18's snow tires question

First of all please don't flame me because this is posted somwhere, I looked for quiet awhile and could not find the info. Anyways I see alot of people switch to 17's for winter tires....why? And if I would not switch what would be the best tires for 18's.....Once again I apologize for being new to the site...

thanks for the info

I went for 17's for a few reasons:
1) a lot cheaper than 18" wheels/snow tires
2) limited choice for 18" snows, sold out when I was trying to buy in 2003
3) Narower tires are supposed to be better in the snow
4) the handling is not going to be the same anyway because the tread blocks on snow tires make the steering a bit floaty anyway.

What I did not want to do was change the tires on/off the stock rims twice a year, which is expensive and hard on the wheels and tires.

... and if: Bridgestone LM25 are pretty capable winter tires and available for18" rims.

In fact they feel better on a dry winter road than the stock Potenzas do on a dry sommer road. Less tramlining and better grip - so take care on the first miles after you put summer wheels back on.
