View Full Version : Any 1st alloc. pre-orders still waiting??
frogzapper 07-22-2003, 10:56 AM Hello -- I just wondered if there are any other first allocation pre-orders like me out there who are still waiting, waiting, waiting for their car to arrive!! :( I ordered my car back in the beginning of January, and I was sure mine would be one of the first to arrive at my dealership, but nooooo. My dealer can't seem to tell me anything -- all he can say to me when I've called the past 2 weeks is, it should be here any day now! Meanwhile, my car has been sitting at Port Hueneme for over 5 weeks now, and it's driving me crazy! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!
So as I sit here feeling sorry for myself, I thought it might make me feel less worried if I knew I wasn't the only one in this boat (misery loves company, ya know ;) ). So who else is still waiting out there?
ELX13 07-22-2003, 10:59 AM still waiting...
getting increasingly pissed with every passing day.
jdj1971 07-22-2003, 11:03 AM I'm still waiting!! MNAO customer service this morning says mine is scheduled to arrive at the dealer TODAY. It left port on thursday so MAYBE today. BTW I had the appearance pkg and rear spoiler.
javahut 07-22-2003, 11:15 AM Yep, count me in. Ordered 1/13. Was on the 1st ship, one of the 1st 2 pre-orders that made it into the country bound for Austin. Then it just stopped at the Midlothian port near Dallas. Been there going on 4 weeks now. It's just ridiculous.
Bugged me even more when I went to another dealership yesterday looking for an allocation, and watched someone purchase and drive out in one while I was there. And another one had been purchased 7/15 and was due to be picked up today.
Gonna start looking for an allocation if it doesn't show up in the next couple of days.
Look at some of my other posts for my opinions on the way Mazda has handled this. Suffice it to say I'm not real happy with it.
ffjaydee 07-22-2003, 11:19 AM Hey!! Repling from Canada!! I think I can safely say that we have only received a couple of car for the entire country so far. No one pre-ordered or noyt have got their cars. I ordered in Feb/03 and foung out this morning from my dealer that it is finally "on rail".
JayDee
frogzapper 07-22-2003, 12:13 PM I noticed at least 3 of us ordered black GTs -- probably doesn't mean anything, but an interesting coincidence. I didn't order the Nav system or the appearance pkg though, so mine should've been good to go a long time ago! I called the MNAO # this morning and they said my ETA was 7/15. They said they'd look into it some more and call me back this afternoon. We'll see.... hopefully I'll hear from my dealer before then.

Yellow 1SP (6-Speed Sport Package), Appearance Package, Spare Tire.
Ordered 1/8/2003, 2nd boat (Port Hueneme), Midlothian for weeks, no word on it EVER being shipped.
Ordered from Austin (Mazda South, thank goodness), live in Houston.
Given up hope, I guess they'll call when it's in...........
khoney 07-22-2003, 12:32 PM Ordered Jan 10th, 2nd boat, no port options, still at Port Midlothian, getting angrier every day (because people can drive out with an allocation). MNAO says delivery scheduled for July 22nd, but IMMEDIATELY added "but that doesn't mean it will arrive then, so don't be disappointed if it doesn't show up".
How's that for customer care?
Yup, supposed first allocation, not here, dealership has received some already. I'm pretty annoyed at Mazda at the moment - these were allocated back in January, I know logistics is complicated, but this is really bush league for a major auto company.
The only thing I'm glad for is that I didn't pay over MSRP for a first allocation like most dealerships were wanting back in Jan. If I paid over MSRP for a first allocation and others got them before me (even within a week or so), I'd really be pissed off. (Not that I'd pay over MSRP for a mass market car regardless, but a bunch of people obviously did).
Master Phu 07-22-2003, 02:10 PM Still waiting....
MNAO said my ETA was July 21st, still don't have it.
LesPaul 07-22-2003, 02:14 PM Me too. Ordered January 10. Brilliant Black Touring 6 Speed. My dealer says I'm still "on-water".
Wouldn't it be cool if they had Global Positioning devices on the cars so we can track them across the Pacific, through the canal and up the east coast? In the absense of that, a call or e-mail once every three or so months would be nice.

