View Full Version : May need a tranny
Spyder_doo 09-09-2005, 11:44 PM A friend of mine just grinded 2nd gear out of my car at the track tonight and it sucks b/c it wont go into first or second sitting still. Once you get moving in 3rd it's possible, not easy but possible, to get it into first and second if you can find it. I'm taking it to the dealer in the morning to see if they'll fix it under warrenty since I was having problems with it before all this happened anyways but if they dont want to do it for free how much would the parts I need cost?
Thanks,
Jamie
adrian-1 09-10-2005, 12:06 AM Ouch, I'd say get your friend to pay for it.
Track = not covered under warranty. Even if it didn't happen at the track the dealership would still not cover it since you've got a turbo.
I'd also like to know what a used transmission goes for, just in case.
BigOLundh 09-10-2005, 08:04 AM EEEKKK I'm tracking tommorow!!!
I hope i'm not reposting this same thread for myself. How did he grind the gears?
TheColonel 09-10-2005, 08:10 AM Wow he must have ground it hard...
Spyder_doo 09-10-2005, 09:57 AM The turbo wont void the warrenty on the transmission.
abbid 09-10-2005, 10:49 AM Yes it will...
cas2themoe 09-10-2005, 10:55 AM There have been several threads stating the need for a new Trans. What does one actually cost?
Spyder_doo 09-10-2005, 12:53 PM They cant prove that the turbo had anything to do with the trans messing up. If anything at all they'd claim user error. I'm trying to find out how much it cost for a new one, but so far no luck.
Broke_Apex_Seal 09-10-2005, 01:28 PM new trans cost about 2500 bucks
Spyder_doo 09-10-2005, 02:47 PM I've seen engine and trans for 2200 before.

Brice-RX8 09-10-2005, 03:53 PM They sure can say that the turbo killed the trans. Their argument will probably be that their is too much power for the trans to handle thus killing the lower gears. I would say you are going to have to pay for a trans buddy.
CERAMICSEAL 09-10-2005, 04:08 PM I've seen a few threads on here mentioning trans purchased from these guys. I think they are in the teens.
Spyder_doo 09-11-2005, 01:54 PM They told me that if it was the clutch that they couldnt replace it under warrenty but as far as I know they are going to replace anything else that's wrong with it. I think it's the syncros but I'm not really sure. If the clutch was bad wouldnt it be hard to go into any gear? What do ya'll think it could be?

Definitely bent/cracked shift fork. There's a service note in the Mazda database but it's not a recall. Rosenthal Mazda posted the info here. (http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=806770&postcount=167)

They sell new ones for $2674, transmission link. (http://www.mazdatrix.com/8-trans.htm)
Spyder_doo 09-11-2005, 06:29 PM Well if they're even a mention of a defect or anything in the database then they usually replace it without too many problems.
adrian-1 09-11-2005, 08:49 PM I'm thinking they're going to say "not covered" as soon as they see the turbo, but it doesn't hurt to try.
Keep us updated.

Spyder_doo 09-13-2005, 10:23 AM Alright everyone my clutch is said to be ready to be replaced. I need to know what clutch and flywheel I should go with. I like the ACT clutch and prolite flywheel, but is that going to be a good clutch for a turbo 8? Just let me know what everyone thinks and where's a place to get them as cheap as possible ;)
