wham* they go up like every other gear does and away I go.

I'm running 92 octane (highest we have around here), and am trying to figure out what could be causing this problem.

Any ideas?

 

It would help to know if this happens consistently at the same RPM and at what RPM. A number of things are happening in this car as it accelerates and the "problem" RPM can help isolate the problem to one of those things.

 

It happens consistently at about 1,200 to 1,500 RPM. It will hit that mark, drop to about 700RPM, then blow past the problem. It seems to be happening all of the time to varying degrees, with it being the worth when the engine is still cold.

 

Try resettign the ecu

 

I'm not aware of a specific, programmed operation that happens at that RPM range, but I'm not an expert. Tell us a little more about your car.

Automatic or manual transmission (I assume manual)?
Build date (sticker on drivers door jamb)?
Did you purchase it new?
How many miles on it when you purchased it?
How many miles on it now?
Has the engine ever flooded?
Has the engine ever been overfilled with oil?
Have you ever replaced the air filter?
Any modifications to the intake or ignition systems?

Answer what you can and maybe something will trigger some ideas from the forum intelligentsia.

 

try feathering the clutch a little bit longer

i get the same 'lurch' if i'm not gentle with the clutch at takeoff

 

What ZoomZoomH said. I have the same problem if I do not feather the clutch.

 

That could be it. I normally get on and off the clutch pretty quick, so it could be I'm just hopping off too quick. :D

Will feathering the clutch harm it? Every other car I had the engine was so weak that wasn't really a problem.

 

just don't ride the clutch for long periods of time and you'll be fine, use your common sense, lol