I GOT the Nav system. I should be able to do this. Prolly wouldn't do any good since it would just show a dot in Port Hueneme for a month.
rx8racer 07-22-2003, 05:06 PM You all could just do what I did...cancel your preorder and just buy one off the lot. It seems that Mazda is more anxious to ship the unsold cars than the pre-orders. If I would have had to wait one more day, I would have cancelled it completely.

Did you end up paying more than MSRP because of that?
FYI, mine was on the second boat as well and has been in port since June 27.
eccles 07-22-2003, 05:30 PM I'm another victim of the Port Midlothian morons. Like Javahut, mine was ordered first week in January, arrived on the first boat, caught the first train to Midlothian, and has been languishing there ever since.
Budaman now tells me that all the systems he can access show that it was actually released to the trucking company last week and is on its way here. I called Mazda's 800 number last Friday, and was told that their system confirmed that, with an ETA of Monday (yesterday). Well, it ain't here yet. And why the hell does it take five days to drive four hours down the road anyway? Are they towing these things with a '59 beetle?
jonalan 07-22-2003, 05:48 PM 1st allocation, 1st boat - still waiting.....and waiting.....and waiting...
mikeb 07-22-2003, 06:29 PM what is MNAO #. I have my vin so how can I find were my 8 is.
rx8racer 07-22-2003, 06:45 PM I ended up paying the same price ($500 off MSRP). Luckily the same dealership received cars for sale where mine was ordered. I just swapped the one I had on order for an identical one on the lot except in red. It was either that or I was going to cancel it.
I called Mazda while I was waiting last week and the car was "released to dealer" on Friday the 11th. Mazda told me it had an expected delivery date of the 14th. They could not explain why it had not arrived last Thursday. It still hasn't arrived as far as I know. I offered to go up to Michigan to pick it up but supposedly it had left the port on the 11th. It's only a 3 hour drive so I think I could have pushed the car here by now.
Mazda really screwed this one up. I hope if they ever try a preorder program again they do not get a single order.

(Don't take it personally - I'm just getting snippity from all this waiting.)
eccles 07-22-2003, 06:51 PM By the way, once Mazda "releases" the car to the dealer, the dealer starts paying for the car. You can bet that your dealer is as anxious to see the car as you are, once it's been "released."
Count me in the camp of the misinformed!! On 7/11 received the released from port e-mail. On 7/13 dealer still showing July week 4 for delivery. On 7/18 contacted MNAO, was advised my car is in port showing July week 5 for delivery! On 7/21 MNAO tells me my my car was released from port on 7/19, still showing July week 5 for delivery. On 7/22 MNAO tells me ETA today--Great!! Contact dealer on 7/22, they received 5 8s and none of them are mine. Received the "should be any day now" statement from dealer. The Mazda experience thus far has absolutely sucked:mad:
jdj1971 07-22-2003, 07:13 PM Well after waiting patiently (well not so patiently) my car did NOT show up today as promised by MNAO and my dealer. My dealer has a car in stock exactly like I ordered minus the appearance pkg and rear spoiler/wing. I'm seriously debating on going down there and just buying that one and ordering the app pkg and spoiler to add later.
RXg8tor 07-22-2003, 07:14 PM Yea, I'm still waiting too, however not patiently.
Ordered 1/10/03

91vert 07-22-2003, 08:12 PM Same story here......ordered in first allocation on Jan 12th, been in the US (somewhere) since it came off the 1st boat in Tacoma 6/20.
Still have not even gotten the e-mail that it has been released from port.
WTF is going on?

Same here! Budaman looked up my status around 7/14 and it was "released to dealer". My dealer actually called me 07/16 and said it would be here the next day. Still no car!!!!!!!! Standard response, "Any day now!" AAAHHHHH!
eccles 07-23-2003, 10:00 AM Well, Javahut is about to go from "unhappy camper" to "happy chappie" - I heard that his car just arrived at Mazda South. Hopefully mine is on the truck behind that one.

