there has been an earlier discussion around here somewhere on teh convertibilty of the rx8. However i don't think there will be a convertible version anytime soon... Maybe in another generation, much like the FC.

While I'm not a convertible fan, a RX-8 convertible is not a distant possibility. Most of the chassis strength comes from the lower part of the car. Thus, the top should be able to be lobbed off easily. Whether there's a market for a convertible, when Mazda already has a Miata, is up in the air. I personally like the diversity.

If Mazda does the RX-8 properly, it can be the start of a whole new performance series. If the RX-8 sells well (and I bet it will) we can expect a lot of derivates: A turbocharged RX-8 with about 350 hp; a 2+2 two-doors coupe (RX-7) with the same turbo; A cabriolet with 4 seats and a roadster (the new miata) with 4 cylinders or rotary. I think that would be wonderful. :D Other car manufacturers offer roadsters and 4-seat cabriolets. They appeal to different people.
