View Full Version : Cracking knuckles
Aoshi Shinomori 09-16-2005, 11:21 AM Is cracking your knuckles really not good for your knuckles joints and whatever?
Also, is it possible to train your pinky to be independent of your ring finger? I hate how I have to move both to move one. Haha, thanks everybody.
BlueRenesis82 09-16-2005, 11:27 AM all you are doing is dispersing a bubble of nitrogen in the joint, which is why you have to wait a while to do it again.

Same with every joint, no it's not harmful at all?
Luftwaffle 09-16-2005, 11:43 AM It spaces your joints over time, making them bigger I think. It doesn't cause arthritis or anything though.
Photic 09-16-2005, 01:03 PM I was reading that the joint thing is a myth, and it actually helps off-set arthritis.
That being the case, I crack all my knuckles, my toes, my back, my knees, and elbows.
Feras 09-16-2005, 01:10 PM add neck and you got me...i wasnt able to crack my neck before, but after i got rear ended by a tow truck 5 years ago i could.
Photic 09-16-2005, 01:13 PM Yeah forgot my neck, I do that as well.
Tirminyl 09-16-2005, 01:30 PM I constantly crack my knuckles, elbow, wrist, legs, back, neck. I also like the feeling when doing it.
I can move my pink separetly from my (non) ring finger.

I'm all cracked up. I don't do the neck as often as I used to. My wife says it's dangerous and if I end up in a wheelchair she's gonna kick the crap out of me!
Why does it feel so good?

I guess it's not that bad. I don't normally do it, but I was intrigued this morning.
Luftwaffle 09-16-2005, 02:05 PM Pushing the joints past their normal range means that you can force your muscles to relax more. Or something to that effect. It's in the articles I posted.

Separating the functions of those fingers just takes practice. I started the clarinet as a kid and have always been able to move those fingers independently. A good touch-typist should be able to do so also.
So, unless you want to do boring finger exercises, take up an instrument. The Accordion would probably be a really good one :p
CGRX8 09-16-2005, 02:37 PM cracking your knuckles does not cause and problems for your hands at all. for more info on stuff like that check out a book called " Why do men have nipples". It has lots of strange facts like the knuckle thing and why your crap floats sometimes.
RENESIS_NEENJA 09-16-2005, 03:47 PM you can't move your pinky finger independent of your ring finger?? weird...I can ,and i do pop my knuckles all the time...but i though everyone could do that....

Labop 09-18-2005, 09:49 AM I crack my neck and my back all the time. It's no different if I do it or my chiropractor does it for me (though he can get more to pop and they go in the right direction). In fact, he recommends that I pop my back when ever it feels like I need to as it relieves pressure and results in a "minor" realignment. I've also had that verified by physical therapy and orthopedic surgeon.
XDEEDUBBX 09-18-2005, 10:52 AM did somebody say crack?
Aoshi Shinomori 09-18-2005, 12:30 PM Does anyone know if it is possible to go from not being able to move pinky and ring finger indepently to being able to? I hate how they move together. :p
Zuhalter Vati 09-19-2005, 04:51 AM its possible, I can move my "pinky" toe by itself now as well...lmao