As of 7/14 my dealer said "it is on the truck and will be here this week". I called on 7/21 - "it has been delayed but will be here end of the month first week of August".
I called Mazda on 7/21, they said "it will arrive 3rd week of July and is on time". I pointed out that it was already the 4th week of July and he said "it will be on time". ?????
I called Mazda on 7/22, they said "it shows an ETA of 3rd week of AUGUST."
I am starting to wonder about paranoid things like hail damage repairs, spare tire kits backordered to Japan, recalls. ARRGH!

jdj1971 07-23-2003, 02:10 PM Well I got a new story today. A district manager from mazda actually called me today. My dealer contacted him about where my car was. It was supposed to be here yesterday and was release from port last thursday. It's been sitting there waiting on a transport truck apparently. He was very nice and said he told the port to expedite my car since it's been sitting there so long. He says I'll have it by friday at the latest.

Yeah, along with the thousands of other 8s just sitting there. I'm sure they'll expedite yours.
Sorry, but I believe your dealer is just trying to make you happy by saying what you want to hear.
jdj1971 07-23-2003, 02:29 PM That wasn't from my dealer. That was from the Mazda District Manager.
Magnesium 07-23-2003, 05:22 PM Just talked to MNAO. I was verifying serial number 4128. They said due to be released July wk 5.
If they move that high with serial numbers, I think there will be alot delivering today, tomorrow, and Friday.
Good luck everyone!

Jonalen,
(WARNING: Sarcasism ahead!)
I believe the delivery schedule is to work from the east & west coast towards the middle of the US. Unfortunately you in Missouri, and people like RXhusker in Nebraska will be the very last to get their cars. ;)
Yet another day gone by without receiving the car. Thanks to Boowana I did get 2 phone calls from the dealer assuring me that the car was released and that it should be "any time now" AGAIN. I don't blame the dealership as they obviously have no control over when the cars are loaded at port. However, I do blame Mazda for their inept approach to logistics and poor delivery process for their pre-order Customers.
khoney 07-23-2003, 07:08 PM I called MNAO on July 21st and they said the expected delivery date was July 22nd. That's when I got it! Everyone should probably call them just to get a warmer fuzzy than from the dealer.

RXg8tor 07-23-2003, 08:12 PM Wednesday is gone ant still nothing.
I spoke to some punk-ass kid at MNAO who gave me some lip with attitude.
" All that i am able to tell you is that your automobile is still at the port in Jacksonville, you're just going to have to wait it out"
On the up side, Mazda's regional rep. will be at my dealer tomorrow. Appearently they're going to jump down his throat and get to the bottom of this delay.
We'll see....

I'm not feeling too warm and fuzzy either. I spoke to MNAO yesterday, and they told me that my car was being loaded onto a truck yesterday. Well it's the end of the day today, and still no word from my dealer about my car (the port's only a few hours from my dealer). :( At least the person I spoke to was pleasant.

