Not food, not water, electronics, a few pairs of nikes. Good show retards, loot your home neighbourhood.

People are opportunists, if nothing else.

For sure. I would love to make looting unnecessary goods an opportunity to get shot between the eyes.

Apparently they're shooting cops too, the ones who aren't also looting.

they declared martial law, if we had any national guard left in the country they'd put some baghdad order into that city, and the looting would stop... but no our national guard is protecting our borders by fighting abroad...sigh. In vietnam the national guard stayed here...

Isn't martial law a state thing? and federal government doesn't allow martial law. federal>state right?

i can understand stealing food to feed your family.

i can understand stealing medicine to treat the sick.

i dont/cant understand what the purpose is to steal jewellery or things that arent necessary like that just because. the people that do that should just be looked in the face and told 'you will not be receiving any aid whatsoever due to your actions' and tattooed on the forehead saying 'i looted my own city during hurricane katrina'

makes it hard to have sympathy for them

i think they should put snipers on the roof tops and since there are no hospitals i guess that means they better shoot to kill

Federal is not necessarily greater than state. The laws themselves are different and are generally on a higher, more serious level. In most cases, federal laws do not supercede state laws so we have to follow both.

According to Wikipedia:

Contrary to many media reports, martial law has not been declared in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, because no such term exists in Louisiana state law[4]. Rather, a state of emergency has been declared, which does give some powers similar to that of martial law.

UPDATE: A Martial Law has been declared by the Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Naggin (8/31/05), in an effort to stop the looting in the city. Source: WWLTV

One reporter talked about seeing looters in homes crawling over dead bodies looking for stuff to steal. A cop told him that he would like to shoot them right between the eyes and leave them there with a big LOOTER sign on their chests.

I agree, food, water, even some absolute essentials in clothing I can understand. It's really kinda scarey at what can happen in these situations. My theory on a lot of crimes, and especially this one, is "no repeat offenders!" and dead people don't steal!!!

this looting is getting out of control. I agree 100% . But we have to remember these people are in an extremely desperate situation. Unfortunatley it appears to have decended into an almost Mad Max scenario.

It's a shame that they pulled 1500 police officers from search and rescue efforts to curb looting, considering these people are stealing something that has a monetary value, not a human life(ie, looters can loot all they want, but if i had the choice to save a persons life then stop someone taking a TV, i'd go for the person) . I dunno, tough situation and it's truely sad.

I think they should release the camera crews out there in force to photograph all of them, then post their photos all over the US everwhere so everyone will know what POS's they are and the will never get a break in life, either that or just shoot them :)

it is sad that they had to take police off of search and rescue, but the looters forced officials into that position because they are shooting at police and rescue workers.

That wouldnt work... these people dont care and they have no shame

Man thats greed to the Nth degree... you're town is a disaster area, survival should be your top priority and they are stealing things that are absolutely useless to them.... Priorities are always screwed up

yet they complain about how hard it is for them... its a mentality like that that is going to continue to keep them down.

Use you head for god sakes

i'd love to hear a story about a looter getting killed/maimed by a croc.
I heard a story about two old peopel that were driving and somehow went off the road into a gator farm. They had to be rescued by helicopter as the rescuers were fightin off the gators

see, that's no good because it doesn't involve looters getting there come-uppins.