Well, yeah, I 've officially switched ranks from the really disgruntled with Mazda for the whole inept pre-order program, to the side of this car is worth waiting for... and then some.
I picked mine up yesterday. What a suprise! The color is everything I had hoped for and more. And so is everything else about the car. I love the sound of the purring, whirring rotary... just enough throaty tone to make the engine inspiring to rev. From the driving position, the level of the sound from the engine is just right to me... loud enough to please and tell what's going on, even while the stereo is at a decent level. But also not too intrusive... perfect!. And the handling (super tight and accurate) and sheer driving fun... WOW! Many more things to love about this car!
I know it doesn't help, but I'm feeling really sorry for you pre-order guys still waiting for your cars. Just a few days ago I was in the same boat. I know if I was still waiting, I would be seething by now. And as much as this whole pre-order thing by Mazda has sucked, in my opinion, the car is awesome and well worth waiting for.
And I'd like to say that the entire process of taking possesion of the car, from the time it was received at Mazda South, was extremely pleasant. Mike Moran (budaman), and everyone there were very friendly and courteous. They let me in on the entire PDI process, take a good long drive in the car before purchasing, and made the entire process painless and even enjoyable. Thanks guys! I highly recommend Mazda South.
So, I feel I won't be posting as much, as I no longer feel the need to experience the car vicariously through the forum... my RX-8 is just outside! But here's hoping that all the rest of you pre-order guys get your cars very soon! I know it's easier said than done, but hang in there! You'll be glad you did!
DonG35Miata 07-25-2003, 12:42 AM Javahut, I am glad to hear some good news. I sat in the RX-8 a week ago, was smitten, and was ready to sign as soon as mine came in. Since then I have developed some misgivings based on what I have been reading here lately. My little voice is telling me to either 1) wait a while before getting an RX-8 or 2) go back and get the Mini Cooper S. (Actually, my little voice is telling me I have two nice cars in great shape with low miles, stick with them, don't buy another and save the money. But that is no fun.)
Between all the delays (not just the ones at port- the cars are six weeks late as it is), the weak, constantly-cycling A/C, lousy fuel economy, and the heat build-up in the footwell I can't help but think that something is not quite right with the car and more problems/issues are going to come out over time. Sort of like Mazda was so anxious to get rotary power back on the roads and back into the lineup, they came out with a car that has some design flaws and quirks that should not be there. It's only been two weeks and we have uncovered two I consider to be significant- the heat in the footwells and the A/C. The fuel economy is what it is, take it or leave it.
Sure, no car is perfect. But neither my G35 or my Miata, both quality Japanese vehicles, have heat you can feel through the firewall to the interior. All that heat in the RX-8 can't be good for the interior or the engine compartment (though admittedly I have yet to drive an RX-8 to feel it for myself.) I can see interior bits fading or changing color over time if it gets hot enough to feel.
As for the A/C situation... I have read numerous apolgetics going on for the way it works. I am not willing to give Mazda a pass on this one. Sorry, guys, make all the comments about A/C compressors and engine speed you want, I don't think the way it operates is acceptable. When the A/C is on full blast it should blow cold all the time, at idle or while driving . No excuses. If my little 138 hp Miata can do it, the RX-8 should be able to as well. I think it was some trickery by Mazda's engineers to get the MPG up by one or two so it would have a respectable EPA number.
Speaking of fuel economy, it gets tiresome feeding a thirsty car. I know, because I have one. It costs a lot of money to feed a G35. Almost $30 to fill the tank every 235-270 miles. In contrast, my Miata goes just as far for around $13-14 a tank. Yeah, I have the money to pay for the gas, but when I sign the CC slip I see money flying out the window. I hate pulling up to the gas pump in my G35. It doesn't bother me in the Miata. The RX-8 seems to get around the same MPG as my G35, but in a smaller car with a manual transmission- and test numbers be what they may, I think the real-world performance of a G35 sedan and an RX-8 are quite comparable- evidenced by the RX-8's
5-60 times.
Sure, the rotary made the package possible, and I do love the package. But it could be that times are moving beyond Dr. Wankel's creation. Could the RX-8 be its last hurrah? If the RX-8 is not successful, or if it turns out to be a naturally aspirated reincarnation of the troublesome last-gen RX-7, I think that will be the end of rotary powered automobiles. I think this is a little extreme to think this could actually happen, and it certainly is nothing I want to see. My happiest days were spent with a rotary Mazda that never let me down once. But given some of Mazda's botched attempts of the past, and a natural but healthy cynicism, I don't think the car is the slam dunk it needs to be. If it got 22 MPG and the A/C worked properly, it would be. If it could do a sub-6 sec 0-60 without a 7500 RPM clutch drop, it would be. But right now, as i see it, it is a bit underwhelming, and both the car's blessing and its curse is the rotary engine.
This post is not meant to inflame new owners or invite controversy; those who know me from my prior posts know me to be good-natured, fair, a rotary fan and a good contributor to the board. It's just that at two weeks, some of things concern me and make me wonder about life with the car over 4-5 years. I guess I would be a lot more excited about test driving my RX-8 when it came in if it wouldn't duplicate my G35's appetite, if I knew the A/C worked as it should, and noticeable heat wasn't finding its way into the passenger compartment.
I hope it blows me away when I drive it, but at this point I don't think it is a safe $30,000 bet, at least not for me.
javahut 07-25-2003, 08:30 AM Originally posted by DonG35Miata
...the weak, constantly-cycling A/C, lousy fuel economy, and the heat build-up in the footwell...
I've only had the car a few days, but I've not experienced any of the problems you mention.
The AC works great. It is in no way weak. I haven't had any sensation of any hot air blowing from the AC at any time. And I'm here in Texas, middle of the summer. It's been close to 100 degrees every day so far since I've had the 8. No problems with the AC whatsoever.
Also, zero problems with heat buildup from the engine. I don't feel any excess heat around the shifter or my leg or feet area. Cool as a cucumber. Of course, I'm still taking it relatively easy for the first few hundred miles, so I don't have it pegged at redline 100% of the time.
Another thing... I love the digital speedo. Never had one before, but I much prefer looking down and seeing the exact speed on the display as opposed to the analog gauge. I think Mazda got this right!
Not sure about the gas mileage yet. I think alot depends on how you drive it. If you wanna have fun with the car and rev it like it's capable of, then the gas mileage will probably suffer a little. I'm sure if you wanna get on the highway and put it in 6th and cruise, the gas mileage would be plenty adequate. But who wants to do that? For myself, I've hardly used 6th gear except to test it out, and provide some variation in the revs while I'm breaking it in. I'm willing to sacrifice a little gas mileage to have some fun with the car and drive it like it's meant to be driven!
... sorry for taking this thread so far off topic...

I am still waiting from the first allocation - same dealer as eccles.
RXhusker 07-25-2003, 10:16 PM Ordered DAY ONE -- first pre-order in my STATE. Still waiting while all dealers have received initial shipments of cars.
My dates have been changed from July Wk 2 to July Wk 3 to July Wk 4 to July Wk 5 to Aug Wk 4
Spent the better part of the day chewing a$$ at Mazda, dealer, port in KC, port in Tacoma, etc. Then had to go play golf to relax a little. Here's what I have found out -- don't let the idiots at Mazda customer service fool you -- answers can be found if you push hard enough. 51 first allocation cars were shipped to KC via rail from Tacoma. 36 of those have arrived. My car is NOT one of the 51 even though my VIN is 000852. My car is still sitting at the port in Tacoma for no apparent reason while second allocation cars are being processed. Apparently my appearance and accent packages have been installed but the car has still not been shipped. Dealer was told 7 to more 10 days for delivery but another check says end of August. Told dealer end of Aug. was completely unacceptable. May know more on Monday.
I was about ready to just forget it and go buy something else (M3, S60R) -- then I took a test drive and got revitalized -- AWESOME !!!

If my car comes in after week 2 in August, forget it- someone else will be driving it home. Summer is almost over, for Pete's sake! Why make payments from November-March while the car sits? I'll get an RX-8 next spring and get it for under MSRP- provided I don't get a Mini Cooper before then. The RX-8 test drive will determine my course.
Mazda has done a lousy job on this pre-order program.

I would've answered your post sooner, but I was out picking up my car! woohoo! I'm finally off the waiting list! :D I haven't had time to drive it around too much yet, but it feels good so far! I can't wait to get past the 600 mile mark!

I am still waiting from the first allocation - same dealer as eccles. If you get sick of waiting, they have a Yellow Sport package on the lot right now, but with no options.

Don, don't give up on it yet. I just picked up my Ti Grey yesterday and I was getting
as disheartened as you (2nd alloc). All that is in the past now.
As hard as it is to do, don't give a verdict before driving the car you ordered.
My first impressions of the car are that its fit and finish is below the G35 (or even my 12
year old G20). There are more noises from the road and the engine.
The A/C is not a problem, however. It cools well without robbing power from
the wheels and the cycling isn't noticeable.
Where the car shines is handling. The steering response is very good -- on curvy roads
it carves the lines you give it (reminds me of my motorcycle) without any perceptible lean.
Sure it bucks every now and then, but it reminds me more of a Porsche in that aspect.
The shifter is smooth and positive, though some people say the Miata's is better.
The car isn't perfect and I'm sure Mazda will be improving the fittings in future
but the stuff that matters is done right and the car is the right compromise for me.
I have driven a G20 for 12 years and have driven the G35 automatic a few days
as a loaner car. This car is _much_ more fun than the G35 sedan and, in my
opinion, worth the "crudeness".
(I hope I am not offending any diehard RX-8 fans with that description but this car
isn't in the same league as an Audi in interior furnishings. The point is that it
doesn't matter).
RXg8tor 07-26-2003, 10:01 AM I'm still here....still waiting too.
My dealer finally decided to do something and called a meeting with Mazda's regional rep. After some A$$ chewing insued, mine finally was released from port JAX....been sitting there since 25 June. The G.M. told me "It'll be here on Wednesday", meanwhile, they were unloading 3-4 that were ordered AFTER mine!!!!
?????i don't get it???
jdj1971 07-26-2003, 12:19 PM well and many broken promises I'm still waiting. But to help smooth things over my dealer gave me a loaner miata for the weekend. I have to same I'm quite impressed. I've never driven one before. I'll have to put it on my list for future fun/weekend toys. :)

Frog,
Thanks for the link. Don't apologize for having higher priorities than posting on this board. Congrats. I hope youare enjoying your new ride.
My car arrived at the dealership, late Saturday. My wife is picking up the car today/Monday. Here is a pic when it arrived at the dealership, before PDI.
B-Nez 07-28-2003, 07:21 PM Yeah, I'm still waiting, too. Ordered 8 Jan, 1st allocation, built 28 May, arrived JAX 18 July...maybe Wednesday...

ELX13 07-29-2003, 12:42 PM this is INSANE! (mind u, i ordered on 2/8/03...1st alloc.)
so i got squirrelly and called MNOA this morning...
build date: 5/28/03...ok
at port date: 6/22/03...ok
ETA: 4TH WEEK OF AUGUST!...WTF?!!!!!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
the ENTIRE POINT of getting into the 1st alloc. was so that i'd have (at least) the last 3rd of the summer to enjoy the car.
i'm at the point now that i'll either...
a) buy a dealer alloc. car or
b) wait until after the winter when i move to san diego in april '04
THIS COMPLETELY SUCKS A$$
zoom44 07-29-2003, 04:37 PM still waiting. released from port yesterday(this doesn't mean it left just that it is ready to leave) and mazda said this morning the eta to the dealership is thursday (the 31st). although he said it could be friday but i've got everything set for thursday so it better be thursday! i'll call the dealership tomorrow to see if they know anything.
edit: btw 2 months sitting in the port just doesn't sound right. are you sure it hit port on 6/22? if so do they have some explanation for this? i wonder if it is because they didn't have enough spoilers appearance packages etc at the inland ports?

Mine sat "at port" for a month (hit port on 6/22 as well), and I didn't have any port installed options. Fortunately for me, I finally got my car last Friday. ELX13 and others in the midwest are STILL waiting.
mazdabob 07-29-2003, 08:53 PM Another delay! Last week I was told by my dealer and Mazda Orders that my car would arrive this week. I called Mazda Orders today (Tues. afternoon) and was told it has been delayed another 2 weeks. Nobody could explain why. It's been at Port Hueneme for several weeks. This is so frustrating!!

The same thing happened to me! I was told 5th week of July last Friday, and by Monday, it had slipped to 2nd week of August!
I escalated through Mazda management and was told there are over 1000 RX-8's
at the port awaiting options. I sent an email to Customer Assistance, and received the
following (interesting) reply:
Dear Tim,
I have spoken with Port Midlothian, and they have advised in order to
maximize wholesale, they have been concentrating on getting out the
least accessorized vehicles first. Your RX-8 is heavily accessorized
and, as such, it's not moving as quickly. They have advised they will
push yours though, but they weren't able to give me an ETA at this
time. I will keep an eye on your vehicle, and I'll let you know when
it has been released to the carrier. I apologize for the delay.
Again, thank you for contacting Mazda. It has been my pleasure to
assist you. If for any reason this response has not completely
satisfied you, please feel free to reply to this message. You may
also contact our Customer Assistance Center toll-free at
1-800-222-5500.
laferle 07-30-2003, 05:10 PM Finally got the call this morning on mine.... woohooo!
ELX13 07-31-2003, 12:58 AM he went and picked his up 2nite (7/30)!
